      Also, don't forget that Gooseworks said Jax deserves to be there more than any other member of the digital circus, so he could be a generally horrible person, which is probably amplified by his method of coping with the circus.
      I dunno what I'm really saying here, but Jax is probably gonna get a lot worse... we should just expect him to start doing increasingly horrible things to others, as I have a feeling that is where his character is headed in future episodes.

      My theory as opposed to Jax being an npc, is that he was the only one who intentionally played the game. Everyone else could've been game devs, but Jax could've been a beta tester, since he seems to know the most about the game and talks about being disappointed, he also plays the game the way a player would. Game devs would likely play it as intended and go through the motions, but Jax plays it the way many of us would, and tries to see where his limits are and cause chaos to the NPCs he doesn't have an attachment to. I'll likely have a new theory by the next episode but this is my main one with the context we currently have

    46:09 I have no idea what Mat's on about here. "I'm already breaking" is a pretty standard thing to say when you're trying to keep your composure and not cry, and is often used at not only funerals but things like weddings.

      @KrystalTide Před 24 dny +24

      mat has said this before but with media and specifically video content stories that are planned, most if not all dialogue is chosen for a reason. The "I'm already breaking" line can be taken literally by emotionally breaking down bc of a funeral, but matpat (and the theorist team) like to think "meta-ly",, finding of theres a second reasoning for the choice of words- like breaking character instead.
      Both ways ar interesting takes of a single dialogue line which makes theories really interesting to see from different people, but it can lead to you overthinking the simplest dialogue or lines said

    • @mallk238
      @mallk238 Před 24 dny +47

      @@KrystalTide unfortunately this runs the risk of *over*thinking it. I've heard writers talking about theorists before. When Gravity Falls was still on, the showrunner once said in an interview that while he loved seeing fans get so excited and writing theories and all, he noticed that a lot of fans tended to approach stories from a "conspiracy" perspective while the writers have to approach it from a STORY perspective. So the theorists tend to over-complicate and read too much into creative decisions that had far more straight forward reasons behind them.
      An example of this type of thing happening might be how in episode one there's a ton of biblical imagery and a lot of people based theories off of that. Gooseworx later said in an interview that she "thought the idea of putting religious imagery in this context would be really funny".
      While there's nothing wrong with trying to read super deep into these kinda stories it feels as though these guys here were so focused on their theories that they were missingg the forest for the trees. Key information that has already been established was completely forgotten (such as pomni knowing that this is a video game) and information that has never been established in the show has been assumed as canon (such as the characters not remembering who they were before). Sure, it's not the end of the world that they would forget on an unscripted watching of the show...but it can feel a bit frustrating when they pause every few seconds to talk about something that is entirely wrong if you go back and watch even the first minute of episode one.

I think in a Help Wanted 2 stream he was trying to find the hidden plush secrets for everyone and an image of a lightning bolt was on the wall in the hub with a line through it. He went on to think of glamrock freddy and other lightning aspects but in reality it was just "no power"

    • @mallk238
      @mallk238 Před 24 dny +12

      @@KrystalTide well put! A good theory (in my opinion) shouldn't necessarily treat canon as a grab bag of "lore" that you can jumble together to make a story that the theorist thinks should be, but should instead try to make something that fits into the narrative of the story in some way. Like sure, you COULD argue that some character is secretly the mastermind behind it all because they said this one line in an awkward way...orrr you can look at that scene with other scenes that happen later and consider that this is just because that character is awkward. Like what would be the one that's more useful to the writers in that moment? Like sure, SOMETIMES it turns out to be a super secret plot twist hidden in plain sight...but that's rarer than some people want it to be and I see it time and time again that people will hype up some big theory and be disappointed when they learn that it wasn't actually as grandiose as they were hoping it would be.

We essentially know what Pomni knows, so we don't need to be there for the exposition, just for Gummiegoo's existential crisis afterwards.

    Just the idea that Caine CAN mistake an NPC for a human should give everyone pause. Is there really no difference between even a sophisticated AI program, and a digital representation of a human mind, in this system? Such that even another AI could possibly be deceived by one?
    Which begs a question. If there is an NPC among the 'human' cast, does Caine even know it? Or did one sneak in?

      it is intriguing, but let's not forget that we already have context clues that Caine can and has lied. He might be able to tell the difference between them, and is simply making excuses similar to the exit in the first episode. I personally believe this is a red herring and that Gooseworx may have even intentionally presented it in a way people would react to. remember that most shows give tons of context clues that they DON'T subvert, meaning that most can actually be relied upon to help understand the story.

    jax’s eyes, when the funeral is brought up, quickly shrinks for a moment as he looks straight on, a sign of thinking/remembering, and then looking away again as he walks away. It might be just me, but I feel this shows jax is trying to avoid the topic of a funeral, perhaps due to unpleasant memories. This could also explain his behavior, as maybe he had a close friend and was kind once, but the friend abstracted, jax lost his world, and to cope, he’s just trying to find enjoyment in any way he can and lash back out at the world by killing npc’s, harassing other people, etc, all in an attempt to avoid his problems, his trauma, and the funeral reminded him of that, so he wanted to get away as fast as possible, as far as possible.

