    Great review and love r/budgetkeebs, would encourage everyone to check it out! On less expensive caps, not super cheap but mid-range, I've found many dye subs are actually thicker because the double-shot ones are starting to stop the second color halfway through the keycap making them sound thinner than the dye subs. I'm also with ya on the knobs, I've programmed some of my Neo65 keys for volume but don't have a mute on it and that is definitely a disadvantage. After your song comment I look at this keyboard and see "the eyes of a cat in black and blue" :)

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Před 5 měsíci

      "Shiny diamonds" ;)
      Agreed on what I call top doubleshot, where it's really only at the inner top of the cap, which I feel should be labelled as such; until recently, doubleshot meant the entire body of the key. What, are they saving 0.001 cents per key?
      Mute is a must, for me at least!
      Thanks for the kind words about r/BudgetKeebs, we do our best to keep it fun and friendly, see you there, cheers!

    Very good sound on this board. And a great price for aluminium. Mad that they'll add switches and keycaps for $14, and they're good ones. Maybe they just hate selling naked boards! 😂

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Před 5 měsíci +1

      $14 for a set of switches and nice keys is not a bad deal at all, I could not see a real reason to go barebone when it's ready to go for such a small added amount.

  • @marshallmaia8130

    Would it be possible to make this board sound more poppy and clacky? I tried putting HMX Hyacinth V2U on them and as expected, the board made them sound muted and bassy.

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Před 4 měsíci

      It's likely, but I can't give any direction until I actually get in there and see how it's built. Not for nothing, I loaded some MMD Princess switches in mine and it made a huge difference in sound level and poppiness.

  • @WarrenLeggatt
    @WarrenLeggatt Před 5 měsíci +2

    Love the way the budget market is really starting to move more now. The new GMK87, the AL71 etc. It has really started to drive the price of boards down.
    I just wish Yunzii had made this and the 71 QMK/VIA based and done away with the closed software. I find all the iffy gdrive links to drive software such a turn off on some of the cheaper boards and VIA support would remove all that problem, probably for a few $ price increase for the better MCU
    Looks an interesting board though

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Před 5 měsíci

      Many manufacturers are coming to the realization that they will need to invest to get those MCUs and deliver open source software since Windows is not the only OS. Not only that, I think it would save them significant time in developing those closed source "drivers" as building QMK driver is not a complex process and should be able to be written and tested within a day or two per keyboard, even less if they develop templates, they'd just need to insert the matrix, build, and go.
      I think we'll start to see a lot more of these affordable boards adopt it. Granted, it's not full VIA, but is a step in the right direction - the GMK67 was released with closed source software, but the GMK81/87 are "VIA" compatible, which is a good signal of what's yet to come.

    • @WarrenLeggatt
      @WarrenLeggatt Před 5 měsíci

      @@MechKeyboards Yep, I am waiting on my GMK87, just left China from the tracking :)
      So how did they manage VIA without QMK or they have basically provided a VIA wrapper over their existing code in the board.
      Yep, building a QMK map from ground up is actually not that bad as really just a mirror of the wire traces. I am looking for a case at the mo to try my first hand wired build. I could see it would save them a load. Will be interesting to see how the year plays out now, I half expect a raft of interesting Aluminium boards in the space. I am sort of sorry to see CNC acrylic go out of fashion. I have an ACR Top 75 and love the case on that, wimilar to the little 40% you did recently but scaled up.
      I guess once you move to cnc though then Alu is what people want now.

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Před 5 měsíci

      @@WarrenLeggatt my guess is that they did some USB capturing and built/modified the firmware to send out the VIA signals, I don't believe QMK is involved, especially when they are wireless, only one MCU that I know of works with both.
      To be honest, I don't think acrylic is gone for good. Aluminum is the "material of choice" at the moment and there almost seems to be a race to the cheapest. Once everyone has one (or three), they'll cycle back to acrylic, wood, and other materials that will help them stand out from the pack. I enjoy acrylic as well, but all the other ones that I own are stacked acrylic, which is still decent, but I love that single CNC'd body and I want more! 😁

    • @WarrenLeggatt
      @WarrenLeggatt Před 5 měsíci

      @@MechKeyboards Hopefully. I have come around to wood also recently. Just dropped one of my Minila layout boards into a wood case with 2mm silicon in the base (All that would fit lol) and that has a great sound profile to it. Has a far "warmer" sound profile to Alu I think

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Před 5 měsíci

      @@WarrenLeggatt I've yet to get a wooden case, but it's long been on my list. I know someone with a CNC and should just breakdown and buy me a nice slab of Rosewood and have him print me up a nice 65%.
      Soon.
      Cheers!

    Which Keyboard out of the AL66, Cidoo V65 or Womier S-K71 no matter the price?

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Honestly the AL66. Yes, the S-K71 sounds lovely as well, but I've incorporated having a knob into my workflow, not that I couldn't just use the knob on the numpad I use whenever I'm on a TKL or smaller board, but it much easier for my hands to find the knob when it's just a few keys away :)
      I have a stack of six V65 V1/V2, every single one with issues. Cidoo is owned by Epomaker and I just cannot recommend their products.

      @@MechKeyboards Alright, thanks for your rapid answer on the topic😅 Due to me living in Germany the Womier is about 110 Euro and Yunzii is 15 Euro cheaper. I don't care about the knob too much as I am going to use to keyboard mostly for casual gaming. Do you reckon it is going to be good and not gonna have any problems with latencies?
