A few lifetimes ago, my husband and I got a job cleaning out the storm sewers in a newly constructed subdivision. The village wanted about a thousand pounds of wet construction clay removed from the storm sewers before they would annex the subdivision. All my husband and I had to work with was a one gallon bucket tied to a rope. Early one morning, when the construction crews were pulling onto the job, my husband and I came crawling up out of the storm drain. We looked like the mud monster from the movie "The World Beyond". After we explained what we were doing in the sewer, someone yelled, "Call Mike Rowe!" 😂
You're a keeper, my dear.
When my now husband and I had just started dating, we were driving to a restaurant, both dressed nice. (He was hot. Lol) It was raining hard. I saw something in a ditch and told him. He slowed down. A cow was stuck in mud in a ditch. We both got out without saying a word. He got his rope out of the truck, I got the shovel out of his toolbox. We worked together and got this cow out. He was pulling her, I was pushing. Right when we heard the sound of the mud releasing her, she pooped all over me as she came up. It was not pleasant. My boyfriend checked out the cow and made sure she wasn't hurt. Checked on me. I told him I would be alright but I need a shower, fast. He called the owner of the cow who came to get her. My boyfriend helped fix the fence as I stood in the rain and got as much ick off of me as possible. My boyfriend had coveralls in his toolbox and gave them to me. I changed in his truck. He got back in the truck and said, "Well, that was a shitty start to our date. We're Mike?" I didn't know what he meant. He took me back to his house and told his mother I needed clothes and he wanted to show me Dirty Jobs. I wore his mother's sweats and we watched Dirty Jobs with his parents while my icky clothes were washed by his mom (I told her I could wash them she told me no. Lol)
My husband tells me that was the night he told his dad that I was the one. 🤣 (I remember that he told his dad to skip an episode. Found out later it was the horse insemination one. Lol)
@@keekersA Mike Rowe 'Dirty Jobs' love story! Congratulations on finding "the One"!!!
@@keekers That's a great first date story, and the fact that ya'll wound up getting married, and are still together makes it all the better !
On another note, fortunately for you, cow manure is mostly composed of what amounts to half digested grass, it's not quite as bad as others animal poo. It's still pretty gross though, it wouldn't be as humorous though had it been from something other than a ruminant animal !
@@keekers Oh my goodness!!!! 🤣 Thank you for that awesome story!!!! It sounds like mine and my husband's (then boyfriend) first date!! It was a prom date, so we were dressed to the nine's too. Except, ours wasn't a cow, it was his car. He pushed with mud flying everywhere while I gave it gas. He had on a rented tuxedo and didn't want it to get ruined, so he took everything off except the bowtie. I wasn't allowed to turn around, but I peeked. 😂 He was hot too!!! When I got home with my prom dress and bare feet covered in mud, he started calling me his muddy-toed girl.
The “that’s the way I heard it” takes me back to the days of my childhood sitting with my grandfather listening to Paul Harvey… and now you know the rest of the story… and I LOVE it!! Thanks for sparking a core memory.
Mike references Harvey quite often!
"And now, the rest of the story"
I remember listening to Paul Harvey. lol
"And now you know, the rest of the story."
This episode reminds me of the best complement I ever received as a performer. We had no set, no costume, no makeup, almost no props. In front of people who knew me for years. They told me "I didn't recognize you."
Modern actors need to learn to become invisible again.
bit quieter too wouldn't hurt either...
Most people don’t agree with me, but in every role I have seen Meryl Streep , all I see is Meryl Streep playing X, same with many actors. What I think I should see is the character, and not notice the actor. And I really think the entire entertainment complex was far more enjoyable when I had no idea the actors had a life outside of film. I don’t want to know their political opinions. Basically be an actor, go to work do your job, go home.
@@lilolmecjI think, among contemporary actors, Daniel Day Lewis comes closest to achieving the art of inhabiting and disappearing into the role.
Having listened to many podcasts by Mike and Chuck on my IPhone , all of which I've thoroughly enjoyed, I came upon this tonight and it was wonderful. As an 85 year old widow, watching this on my computer, it was delightful listening to men's voices telling great stories at my kitchen table. I miss deep voices and especially the laughter. Bless you both!