    Interesting thing to point out, I think
    When Jaxi gets "mad/annoyed" at Ragatha naming the funeral services, he doesn't immediately get mad/annoyed, but he actually makes a sad/sorrowful face in the first fragment of the second before quickly changing it, as if he's trying to stay in character, pushing his true feelings aside.
    Also, the scene where Pomni is in the darkness and the others grab her hand to help her up, Jaxi's hand isn't there, BUT! I think it's important to note that that scene is Pomni's thoughts/imagination, and that the reason Jaxi isn't there may very well be the fact that Pomni doesn't believe that he would be there because of his absence through the memorial.

  • @alexismyers6053
    @alexismyers6053 Před 25 dny +260

    They did show Caine DID fix Pomni’s hand in the pilot. It was Pomni’s right/red hand that glitched, not her left/blue one, which is the arm that abstracted in her dream. And we see her hands are solid through episode 2. So it was fixed.
    And Ragatha talking Pomni she isn’t mad about the day before wasn’t really passive-aggressive, if only for the fact that it’s HER saying it. In the first episode, she did something similar when asking Pomni for help when Koufmo attacked her. “Please help me… or not, it’s ok, I understand.” I think she’s socially awkward with low self-confidence. Like “it’s ok, OF COURSE you don’t want to same ME, I know I’m not worth it” and “don’t worry about yesterday, I forgive you. I understand why you left me, I would have left me too.” She seems like a socially awkward, self-deprecating social butterfly. She wants to make other happy and feel welcomed because she feels she has no other use, but she fumbles about it not knowing how to do that.

    edit: I took a class in game design, and there was *definitely* a point where we studied the different types of players and the categories they fall into. Jax and Ragatha are definitely opposites in this respect. Ragatha seems to be the type to immerse herself in whatever kind of adventure Caine makes for them while Jax is just an agent of chaos. We haven't seen much of the others to categorize them, but I wouldn't be surprised if each character represents a different player type.

      Gangle is probably the wishy-washy type of player, who gets super hyped for a game/update but then gets their enjoyment ruined for one reason or another, be it an element in the game or other players. I feel like this is emphasized by how she has started both episodes with her happy mask and an upbeat attitude only to have the happy mask shattered (once by Jax (another player) and once by an NPC)
      Or in the same vein, she represents people who are discouraged easily whenever something becomes a little more challenging.
      Kinger likely represents an older player who is curious about gaming but is totally confused and out of their element.
      Kinger is the oldest of the main cast, being 48 years old iirc. He is, in theory, from a generation where there were either no video games or very simplistic ones (pong, 8-bit graphics, etc). It would make sense for him to be completely overwhelmed and constantly confused/lost. It also makes sense for him to focus on the few elements he DOES understand, such as insects
      Zooble could represent the player who is very practical and doesn't really care about appearances. For example, if playing a game like Stardew Valley, they have a farm full of machines and crops. Everything on their farm serves a purpose, either to help their levels or profits. Nothing is there for aesthetic reasons, they play strictly by function over form.
      Alternatively, since Zooble's appearance is confirmed to change every episode, they could be the opposite extreme, where they wear whatever armor pieces they like best. They don't care if their costume doesn't match or if all the decorations on their Animal Crossing island clash, they like what they like and that's how they intend to play.
      Zooble also has the vibes of a "I don't do side quests" type of player. They are here for the main story/to reach the main goal, everything else is a waste of time.

    I really want to point out, as someone with dysnomia (literally: difficulty naming). We where only told that Pomni can't remember her NAME. It is possible to remember absolutely everything about something with years of detail and specifics and still forget it's name. It's real, it does happen. We don't know if she has forgotten anything else about her life yet, just her name!

    also- and this is a theory of my own i believe. the fact that Cain, in the beginning of the episode, said that he is "Testing out a new AI" tells me that this virtual universe that Pomni and the others find themselves in is still in development.
    Which also makes me think that maybe, unlike Pomni and the others, Cain is not a virtualized engram of a person. maybe they are the developer just playing their game/interacting with the universe they have built. Since it would be highly unlikely that a process/tread can not modify the code of the program it is part of since, well a program changing itself can lead to many problems.

    There’s a theory that Jax could be an NPC. I’m personally getting more and more into this idea. They recently released pins whose backgrounds showed the characters’ rooms. Everyone’s is normal, except for Jax. We see him outside of his door with the void behind it. With his advanced knowledge of constantly breaking the fourth wall, I think he’s an AI advanced far beyond what Caine intended. Maybe he was a normal NPC at one point, but slipped into the void and managed to find code somewhere in that, or was maybe an NPC used so frequently that he gained sentience. Not sure, but definitely leaning into this theory.
    (Another smaller theory I have is that Jax might be a hacker that got stuck. That’s a more out there thought, but still one I started to entertain).

    there is no "interpreting" the endign of the last episode: we are straight up SHOWN DIRECTLY that pomi's hand was fixed by caine along with ragatha. it's not a "theory", its something the camera zooms in on and shows us outright.
    The nightmare is meant to show how pomni is not only scared of abstracting like everyone else but that noone cares about her and would just forget about her if it did happen, which is also why she was distancing herself from everyone and acting like she was alone. it does not directly tie to her glitching hand.
