    I made two factual MISTAKES in this video. Apparently the most Southerly vineyards are now in Patagonia. Also, the hole in the ozone has repaired itself above New Zealand…

      Otronia is the producer, located in Sarmiento in the Chubut Province of Patagonia. 45.55S vs Black Ridge Vineyards in Alexandra (Central Otago) at 45.26S.

    I would buy Rousseau Chambertin under screwcap, if I decided to spend that kind of $$. Natural corks begone. Why should we tolerate corked wines? Good video highlighting the fact that outstanding pinot comes from lots of places.

      True. I hate it. Especially when it's a great wine. I had a Marquis d'alesme 2016 that was corked a year ago. That sucks.

    Great to hear a Martinborough shout out! I grew up in the region and my childhood friend's parents were minemakers there, the first wine I ever tried. New Zealand has some truly beautiful vineyards, I feel very lucky to have witnessed many of them.

    A Martinborough pinot worth checking out is the Te Kairanga John Martin. There's some really nice pinot being made about half an hour north of the town, in the Masterson area: Johner do a excellent value estate pinot, and there's a wine previously named Lime Hill, but remarked now as B Wine, quite burgandian in style with some clear limestone rich soils characteristics, quite textural.

    The Clare Valley winemakers got together and released a portion of their wine under screwcap in 2000; the Kiwis followed in 2001. I still have a few Australian rieslings from the early 2000’s and they have remained amazingly fresh whilst still developing lovely secondary flavours.

    recently went to a tasting comparing new zealand,oregon, and california pinots .All of them were unique to there terrain and all of them were interesting wines. I have to give the nod to the sonoma varieties for their more complexity and finish. the new zealand wines were not from the martinborough region so im anxious to try them.(although when your spending 100.00 or more screw caps dont allow coravin). i appreciate your knowledge and hope someday you put together a wine trip for people who take wine serious like me.

    Years ago I had a few bottles of Matariki Pinot from Hawkes Bay. Thought they were outstanding! have you tried this wine and, if so, what do you think of it? Interesting side note, "Matariki" is the Maori name for the Pleiades Constellation, also known in Japanese as " Subaru"!!

    No problem buying expensive wines ( 70 to 100 us ) with screw caps if I will enjoy in a 3 years window and they are ready to drink . If they are not ready to drink , I would think well , cause the screwcap is really hermetic and I don’t think the wines will evolve in the same way as the cork ones . Do you have info about that? Cheers !

    Arent these way too young to drink?

    • @drmatthewhorkey
      @drmatthewhorkey  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Not too young! Also they are southern hemisphere where the harvest is at the beginning of the year. So in essence they are almosf a year older than we are accustomed too in Northern Hemisphere

      Very interesting thank you! My friends age their (Austrian and Italian) red wine for at least 8-10 years before its ready to drink. Certainly depends on the make, grape and part of the world where the wine is made. So very interesting that such high class and expensive wines are drinkable so young. Certainly also they will age well I guess.@@drmatthewhorkey
