I think First Class is more beautiful than that new rig. I'll take the classic, working dual exhaust, no e-log, and a BIG OL KITTY under the hood over any pretty truck every day of the week. And twice on Sundays.

The dummy stacks I agree are about as cheesy and poserish as it gets. And I like Petes but I hear ya I’m not into the slammed fancy paint big fender look either. It’s kind of hits me same way the diesel pickup broskys with stack kits and fender well lights…you know, “those guys”

I got my first Class A license in 1981 in Wisconsin. Took the written test & passed & went on to take my driving test in a 1978 Ford Thunderbird. Unbelievable difference in the times, right? Went on to learn to drive truck at the hands of a couple generously experienced owner operators. Those were the days. Had 39 yrs of OTR & local jobs, including years of owning my own equipment. Not a single accident, no speeding tickets & a lot of great memories. The only state I didn't get to was Maine. Drove automatics twice & wouldn't give you a plug nickle for either one. Give me a 13 or 18 speed any day.
Love your videos. Keep 'em coming. Be safe. 🙏

Got mine in the early mid 70's. Was trading my Maine license for a Louisiana license took the 20 question test for a car and got 100, asked the guy, " what does it take to get a class 1?" He said 10 more questions but since you got 100% you can get them all wrong and still get it. I think it was 10 bucks more. Was driving a Freightliner Transtar cabover with a sleeper hauling trailer loads of soda from Baton Rouge to Slidell La. the next week. Asked them to show me how to shift it and I was on my way. Just got off the road a few years ago, 1998 W9 Detroit, 18 speed, low bed. My own authority. Got my own loads. Been to all the lower states several times except N. Dakota, so 47 also. No accidents, no fines or tickets.

I'd take that W900 any day. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to drive truck with my dad and an older brother in 1975 after I graduated from high school. My career after that was being a underground laborer and then eventually a heavy equipment operator. In the 90's I was finally able to get my class A license and drove part time during the winter months when I wasn't working in construction. My favorite truck was a T600 with the couch and bunk. I'm retired now in South East Arizona, and to tell the truth, I kinda miss driving because of the alone time I enjoyed out on the road.

I have been trucking for over forty years and never went to school.. Got my CDL when I was eighteen and just renewed it every term ever sense... I have never taken a driving test. My employer wrote me off back in those days... But a driver told me not long ago. They took a test at the DMV and they made him double clutch... Evidently after fifty years nobody has told the DMV about synchros... They even told him how to put his foot clear to the floor on the clutch while he was moving... Nobody ever told them about clutch breaks either....

I got my Texas Class A in 1978. Rented a Mack twin stick from Ryder, drove it 70 miles to pick up a Rentco 40' dry van, drove back 70 miles to take my driving test, dropped off my 2nd cousin who had a Illinois commercial license to ride with me to get to the driving test drove 150 miles to pick up a load.drove back 150 miles and unloaded the load. Drove the 70 miles to return the Rentco trailer and returned the Mack by 7 the next morning. After rentals and fuel still made $2200.00. Good old rate days and huge money for a 18 year old kid.

There is always something that messes that plan up. Traffic. Weather. Shipper/receiver. Accidents. Always have some sort of delay somewhere.

That truck stop is always so crowded.
As far as the ELD goes, as soon as the truck starts rolling greater than 5mph, it jumps to the drive line unless you are in yard move mode. You can only run 20 mph or less in yard mode.

The reason for a weed burner is the DEF stains the chrome on the stacks. So it’s a lot easier to keep chrome nice when they never heat up. Even on a true exhaust most of the smoke comes out of one pipe.

Talking about jumping trucks in reverse, I back a lady driver’s truck up into a spot that she was having trouble with. It had an automatic transmission and couldn’t believe how jumpy it was. Had to push throttle more than I’m used to to get the truck to move. When it did it was moving faster than I wanted it to move. I’m retired, but the company that I drove for now buys only automatics. Personally in icy conditions, I would rather have control over shifting than the truck doing it for me. As for the trash at truck stops, that always did bug me. I’ve been in truck stops where it was so bad behind the trailer that you could hardly walk. Absolutely uncalled for. Id always pickup trash and return carts if I parked at a Walmart. I felt that if they were kind enough to let us park there then we should keep it clean.

We have 2 Freightliners with automatics that are like riding a bucking horse when backing up. Backing straight isn't so bad but cutting wheels tight feels almost like the brakes are on. And with a smooth bore tanker it gets the slosh and surge action going big time and that just makes it worse. I'll gladly take the 10 and 13 speed manuals over the autos any day.

No Kurt, you wouldn't have to live in that kind of truck to be able to afford it, you just couldn't take 4 months off plus 2 or 3 week vacations or work short work weeks. You might have to run M~F, before long you won't have any school functions to attend either to take time off for. But I don't really see the point of stretching a frame other than a little better ride but it only makes the truck more difficult to back into docks with tight customer lots specially with a short turning radius of the W900.

Nice Pete but honestly, no way I would trade a pre emission W9 for a new truck. Buying one is the cheap part. I had one of the last pre emission 379's 6NZ Cat, it was a beast, but the drivers seat doesn't line up with the steering wheel and the sleepers leave a lot to be desired. The W9 can't be beat. I think they're better looking especially when they still have the 7 vertical bars on the grill, hint hint. a lot of Love's are pretty small and on the east coast hill country there are some I couldn't get in the entry they were so steep, even coming in at an angle.

@Trucking With Schmidt it's funny how different people go off on a stretched out truck. I'm a trucker and my W900 has a 267 inch wheel base. I ordered my truck this way back in 1999. There are things I wish I would have done differently back then including the wheel base. I later had a 290 inch truck and after I started driving that truck I realized I could get around just as easy as the 267 inch truck. I just recently have leased on to a new company. They wanted me to do a road test in their 300 inch truck. I handled it with ease! I have a brother who has no trucking experience and he wants little short day cab trucks for the family farm. Our farm is out here in Western Kansas where we are blessed with lots of space. He wants short trucks so he can get around easier.😒
