I made two factual MISTAKES in this video. Apparently the most Southerly vineyards are now in Patagonia. Also, the hole in the ozone has repaired itself above New Zealand…
Otronia is the producer, located in Sarmiento in the Chubut Province of Patagonia. 45.55S vs Black Ridge Vineyards in Alexandra (Central Otago) at 45.26S.
People make mistakes. People that acknowledge them and correct them can be forgiven easily.
Love that Ozone repairs … just like carbon. Drink on.
I would buy Rousseau Chambertin under screwcap, if I decided to spend that kind of $$. Natural corks begone. Why should we tolerate corked wines? Good video highlighting the fact that outstanding pinot comes from lots of places.
True. I hate it. Especially when it's a great wine. I had a Marquis d'alesme 2016 that was corked a year ago. That sucks.
That is a grail wine for me!!
Rippon and Felton Road have always tasted amazing in my experience. I tasted an 06 Calvert from Felton Road a couple years ago and it was in great shape. Great work thanks for the review!
Thank you! Yes Felton Road is delisssshhhh
Great to hear a Martinborough shout out! I grew up in the region and my childhood friend's parents were minemakers there, the first wine I ever tried. New Zealand has some truly beautiful vineyards, I feel very lucky to have witnessed many of them.
Are they still making wine?
I would absolutely buy fine wine with a screw cap closer. There is still a place for corks but we have much better options these days.
I am Team Stelvin as well!
A Martinborough pinot worth checking out is the Te Kairanga John Martin. There's some really nice pinot being made about half an hour north of the town, in the Masterson area: Johner do a excellent value estate pinot, and there's a wine previously named Lime Hill, but remarked now as B Wine, quite burgandian in style with some clear limestone rich soils characteristics, quite textural.
Nicccce, thanks!
The Clare Valley winemakers got together and released a portion of their wine under screwcap in 2000; the Kiwis followed in 2001. I still have a few Australian rieslings from the early 2000’s and they have remained amazingly fresh whilst still developing lovely secondary flavours.
I am a fan of screwcaps and have tasted some marvelous aged wines under them!
Great review, a chance to get to know them even though they are out of my price range 😀
There are fabulous NZD Pinots at all price points too
recently went to a tasting comparing new zealand, oregon, and california pinots .All of them were unique to there terrain and all of them were interesting wines. I have to give the nod to the sonoma varieties for their more complexity and finish. the new zealand wines were not from the martinborough region so im anxious to try them.(although when your spending 100.00 or more screw caps dont allow coravin). i appreciate your knowledge and hope someday you put together a wine trip for people who take wine serious like me.
Ahhh thanks so much! There is a Coravin top for screwcaps and needle based systems but it obviously doesn't hold as long. Craggy Range makes more affordable options too.
Can’t wait to try the Range selection…
They are a good producer
Had the Ata Rangi 2012 Pinot recently with eleven other wines. Just an outstanding Pinot, that for me was the winner of the night. Gave it 96p even though it's not a great year in Martinborough.
OUTSTANDING producer!
I found the pinot from the Waitaki region (North Otago) really interesting. But they are hard to find.
Yes tough to find outside the country!
@@drmatthewhorkey would highly recommend Valli Waitaki Vineyard Pinot Noir if you can find a bottle! Basically anything Valli is exceptional
Very good producer!
I support screwcaps! One of the most discouraging things in this world is to smell a wine that you just opened and realize that it's corked. Major downer!
Such a BIG downer!!!
Burgundy style... Any idea which pinot noir clones they use? Or in general which PN clones are mostly used in NZ?
Abel clone is supposedly widely used, legend says it was a cutting from DRC smuggled into the country
After pouring out an expensive corked wine once, all about the screw top. Forget about the show of withdrawing a cork. Twist and pour.
Agreed!!!!
Years ago I had a few bottles of Matariki Pinot from Hawkes Bay. Thought they were outstanding! have you tried this wine and, if so, what do you think of it? Interesting side note, "Matariki" is the Maori name for the Pleiades Constellation, also known in Japanese as " Subaru"!!
Haven’t tasted it yet
No problem buying expensive wines ( 70 to 100 us ) with screw caps if I will enjoy in a 3 years window and they are ready to drink . If they are not ready to drink , I would think well , cause the screwcap is really hermetic and I don’t think the wines will evolve in the same way as the cork ones . Do you have info about that? Cheers !
I've tasted some STELLAR aged wines under screwcap. With Aussie and NZD wines under screwcap, the way they are made they are usually ready to drink outta the gate!
@@drmatthewhorkey good to know ! Thanks for the answer!!
Martinborough rocks.
As an Aussie I have no problems at all buying expensive wines with Stelvin closures.
ALWAYS FRESHER.
You will see an Aussie vs Kiwi Pinot Noir video on the channel soon!
@@drmatthewhorkey
Look forward to it. I usually find NZ Pinots superior but there are exceptions as in Farr’s wines.
The transparent penetration of NZ, even the least expensive! Sometimes lean but clean. Could you share some info about Pinot Clones, please? Coury clone?
You’ll see a video talking about Pinot clones soon
I just purchased 4 bottles of Luna Estate Pinot Noir 2019 Screw Tops. The only wine I found in my area from Martinborough. After Dry Jan I will try it and hope I like it. I should since many times your reviews are spot on with mine. Keep up the great work Matthew!! 🍷🍷
Niceee!! Enjoy it.
Arent these way too young to drink?
Remember when I was in NZ I brought a bottle of the best German Pinot noir as a gift to a friend. He nonchalantly opened up a random bottle of NZ Pinot and the quality blew me away!
Not too young! Also they are southern hemisphere where the harvest is at the beginning of the year. So in essence they are almosf a year older than we are accustomed too in Northern Hemisphere
Very interesting thank you! My friends age their (Austrian and Italian) red wine for at least 8-10 years before its ready to drink. Certainly depends on the make, grape and part of the world where the wine is made. So very interesting that such high class and expensive wines are drinkable so young. Certainly also they will age well I guess.@@drmatthewhorkey
What does the wine nerd do when a gnat lands in their glass? Pick it out give it a squeeze, and yell spit it out.
Unfortunately they release a disgusting aroma in the wine. I have to dump it out and change glasses
The only Pinot Noir worth drinking is Burgundy Pinot Noir. I may be wrong , but I have developed this opinion over the years.
Ohh wow, I don't feel the same way but it's all good!
@@drmatthewhorkey Blame it on Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Muhahahahaha
Burgundy is amazing and such a statement based on One wine is maybe too extreme....the problem with Burgundy is value.
