Poppy Playtime has been a game getting tons of traction recently. Before, I discussed why I don't like the approach the game has been seemingly taking to become popular. But since then, I found many, many interesting leads to show the MOBgames is not who you may think they are. Enchantedmob, a Minecraft animation studio, has had a fair share of allegations thrown at them in the past half-decade. Everything from greed, to harassment. That is what I am here to cover, this is the shady history of Poppy Playtime/Enchantedmob.
Special thanks to PosiDon and Artimation for giving me tips about the history and allegations of Enchantedmob!

One thing I rarely ever see brought up is the failed kickstarter for this game that was absolutely a scam. All tiers only got you chapter 1, and the kickstarter was to fund chapter 1. The kickstarter was poorly made in general and was very petty. However, when it completely failed, chapter 1 came out around 2 weeks after. It was absolutely shady as hell.

    • @Fathom15128
      @Fathom15128 Pƙed 2 lety +1336

Hell yeah. There is a line between getting money to fund a game, and starting a fundraising just for money when the game is nearly done. And as you said, the fact that it came out a few weeks later, even though the fundraising flopped is very shady and suspicious. It would take a company a lot longer than a few weeks to finish a game with 'little to no funds' and so the fact that Chapter 1 came out as polished and smooth as it did is a very curious and tell tale sign of something not being right behind the scenes

My opinion on this genre of “cute mascots turning dark” is how it doesn’t fit with the demographic of 5-10 year olds at all when you think about the context of these games. The whole reason this genre was such an interesting trope from the start was how it would change your view on what you grew up with back then, heck, bendy’s description on steam even says “a game that will ruin your childhood for cartoons” And not to mention these games are based on properties from the 30s-90s. I think these types of games were originally meant to go for a demographic who grew up with these specific mediums from the past but are now grown up to experience darker subjects. Trying to actually give a game like this a brand friendly appeal kinda ruins the point on what this genre was likely trying to go for.

Yeah that's what I like about Bendy, the Bendy mascot is adorable but it gets twisted into this awful deformed Ink monster thats plot relevant. It doesn't feel targeted at kids simply because of the mascot.
Poppy and Security Breach 100% do, sadly. It's why I prefer the old FNAF games and the latest one is just furry bait shoved in your face. And these videos explain the problem with Poppy.

I wouldn't say that it's for people growing out of kid related media because what is kid related media in the first place. Everyone can watch a cartoon for example no matter how old they get. Newer cartoon and animated movies even feature more deeper meanings that a kid simply can't understand. There are people that can be 20, 30 or more years old yet they still might watch a cartoon or animated movie that is worth it.

Fun fact: Last year, when I was in Year 9, we were making our own podcasts for English class. While most people went in groups and did their own topics, I went solo and made a whole podcast presented like a current affairs documentary based on the whole Mobgate controversy.
I discussed the origins, the animations, the harassment of Ekrcoaster and the plagiarism allegations between Venge and Poppy Playtime. And a lot of it was based on videos covering the controversy by Sheeprampage, Theft King and this video.
And I ended up with an 88% in the end.

I stopped supporting Poppy Playtime after the NFT controversy. Even then, the game felt *too* polished. It didn’t have the same charms as FNAF or even early Bendy games, it just felt like it was trying to replicate something for profit. Which, for what it’s worth, they didn’t do a bad job at. Now that I’ve learned more about them I truly hope big CZcamsrs stop giving the game and it’s company attention. It will be especially disheartening if they continue to profit off this.
Something about MOBGames that I never heard people discuss either, is their extremely overly sexualized FNAF animations. I wouldn’t have a huge issue with this, but it’s clear the demographic is supposed to be children. It rubs me the wrong way and in my opinion it’s something they should be heavily criticized for, though I see most people brush it off.

Out of all the “defanged horror games” that have come to existence after FNAF, I always thought Poppy Playtime was the weakest of them all. Poppy reminds me of early 2000s stuff. The white tile halls with painted kids murals look like the doctors offices from when I was little, which makes sense with the game's medical themes implying the toy business is a front.
The toys also fit the 2000s, with Cat-Bee and Candy Cat looking just like Littlest Pet Shops and Squinkies. Mommy Long Legs is like a Betty Spaghetty doll too (complete with the holes on the arms).

@@sato-kuu I agree there’s issues but think your solution is unrealistic. What do you want the industry to do, require ID? No one would do that because that’s such a huge risk. I’m 20 but I wouldn’t want to give anything from porn sites to Twitter my ID. And by the time I was 14 I was good enough at photoshop that I could’ve altered a photo to make it look like my ID. It’s on the parents to stop their kids from getting into what they shouldn’t. If we expect people to make the internet safe for children, other people will abuse that assumption of safety. Don’t blame the strippers if children break into a strip club.
My mom taught me to keep myself safe and why I should - and I never got into places on the internet sooner than I should have. I was taught both what was out there and to be careful when I was young
Edit: Clarifying that I don’t mean this to apply to inappropriate media with a target audience of children. Children breaking into a strip club is different than being invited in. But it would be extra helpful if kids were taught extra wariness - bad actors often won’t stop what they’re doing just because we tell them they’re in the wrong (and even if we do catch them, you can make and take down websites so quickly to avoid getting caught). Especially from a parental perspective of just trying to keep your kids safe, you can’t rely on no one trying to hurt them.

