I visited Japan once and my friends and I went to a local bar. The owner warned us to stay away from the back because the guy currently hanging out there is a gang leader of a major branch of the Yakuza. They talked about him fondly though. Apparently he liked his hometown so he protects his people (he punishes petty crimes himself, so his streets are safe). It just so happens that he got involved in the gang because he needed money at the time. Turns out he was damn good at his job though and rose all the way up haha. So I guess it is possible to be a "nice" gangster.

I used to be a C/O in a fed prison and George Jung was one of my inmates. He was actually a pretty chill dude to talk to. He is out of prison now. I asked him if it was worth it and would you do it all over again and he said he had no regrets and had a blast LoL

My grandpa used to get people to write him hot checks. We live in the US, and back then it was easy to scam people and get away with it, so he would tell people he would build a start-up for their business, they would write him a check, and then skip town after he cashed it. He got arrested, but he's so rich he apparently eats with the warden in prison, which is uncommon.

My great great grandfather and his other brothers were kind of in the mob with Joe, but Joe was by far the top dog in the family. So when Joe died they all quit the mafia. They were like “fuck this shit” and dipped. I’m glad. Like I can’t imagine if my family was in that business for longer. If they were then my grandpa would’ve probably grown up witnessing his grandfather be a part of it. That would’ve been crazy if my grandpa had remembered some of it.