P.S, I've read all of your Mother's books, Mike, loved them of course, can't wait for the new one coming out. Your contributions to the world are much appreciated.
Many share your sentiments; of that, I’m certain. 😊
Some of the best advice I've ever heard,
"Never forget, Helicopters are ALWAYS trying to kill you."
100,000 individual parts trying their best to destroy themselves.
Everything is always trying to kill you.

I thought I was listening to Paul Harvey for a second there! Nice story!
More than a second. 😊
Mike's voice is way too perfect for Paul, with that midwestern twang.
and now I know... the rest of the story.
Mr. Rowe, don't take this wrong way. I love playing your podcast to fall asleep, but I rewatch it the next day.
It’s his great smooth voice.
Any Mike Rowe ......is a good day. As someone whose abopted San Francisco as his hometown, he repeatedly discusses fixing it & hasn't given up on it.....a true demonstration of love for one's home.
He's from Baltimore.
As a Texan I respect anyone who stays in California instead of running like cowards, ruining our lives in about 4 or 5 states & our states. Stand & fight.
@@oldmantwofour5561...and then he moved. I went the other direction, from CA to the Baltimore area, where we still welcome him warmly as the native son he is. 😊
@@oldmantwofour5561and you're dumb.
I was 16 when Cocktail came out and I remember seeing it in theaters and enjoying it.
I guess I should just remember it fondly and never watch it a second time.
The music will help you through it if you watch again.
I was 20 when it came out and I remember laughing out loud at the scene where Tom Cruise gets a check from Elizabeth Shue's father to just go away.
I thought it was hysterical that we were supposed to feel sorry for this low life who was crawling back to the girl he cheated on.
Mike, here is a review: I have never (Even once) regretted anything I watched, that had you in it. I love this show, and you always give me something to ponder.
Same here. Decades ago, in the last couple of days before Christmas, my wife and I were sitting on the couch at like two in the morning, laughing our butts off as a smart-ass commented on the children's toys he was selling during his graveyard shift on QVC. I particularly recall a Weebles-like miniature playground set with a tiny merry-go-round the host dryly referred to as the "revolving pod of death." Who would've guessed back then that this man who would be fired from QVC multiple times would become a true national treasure.
I will sit and listen to Mike Rowe talk, read and or sing anytime.❤
I just want to say to you Mike.... as a washed up opera singer, you have been killing it for a couple of decades. Keep up the good work. 😉
I love Mike Rowe. The man has always been an entertaining part of my life, and now to learn more about his history, rise to fame, and dedication to his passions it really cements how much I value the attention I afford him with his new endeavors.
Great Job Mike, I’m glad your podcast is taking off.
Dear sirs, I am so grateful for everything you do . I enjoy the honesty, the thought provoking conversations, and most of all, the laughter! I hope you both keep up the great work. Thank you so very much for making me laugh and smile, and also for making me think. Take care, God bless you all. 😊❤
Paul Harvey lives on " and now, the rest of the story"
Mike My husband and I truly Loved “ Some Thing to Stand for “ tears , joy and pride. I couldn’t wait to get out of the theater and call all my family and friends to make sure they didn’t miss your movie. ❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍
🤣🤣🤣
Yay!!!!!
That was wonderful. It’s so good to hear one of these stories again.
Good idea Chuck, I enjoyed the format and conversation between a couple of good buddies.
who doesn't love a good story narrated by a great voice!!!!!! wonderful!
Mr. Rowe, I missed "Something To Stand For" in the theatre. Will you please release it on DVD?
Me too. It didn’t play close to me 😒
Same. It wasn't playing near me 😢
We saw it! Sorry to rub it in. Even my 11 year old liked it!
Saw it twice. It was great. I will buy it. Excellent
We saw it, will buy the DVD so I can have it for generations! Very emotional, makes me prouder of our amazing nation.
Wow… this is the first time I’ve watched a show (I usually listen to the podcast) but, what a great story - and delivery! - thanks, boys; that was wonderful! And, I concur: please release STSF on DVD or streaming, ASAP - it wasn’t playing out here in the woods.
