The difference between attacks on government buildings like the one in France and Jan. 6 is that the one in France was driven by the will of the people. The Jan. 6 attack was driven by the will of a rich guy who felt entitled to a second term.

Not sure you're talking about the same attack in France.. The february 1934 attack on the parlement was led by far-right groups largely inspired by italian fascism & Mussolini's blackshirts... Similar but less important attacks happened elswhere in Europe during the 1930's, also inspired by italian fascism..
Not sure I agree with the interviewee about the fact that french democracy fell six years later: this was largely due to the nazi invasion... between 1935 & 1940, fascists movements largely fell out of favor with the general population

Very interesting listing to these professors this is why we need to get rid of the electoral college it is out dated and change the rule on the how many Senators a state Gets perfect example is CA versus SD&ND less than 2Million people in these two states but they have 4 senators and CA with over 40Million people has only 2 Senators how is that a real democracy when the minority has twice as many Senators as a state that has over 2000% more people like CA. Time to deal with these inequities give the states with more people more Senators or take away the Senators from the states with lower population. ND/SD each get one Senator that seems fair.

It's far, far worse than that. California's population in 2022 is about 39.66 million. The 21 least populous states have a total of 37.31 million. Those 21 states have 42 senators compared to California's 2. It takes a bit of nerve to call ourselves a representative republic. It takes unmitigated gall for the Republican party to insist that our system is rigged against it.

There must be a difference between the Senate and the House. The problem is that the Senate should only deal with domestic inter-states issues, not with Foreign Relations, and veto power over Budgets and Deficits; but at the same time the Senate is formed for more mature and supposedly wiser politicians, more capable for dealing with those issues. The real reason for the Senate is not explicitly said, because it would mean saying that The House has too many immature, sometimes loony, representatives. For two centuries the two-for-state worked because the polarization was not of most-of-the-little-ones in the minority of Popular Vote side, but now ....

This is how democracies die, by not adapting to the times that they exist in. Evolution: evolve or die. The irony is that the amendments were designed to do exactly that, but they cannot change the basic structures. Here in the UK, perhaps one of the oldest democratic structures (I hesitate to call it one of the oldest democracies), we also rarely have a govt with majority rule. The term "democracy" in its basic definition means rule by an elected representative rather than a hereditary ruler. However, today is often taken to mean majority rule. Our earliest Parliaments simply had an elected (by the nobility) assembly that advised the king and held the purse strings. That's the important bit. Parliament was elected by the wealthy, those with the land and ability to raise money and indeed armies. Today, although we still have a monarch who still exerts too much power, our leader is called a Prime Minister. Our current one, our very own clown with no clothes, is grabbing power and sees himself as some sort of Roman emperror. Yes, that is what we are now finding out. Deluded and dangerous... much like your Mr Trump.

Once again, a big thanks to Lawrence and the Last Word team for this continuing series, which has really cut past the civil war and authoritarian predictions. It has certainly helped clarify my own thinking on the subject. In particular, this segment points out something that has been ignored or disregarded by the more fatalistic prognosticators: the strength of resistance to Trump and Trumpism.
Whenever some pundit or commenter remarks that "we are headed toward authoritarianism," or the like, I feel like it disrespects the many, many millions of people who vehemently oppose Trump and the dark path the GOP seems to be following. There seems to be an implicit assumption among the fatalists that, while they agree with the democratic opposition, they also assume that when push comes to shove, the opposition will roll over and accept authoritarianism. This is, frankly, insulting to the activists who continue to work, to donate and march and show up to school board meetings and townhalls, to fight this madness.
I continue to think that what we are most likely headed for is a long, drawn out nullification crisis, where red and blue states will refuse to acknowledge federal authority when it comes from the opposing faction.
