  • A 16mm film produced by Dunlop showing how to use Motorway grade roads, and the consequences when failing to do so with care. George Eyles stands over a wreckage or two in order to underline the safety message. A lot of this is shot from a Rover P6. The film dates to about 1970.

I remember the first time I drove on a motorway, we were 18, it was 1977 and we lived 100miles north of the nearest motorway. I was traveling to Devon with my best friend. His Dad made us read the Highway Code about motorway driving and quizzed us before we set off.

7:32 "He just sat there... and cremated." A very hard-hitting comment by that chap that was rescuing people in that pileup.

I couldn't believe that was actually what he said. Imagine being a witness to something like that! I don't think you'd get over it.

It was shocking seeing the footage of the pile up, as well as the state of some of the cars in close up.

If your car breaks down, pull over onto the hard shoulder! WHAT HARD SHOULDER!!!!!!!!! If it was necessary then, how come we don't need them now???? Motorways are far busier now than they were over fifty years ago! "Smart" motorways are death traps. The "smart" ones have hard shoulders.

Bloody scary to see motorways with no central crash barriers. When were they introduced.

Still a lot of sense in most of the statements made regarding car driving and safety.

Stop on the inside lane ( realise it’s no longer a hard shoulder) stand on the grass verge and watch a drunk foreign lorry driver plough into your car. Wait for the highway officers who pretend to be police officers. They will close the road for 48 hours and laugh at the endless queues of traffic building up.
