  • In this video I am gonna compare the free VST Dexed against the Arturia DX7 from the V Collection 8. These two synths are based on the original Yamaha DX7 FM Synth that came in the 80s and had been used on many hits songs. For comparison, we used many of the patches from the ROM1A, ROM1B, ROM2A and ROM2B.
    Enjoy :)

Really should have gain matched. Big oversight.

Korg Opsix User here. As I just read in the Arturia manual, it has non-sine waveforms as well. This makes a difference, as it expands the possibilities significantly.
Dexed, volca fm , megafm, reface dx, and digitone have sine only.
Tx81z, Opsix and arturia dx7 have different numbers of waveforms.

Reface DX can do feedback apparently so it should be able to do saw waveform. I checked it on my Opsix and apparently the non-HD version of SAW is exactly the same as sine with 60 or 61% of feedback. Waveforms on analyzer look identical. Opsix can of course do more than that. You can also get saw on DX7... and without filters it doesn't matter that much. Opsix is definitely the best FM synth as it can do a lot more than other FM synths eg. proper substractive synthesis. Heck it does substractive synthesis better than most substractive synths :)

Dexed + TAL chorus is the best free thing you can get.

The other difference between the two plugins is CPU impact. You can run 8 instances of DEXED for less impact than the Arturia DX7. I'll have to compare to OPS7 as well. Another small difference is that DEXED is available for Mac Windows, Linux and Raspberry PI. The filter on the Arturia is mono btw too.

To my ear, the DEXED consistently sounded better. The Arturia was muffled by comparison. That may be partly because the volume was not matched and louder usually tickles our ear a bit better and the DEXED just sounded louder, tho that might have something to do with the more open high end of the DEXED. But to me the DEXED had a crisper, fuller sound while the Arturia honestly sounded a bit lame by comparison. If you are a sound designer and that is your main reason for getting one, there may be a slight argument for the Arturia, but if you just want to play the thousands of patches available for the instrument, to me DEXED wins hands down. And it's hard to beat free when it is this good. I have an original DX7 by the way, but use DEXED now because it's so easy to use and loading sounds is a no brainer. Did I say it just sounds great? I am not much of a sound designer, so I will leave that part of the argument to someone else.

If I understand it correctly there's also this thing that the Arturia DX7 is more sensitive to velocity so everything will sound more muffled unless you play it with higher velocities, in that regard the comparison was a bit unfair and as you're saying everything sounded muffled

Awesome video. Under cart there is no ROM1A, ROM1B, ROM2A and ROM2B. Where can I find them? Thanks in advance!

Best DX7 VST is without question OPS7 by Plogue. I compared several VSTs: FM8/Arturia DX7V/Dexed and OPS7 is the winner. Its sound generation and the way it reads original DX7 patches is the most accurate. With OPS7 you can also layer sounds, just like a DX7 mk2.

The Arturia DX7 sounds so quiet and smooth like a filter was applied, not thus with Dexed, I think some different arrangement is causing this.

I am not sure it's a good or bad thing. I like a clear sound. Dexed sounds more original that way.

I never thought I'd say my REAL DX7 is so much more realistic than something, but you just can't beat real. I suppose it might help greatly if you mic an amp of the virtual playing through it. direct VST's sound like dog shit.