5 stars... Especially for the Sammy impressions. Gold... Pure Gold
One last two-cent's worth: I believe it was George Bernard Shaw who said, "It's easier to criticize than be correct."
give credit where its due...okay mr mike rowe, your snoothe baritone voice made me love deadliest catch for 20yrs! your gen x catered banter, double entendre and overall witty commentary while doing vile ish jobs is why 1.1...your excellant retellin/writing stories of history in the way i heard it is evidence that i actually like history...so my flowers go to you! ❤
I love the format. Wonderful show.
We love your stories! Y'all are amazing examples of how to be good men! 🇺🇲😎👍🏻
Totally remember watching Cocktail, never knew this story. Fascinating, thank you!
Another fabulous podcast. We saw Mike's movie, Something to Stand For, and it brought tears to our eyes more than once. I strongly encourage everyone to go see it.
Couch Jumping was totally weird
We love you Mike Rowe
Mike Rowe I’m currently working on a film project all about my life struggles dealing with health issues from epilepsy to depression and anxiety and recently a couple years ago suffering a near fatal massive stroke. I would absolutely love to have Mike Rowe narrate my future film which is all about me. I’m not a film writer or book writer in any aspect whatsoever but it would be a masterpiece of a film that I finally will be able to share with the world. Cocktail was definitely a strange movie but I definitely remember seeing the film. For some reason I have the soundtrack on cassette tape. lol.
Mike Rowe keep doing your thing!! Love this podcast!!
Thank you boys!
Just subscribed! July 6th!!! I love you, Mike. So, THERE.
You guys ROCK!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
I love and miss your stories. Please provide a couple a month or more.
We need more people like you Mike .
Mike and Chuck, I really enjoyed this format, you two should do more of these kind of episodes.
the opinion of a stranger sometimes means more that people realize.
i work in logistics, since 1993. at my current job (since 2001) i make a point of expressing positive feedback to those who deserve and earn it during the course of my day.
over the years, i have been asked "really, are you serious? i'm doing a great job?. i don't know you".
but that's the point - if someone you do not directly work with (in the same department) compliments you on your focus and execution of your job it's a good, honest thing. i don't NEED to tell you what your job quality is, but yes, i am a stranger. i have no reason to jerk you around.
people get it, if they ask me why and i explain why. my positive feedback may decide if that person comes back to work tomorrow, and i think that is all the more reason to say "good job". we need to hear we are on the right track, that our toil is not in vain.
great show, mike.
Man, I enjoyed this! You guys really feed off each other in the most entertaining way. As far as not watching certain actors because of something in their personal life, I vowed to never watch anything with Jane Fonda once I found out about her disloyalty during Viet Nam; the other person I won't watch is Will Smith because of the Oscar slap. I used to say I would watch anything he was in, but not any more. Most of the time, I don't care about the personal lives of actors, but in these two cases, I just can't let it go.
the best part of cocktail is toms hair in the Top Gun re_shoots🤙😎🤙 I gotta tell ya Mike, much like a nice hot bowl of baked potato soup, not much out there that can break through a melancholic mood as peacefully as the sound of your voice....thanks for that
I love this channel. I could listen to Mike for hours.
So much fun!
Top Gun: Maverick is literally the ONLY Tom Cruise movie I have watched in the last 20 years. And I watched it on streaming so I didn’t spend a dime to see it. Minority Report was the last one. And I’m still looking for someone to give me back the 3 hours I wasted on Magnolia.
Oh no! Magnolia actually changed my life!
Ive never seen Dirty Jobs. I have only seen you on CZcams. I always watch your productions and enjoy them....even when i don't know your guests. I hope you continue. I always feel enriched in some way. Keep up the good work.... I'll keep watching and enjoying.
My wife and I moved to Nashville five years ago.
Initially we were impressed by the glitz and glimmer of the City.
After five years, however, I’ve learned one thing:
Behind the Shine there’s Shit.