The biggest problem with the AnimationSins channel was how they targeted Ethan. It's worth mentioning they tried to bring him on to the team, he refused because he didn't want to abandon his youtube channel, and then AS started targeting him. A lot of their videos were on EkrCoaster's animations, they'd make rude remarks and add a sin just upon seeing EkrCoaster be mentioned in the intros, and even on videos not by EkrCoaster, he'd be mentioned. I remember them saying "take notes, EkrCoaster!" after positive feedback on something. No idea who the animator was, it could have even been them. AnimationSins was basically just for bullying Ekr and making him hated among FNAF MC animation's viewers for being competition
ETA: This is as compared to CinemaSins, who targets large companies that make movies and millions or even billions of dollars. Some people don't like Jeremy and his critiques but we can at least respect that he's punching up at The Mouse and other big moviemaking studios, and he's not like a major movie director punching down at a child's gacha club story. Animation Sins was EnchantedMob and ZAMination, leaders in minecraft animated music videos, making a channel dedicated to bullying a child who made his own smaller animation videos in the same style.

I think for me the thing that makes Luigi’s Mansion (the first one not the others) a good children’s horror game is that while it was made for all ages. It felt like a passion project that was carefully designed to be as enjoyable and accessible to everyone as possible just for the sake being a good game. Hell one of the developers literally spent multiple weeks just to program the dust, yeah I’m serious. I highly recommend you watch Beta64’s video on the development on the game

money. Everything about it feels like it was made to get the popular CZcamsrs and children to give as much money as possible. It feels like it has no passion in it and was only created because hey FNAF and Bendy are popular with kids we can do that too!

Another reason I’d like to point out is how Luigi’s mansion isn’t going for “child friendly thing and making it scary” and then trying to appeal to kids in the process. It’s using common horror tropes like ghosts and a mansion and making them accessible to a young audience and I think that’s the better choice to go. I think the target demographic for games that go for “children media turning scary” fits better for an audience that is growing out of those kinds of medias since the point is to feel fear on what you’ve enjoyed when you were a kid. That’s just my take on it

You see, there's absolutely no excuse for making such a mediocre horror game, just because it's meant for children. So, I stumbled across your channel thanks to Mat Pat/Game theory. And honestly I'm glad I did.
As a person who loves and lives with horror in their day to day life, and someone who wants to even speedrun and share more of a history of horror videogames or just videogames in general, seeing this honestly was very heartbreaking. I was aware of the story of FNaF, but never Hello Neighbor, or Poppy Playtime. I was decently aware of Bendy, and frankly, I'm glad that the only franchise of them all when I was a kid that I paid attention to was FNaF when I was still in high-school during what feels like forever ago now.
But I remember seeing this game, Poppy Playtime pop up every now and again, it always rubbed me the wrong way, a lot like Bendy. The games always looked very bare bones and were more style over substance. Because kids generally do not care about anything like proper and strong gameplay as long as it appeals to their attention spans, and appeals to their eye. And when a company that doesn't have a genuine love or care for what they're creating, a direction of where a game will go, will either be chaos or will become too simple, though their target demographics that they are aiming for now don't care enough for this sort of stuff. Between questionable gameplay/game design decisions, business practices, or general work conditions, kids aren't going to pay attention or even know where these discussions are happening.
As somebody who has always valued the importance of videogames on a historical level. Seeing what this company has done, it spits in the face of what not only the industry built for them to have this opportunity, trying to go as far as to taking advantage of people's charity with a questionable Kickstarter that didn't succeed but somehow the game's release was so close, but even going as far as to making something that looks uninspired, bare bones and only has a nice looking visual direction, it comes off as insulting to the people who they claim they are trying to advertise towards. And with everything this video has mentioned, it honestly was startling and horrifying in some cases. Because all I and many others saw on the surface was a new attempt at a unique horror experience.
This video made me never want to buy anything Poppy related and I'll try to encourage my friends and colleagues to do the same.
Love the content. Love the work you made here. Hope to see even more from you soon.

Here's the thing about Poppy Playtime, when I first saw that it was the next new trend in horror games, I didn't really get that hyped. Yeah I played it, but I decided to un-install the game because of two reasons:
    1. It's not creepy. I've played horror games with the similar premise and characters, which leads to the second reason...
    2. It's a Bendy and the Ink Machine clone. I don't know if people know about this, but Poppy Playtime is about an ex-employee returning to a major factory/attraction after a certain amount of years, and after they play the tapes and uses the weapons to their advantage, they activate a machine that gets the long lanky and horned-like creature with a demonic smile and tries to kill them.
Seriously, you can literally just play Bendy, and it would be better for you. Bendy and the Ink Machine took the idea of taking classic cartoons and making them demonic, into a fantastic game where to this day, it still has a huge following.

