    On May 31, 2011, the Atlanta Thrashers ceased to exist forever. With that, Atlanta became the first city ever in NHL history to lose two teams in 31 years.

      Nobody goes to Florida Panthers games. They're playing in an empty arena, while there are other cities that would *love* to have an NHL team.

      The Coyotes made a mistake by leaving downtown Phoenix for suburban Glendale.
      Had they stuck around and see Talking Stick Arena renovated to accommodate hockey, they Coyotes would've had more money.

    I respectfully disagree. With stable ownership, a team could have flourished in Atlanta. Atlanta enjoyed the highest attendance numbers of any expansion team in history in its inaugural year, but years of poor ownership killed the franchise.

    the Thrashers did have some fans, but hockey in Atlanta wasn`t a good mix. football and baseball (and basketball for that matter) are gaining popularity in Atlanta. after losing Dany Heatly, the Thrashers ended up dealing with an empty building. i knew a few Thrashers fans, but they lost interest because of the team losing so much. they only made the playoffs once, in 2007. they lost in the first round. Atlanta just wasn`t the city for hockey.

      But Bettman was so determined to not admit failure in Arizona, he allowed the city of Glendale to subsidize the team for another year on the backs of taxpayer money. And 7 years onward, and the financial situation is still a joke in Arizona. Losing $20 million a year and a team playing in a half-empty arena. And Bettman is still stubbornly "committed to hockey in Arizona.
      Any sane business man will tell you that if you have never turned a profit on an investment after a few years, it's time cut your losses. The Coyotes have never turned a profit since moving to Arizona in 1996. That's 20+ years of being in the red. It's just not financially justifiable to keep losing that much money over such a long period. And who has to subsidize those losses? The teams that are profitable.

    • @FischerFan
      @FischerFan Před 4 lety +1

      @@pomerlain8924 Don't forget that, at the time, the NHL owned the Coyotes. The League purchased the team out of bankruptcy.
      The Thrashers, OTOH, were not in bankruptcy and their owners were desperate to unload the team.

    • @kobyschechter8163
      @kobyschechter8163 Před 2 lety

      @@pomerlain8924 And Gila River Arena is kicking the Coyotes out after this season. That team should’ve never moved from Winnipeg. From the country where hockey was invented to a DESERT. The Coyotes should move to Houston or Quebec City. The Sabres should also move. They’ve had less than 10,000 fans at every single home game this year. And less than 10,000 by A LOT.

    well, that`s my point. poor management is a reason Atlanta sports teams in general aren`t that good. hockey in Atlanta can still flourish, but it would take new management that actually knew what they were doing, a good fanbase, and great players. the Thrashers were a promising team, but they just couldn`t get the players neccessary to compete. the management did suck (i agree on that) because they only made a few good deals, while the rest were draft busts or amateurs who were not NHL caliber.

    • @Shawn6751
      @Shawn6751 Před 2 lety

      Atlanta had opportunities and it's time for Savannah to take the notice of the NHL by selling out our arena every night and heck the NHL just may return back to Georgia. It won't be Atlanta but Savannah getting an ECHL team and not having a professional team since the Savannah Sand Gnats left and heck it's either getting drunk on River Street, watching watered down baseball of the Savannah Bananas, going ghost hunting, etcetera. There's a reason why it was named the EnMarket Arena because it will grab the NHL's attention so I'm supporting this new hockey team yet to be named by going to their home games almost every chance I get.
      We have a melting pot in Savannah where hockey can thrive and hell the Stanley Cup might be drenched with a lot of Wet Willie's alcohol, jello shots and all if we Savannahians and the whole state of Georgia including Atlanta celebrate a Stanley Cup Finals win in the State of Georgia.
      Savannah with right ownership from somebody who lived near Savannah all of his or her life before becoming an owner, he or she will do everything there is in the book to bring the Stanley Cup to Savannah.

      Could it? The City of Montreal didn’t give a shit about the Expos(Judging from what the Expos was drawing their final years). Why do think they moved to Washington in 2005? Thank God that Asshole Bud Selig didn’t erase the Expos(And the Minnesota Twins) from Major League Baseball when he said that “Baseball was under contraction”. I guarantee you, had Selig been successful in wiping out Montreal and Minnesota from Major League Baseball, Fans Everywhere would be making life A Living Hell for Bud Selig’s Milwaukee Brewers!