Mike, at 57:51, the quote " The dishes are done!", is not from Adventures in Babysitting, but from Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter Is Dead.
Don't "F" with the Babysitter...
Adventures in babysitting...
My first time watching - loved it!
I have Cocktail on dvd. I'm not ashamed to admit, I liked it. 😂🤦♀️
I thought it was pretty cool, never believe the critics.
Don't be ashamed 😊.
Decide for yourself what you like or enjoy.
I absolutely love that movie 👍😁
WOW! I really enjoyed the way you delivered the story! It kept me tuned in hoping to figure out what movie and star you were reading about.
I saw Cocktail in the theater as a college student. I don't remember it being such a horrible movie. Lol!
When Mike said “laugh for no good reason” I thought the actress was Kamala…
I could listen to Mike’s golden voice all day long 😊
Amazing audio. Can you share the equipment details that make you both sound so great? I'm a sound guy, and would love to know..
Great episode, as usual!
You never fail to make me laugh.
There are things far more important than money and accolades for what we do or who we are.
Finding peace of mind has been my most worthwhile accomplishment but even that is fleeting, in most trying times.
I am and have been an asshole to both friends and loved ones but have mellowed somewhat over the last 30 years.
To answer what drives us to desire strangers to like us, I can sum it up simply being that we want universal unconditional love.
The irony is that we are loved unconditionally but, asking for every human being to give us such gift, just isn't possible to fulfill...
...because human beings are involved.
The peace of mind comes with the responsibility to remember that we are so loved.
Awesome show, by the way, thanks for putting yourself out here for target practice.
Always a great story with the awesome Mike Rowe.
Great sound!
If an “artist” is a bad person, it doesn’t matter how well they “perform in their arts”..some people won’t pay to see..these “arts” folks are real proud of themselves
Ha ha! I knew the movie 60 seconds in. This is a great format. Love it!
Love the leg lamp in the background.
Another one in the bag, Great show.
For some odd reason, you have that type of voice and personality that says to me - stay the course and just do it and everything will be OK.
BTW Chuck - I too have a very good friend (brother from another mother) whom I am so happy for his success.
I love Mike! ❤❤
“The dishes are done, man.” is from Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead where the Keith Coogan's character skeet shoots the dirty dishes to pieces from the roof of the house. Keith Coogan was in both Adventures in Babysitting and Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.
Really great discussion.
Chuck saying "you were Travis Mcgee, for sure" ..that was a good one .. ... if I had a dollar for every John Macdonald reference I've heard on a podcast ...Well, I would have a dollar ..............
What a great story !! ❤❤
Hey Mikey and Chuckie! I liked this podcast very, very much. You're both the epitome of reality podcast. Kudos and Cheers, Mate.
Man, I miss the old format! Nice!
Mike Rowe is entertaining and listening to him filled a gap in my day... 5*
We planned to see your movie, but it changed venues an hour away. Looking forward to it on Amazon or wherever it heads next.
I was a projectionist and ran "Cocktail." It wasn't that bad. 1988 actually was a very good year for films, so by comparison "Cocktail" may look a bit thin, but how about the buzzkill flick that Michael Keaton did that year, "Clean and Sober?" There were worse movies than "CT." I can think of movies that even won BEST Picture in other years that are not as entertaining as "Cocktail," like "Ordinary People," or "Kramer vs Kramer."
Cocktails soundtrack was awesome
I enjoyed Cocktail when it came out, but I was a teenager. It is on my list of movies I will never watch again because I suspect that if I see them as an adult, I will hate them and ruin a fond memory.
@@KrisD007 People talk about how much they hate "Kokomo" but it is also a great song.
"If things didn't end badly they wouldn't end at all" I recently said this to a friend going through a divorce. It seemed to help him put things in perspective. A notable line in Cocktail of course. So, I don't know, good on the writers of Cocktail. Also it wasn't a bad movie for sure. I enjoyed it. One more thing, Elizabeth Shue was, is , and will always be a beautiful woman.
@@jodylivengood4061 I'm going to second every thing you've said here.