Poppy Playtime is a cheap cash grab Bendy rip off. They literally stole the entire idea, Bendy was a cartoon company that went bust, Poppy is a toy company that went bust. Joey wanted to bring his cartoons to life to cut animation costs, playtime wanted to bring their toys to life to make them more interactive. Bendy goes wrong as he doesn't have a soul and he goes on a rampage attacking the player. Huggy is presumably the same, they wanted to make him hug people but he wants to kill them. The player meets Alice Angel, a being with a soul, who helps us through various tasks in the game. Poppy is presumably sentient, either having soul or her AI is better than Huggy's as she was supposed to be interactive and Huggy just hugs, she's probably gonna help us through the game. And like you said, chapter 1 is shit and should be a demo instead. And then they did NFT's and lied saying they couldn't take them down due to a contract.

Actually, the creator of a game called venge (Ekrcoaster) claims poppy completely stole his story, even more than poppy appeared to copy bendy. This is even more annoying considering that venge is priced significantly lower than poppys playtime. And he also claims the creators of poppy bullied him. Worth looking into. Ps. @@NobodyUndefined I'm hopeful that Poppy Playtime's popularity will quickly fade into oblivion and forever be considered as the forgotten relic of the past, like many other mainstream horror games that are diagnosed by Fazbear Syndrome. It's a never-ending, destructive cycle of repetition that will almost certainly never cease. Of course, it will always have a community fanbase of impressionable young children that would gradually eat it up until there's barely anything left.
That being said, however, I think it's completely fine to take several inspirations from the stuff you genuinely love. Just try make it unique in terms of presentation and avoid the symptoms of Fazbear Syndrome (such as marketing for children, overemphasizing the pointless "lore" to an insufferable degree, and generally not having any passion or care put into it, with the sole purpose as a lucrative, money-printing machine).

Portal 2's underground lab section has always made me felt unnerved, particularly with the giant, empty factory stretching on beyond your sight, and to see that setting being utilized in an actual horror game is amazing, it works so well! The character designs are not that flashy and its creators are bad people. I feel that poppy playtime was the game that hurt the most. indie horror genre since the game for me is not even a little scary fnaf had in its first games a setting that scared you and hooked you to the story and what stood out to bendy was his artistic style and that he put new things to the table but poppy playtime is just one more recycling done by the way good video!

The one thing I've always noticed about this game (with even my first time hearing it and seeing it myself) it was EXACTLY like Bendy and the Ink Machine! But every time I tried explaining to people that it was the exact same people wouldn't listen and would just gush about the characters and the "amazing story" WHICH ISN'T EVEN ORIGINAL!! I had SOO much evidence like:
Coming back to an old job after some mysterious accidents occur
Experiments on people to make your "toys" (AKA CARTOON!!!) more "lifelike" to basically get more money and expand the business (*COUGH* JOEY *COUGH* DREW!!)
Getting the main "bad guy" chasing you at the very end to only be "taken" down so easily (Bendy and Huggy) HELL EVEN THEIR ENTERANCES ARE SOMEWHAT THE SAME BEFORE THEY START CHASING YOU!!
Posting it in chapters (Yes, I know that some other games do this, but what I'm talking about is the fact the quality changes for each episode and judging by the Trailer for chapter 2 for Poppy Playtime IT TOOK THE EXACT SAME IDEA FOR CHAPTER 2 FOR BATIM AND IT'S SO FUSTRATING)
The "tapes" you have to play and you getting to know certain "characters" through them (CMON EVEN SOME OF THE CHARACTERS HAVE ALMOST THE SAME PERSONALITIES)
Don't even get me started on how Poppy is the exact same as Alice Angel (and if MatPat is right she is basically taking the same approach as Alice.) She even says, "Your Perfect" and doesn't want you to die "Just Yet" CMON PEOPLE OPEN YOUR EYES!!! HECK, SHE EVEN GUIDES YOU AS SHOWN IN THE TRAILER!! I MEAN ITS REALLY SLAPPING YOU IN THE FACE AT THIS POINT!!
I could honestly go on and on, these games are almost the exact same and the fact nobody even listened or bothered was crazy! Until now!! I was so happy that this was finally brought to people's attention (I honestly thought I was going crazy) the whole game is BATIM with a Poppy Playtime fliter with a few minor tweaks and the fact the 2 creators fight over how their games are sOooOOoo similar but not even acknowledging the fact that they're both just a basic copy of Bendy is ludicrous. So, I am glad I finally saw people saying the same things I did. Sorry about this rant but Im just relieved I finally saw people talking about this.

Not to mention that it's obvious by the kind of videos that they make that they're going for a WAYYYYYY younger audience then what they were going for as early as two years ago (I feel confident in saying that not coming from someone who just grew out of it as I still get my fix on FNAF Minecraft animations from other CZcamsrs... and when they were still making Animation songs I was 16 and I was still loving them.
