  • Rachelle from Originally Worn explains what the weird spot or color is on your white painted pieces. How to tell if this is an issue with bleed through of tannis or stains or just bad coverage. Then, how to fix your bleed through. (Bad coverage just needs another coat of paint.)

Your video saved me. I was painting my oak kitchen cabinets white and experienced bleed through on some of the doors. I feared having to sand and start again (and no one on this earth hates sanding more than I do). I used Kilz spray on the areas where I had the bleed through and it fixed it great. Light sanding and top coat and they are perfect. Thank you!!!!

Thanks! Great timing as I’m fighting with a dresser right now. So frustrating. So far 1 coat chalk paint then bleed through so 2-4 coats shellac, still bleed through, then 3 coats of stainblocking primer and it’s almost gone. It’s water based though. If it’s still there in the morning I’ll try oil based. Thanks again!

Cheryl Bergman OHHH MY GOODNESS! All those layers, all that work!! I feel for ya, I’ve been there. Yes, if needed switch to the oil kilz... it will do the trick. I don’t know why, but the oil vs water does make a difference.

Do you do a coat of paint first to see where the bleed through is then use the Kills? Do you ever just use the Kills first?

Lucienne Henneberry I usually do a coat of paint first, in case there isn’t any bleed through. Plus I think Annie Sloan is the best primer around, so I like it under anything else. But if I am working with raw wood or really sanded wood, I will go straight to kilz.