Loved the podcast
Let's be honest Mike....there are no "spoilers" in this podcast because that would mean that there was something to "spoil". in 88" I was graduating high school and the movie was nothing compared to "Rain Main" or "Die Hard". Those movies I remember very well!!
Cruise at the end of Tropic Thunder!
That was a jaw dropper! Never saw it coming.
One of the highlights of his career. That movie was truly brilliant.
Supposedly at one point they were going to do a spinoff movie about Les Grossman (Tom Cruise's character).
Being able to separate a person's acts and beliefs from their creations is key to enjoying and partaking in society. Unless you don't want society.
It was a non-issue till more recent years. It would really be helpful if actors would keep their in your face opinions to themselves. This is especially important for actors who are always ‘themselves’ even when acting, as opposed to to actors who so become the character that you don’t notice who is playing the part.
That was really interesting Mike. You have a good voice for story telling.
Oh my God I can't believe someone even wrote that about you I am so glad that that show was on that was the best show American ever seen next to deadliest
What brand shirt is that? I need me some more American made shirts! also Mr. Rowe! I just got my first job as a mechanic for John Deere after getting my degree in welding. I'm going back for AG diesel tech and already got the ball moving on my LLC. Thanks for being the best worse influence in my life. God bless and all things for His glory.
Dig your content 100%.... thanks guys
The quality of your audio is the best I have ever heard from a podcast. Keep doing what you're doing.
Love the back n forth between Chuck and Mike
It has Elisabeth Shue in it; so, not bad.
Love me some Mike Rowe
That story … and the read was an absolute masterpiece! 👍👍
My favorite Tom Cruise story is that my uncle gave him a swirley as an underclassman at Cincinnati Bible College
So your uncle is trash, great story.
Could be a huge reason he thinks Christianity is crap and went looking for other answers, and found Scientology.
I've never seen anything from Cocktails other than the bottle-tossing bar scene.
God bless you Mike Rowe, dirty jobs is what always kept me in the trades and I love being a blue collar American. Hope you are well.
I agree with you ever since Tom Cruise became a Scientologist I just didn't think anything good at his movies same with John Travolta.
We love your boss too.
I loved Cocktail! And I had a clue you might be talking about Elizabeth Shue, and trying to figure out the movie lol!
Mike Rowe for vice president! I love this guy so much. Great mind and great looking.
Great show
Director Boris Sagal died in front of me on Mt Hood in 1981 by walking into the tail rotor. He was really good to us, and was a horrible tragic end to a great guy. The production was Workd War III, made for NBC, starred Rick Hudson , David Soul, and others who went on to star in Harrison Ford films. Our job was to ski
I'm sorry😢
The sentiment over the credit in DJ's was compelling - I couldn't help but see the parallel between Mike Rowe and the workers you profiled; you carried a production, it doesn't happen and isn't a "money-making operation" w/out you, an employee that dedicates themself to a company should be recognized and given the financial reward and credit due by the company ownership without having to drag their tired butts into an office to complain. It's the way Hollywood works, but more importantly it's now the way American corporations work. "Do everything, say nothing, get nothing" is the perfect employee.
Mike said "Seven." with such conviction! I thought for sure he was right! 😂
I would argue that Battlefield Earth (starring John Travolta) is the worst movie of all time.
Gotta be close to any Steven Segal or Neil Breen movie
Absolutely agree on Battlefield Earth coming in 1st place as the WORST
Mike Rowe, Another great Way I Heard It. Also, I hope you have plans on releasing "Something To Stand For" on DVD. If so, please let me know I want to keep it forever!
I never saw Cocktail. It didn't look interesting to me, but I didn't know Elizabeth Shue was in it. Now, I'll have to see it because I think she is AWESOME!
That is quite an incredible story. I’m so glad you did this podcast. I’ve seen the movie several times, and still quite enjoy it. There aren’t really redeeming qualities, but it’s a fun film and an escape for a few hours.
I really enjoyed the entire show. Great discussion with Chuck.
I remember back in the day trying to rent this movie on vhs and I could not find it and asked the front counter if they could look it up and see if they had it and he said it was in the “adult” section and I said we’re definetly not talking about the same movie 😂
