The Great Loop 009 Finding an Anchorage

- Camping and Glamping is like an anchorage vs. a marina. There is something raw and visceral about relying completely on your own gear without tethering to the power outlet at a dock. My intellect screams for an easy way to get the dogs ashore. To get provisions. Etc. But my wilder, lizard brain yearns for solitude. A sense of self reliance. And the satisfaction that comes from achieving it. I think I can blame my lizard brain for getting me into this whole mess in the first place. Why stop listening to it now?

There’s a thousand channels full of half naked beautiful people sailing brand new $1 million boats all over the world with no problems at all. But I’d still rather watch Marty and his dogs fixing broken down engines. Hang in there Marty! We’re all rooting for you!
Couldn't agree more. It's nice to occasionally daydream and watch half naked women sailing million dollar cats around a tropical paradise, but there's something very relatable and ataractic about all of Marty's videos.
"Despite my idiocy, I hope I still inspire some of you guys".
Most people delete the bad/dumb stuff, but you share it, because you are as real as they come. Thats why I love your channel. You guys are awesome. And I am inspired. "Keep firing, assholes"-Lord Helmet
I'm a 40 year Merchant Mariner...if you eliminated all the dumb shit that happens on the water...It would be a very short video... :) Fair Winds!!
Trips like this rarely goes as planned and the fact you wont let a bad engine stop you is a inspiration. Most people would probably just have given up on the trip. Stay safe out there! can't wait to see more from this trip :)
A little coffee and Zoffinger in the morning to start my day.
For my Dad it was the journey, not the destination he looked forward to. He loved putting along at 6-8 knots while the rest of the family went stir crazy... lol
No ones perfect Marty, we all goof up once in awhile. I love your attitude.
Looking forward to many more adventures. It is truly an honor to be a subscriber to your channel. Thanks for sharing these great videos with us all and for making us feel like part of the journey. You definitely have a gift with video production..
We thank you almost every day Zoff for the Videos , you are definitely not a idiot 😎One day you will look back and say DAM I can’t believe I did that!!!! See ya Cool 🤠
You have been southernly converted. You are “fixin” to find out lol.
Good morning Marty, thanks for all the information on yachting. Have fun fishing 🎣 Looking forward to the next video.
I just mite try a small camp out trip on my tin boat this year. Thanks to you Marty.
where you anchored has a small mangrove island. that is my snook honey hole. Very jealous. Just moved North and miss that spot terribly. throw DOA rootbeer shrimp and BANGGG
I have been subscribed to you for a long time. Love your videos. I have been loving this series. I am going to enjoy the entire thing with yall!
Love the videos. No one is perfect and everyone has had mechanical issues. Great job on showing every thing!
Yep, make the most of it and fix it when you can. Looks like fun!
You have inspired me Marty, if not somewhat changed my life, clever people worry when it is not due as they understand that they don't know everything, this can be scary but you are more grounded and realistic than most, ironic really (saying you are grounded), keep up the good work buddy, love from Liverpool UK
Always a joy watching your videos Marty. Whether its modding a kayak, working around the shop, or adventuring out on your current endeavor, it's always a video I look forward to watching everyday. Most times, I will watch them while im on break at work, to me it feels like a bit of an escape, being able to share the adventure of someone else's. Helps pass the time just a little bit more. Thanks for the videos Marty! Stay safe, stay healthy, and safe travels!
Marty you are not a idiot you definitely inspire us all.
Love the explanation of everything, hopefully I make this trip! Thank you Marty! Keep up with the videos
Loving the daily videos!! Would love to maybe see some of the stuff y’all cook and are eating on the water!
Brother you're living the life don't be so hard on your self keep living your wonderful life
Kinda cold time of year for boating adventure headin' north.....You're much tougher than me....LOL
Workin' on my big plan to sell my canal shack off Boatdrinksasota Bay (w/2 boat lifts.....elec. for 23' Beachcat and manual for 12' rowing/sailing dink), then downsize to 19' travel trailer to continue my nomadic life I started back in the 60s-70s (with income this time!!...settled down in '73)....Hopefully, with no debt or large bills in a year or so, will start saving for something like a Rosborough 25' trailerable trawler with the intention of doin' the loop....Prefer twin outboards.....5 yr plan....Might be 80 by then, but need to shake things up to make it to 100.....arrrrr
You're an inspiration, buddy!!....Following your adventure....
your talk on maneuvering a boat and starboard & port is refreshing
around here owners don't even use common sense on the ramp & parking lot
We never “park” a boat, unless it on the trailer. There has been some discussion on fuel savings while running one engine, here’s an easy trick for those who want to test. Cruise at your hull speed, say 6 knots and sync your engines and note speed. Shut off one and note how much it slows down. It will prob drop to 4.5 knots, anything over 3 shows fuel savings. You can increase power to the running engine slightly to get back to 6 knots which will still be less than running on two.
Daunting undertaking and you're doing great. Love the content.
I saw how stressed me embarrassed you looked about the motor. I know that feeling. Your friend had your back though and I hope that made you feel better.
You keeping on is what’s inspiring so thank you for that. And like I said it was important to me that I could relate to the look on your face. It’s literally why I’m watching daily :)
Really enjoying your adventure 👍😃
I am enjoying "our" trip. Only problem on the Chesapeake Bay it is cloudy and some what windy, but fairly warm for this locale?
Totally inspired! Looks like some great fishing
Hey marty I recognize where your at it is noisy between the bridges,,hope red tide is not bothering you or your dogs ,,glad to see you back in ft.myers good luck
Love your channel and the daily updates. I have my fingers crossed for your new engine search. ...BTW I just subscribed to Michael’s channel.
A little local movie trivia for you, the first bridge to your east is where the old Edison bridge used to be. If you watch the second Creature from the Black Lagoon movie at the opening, the lady drives across that bridge and turns rt onto Edward's Drive and parks at the Yacht basin (across the river from where you anchored) got on the boat and headed for the Amazon lol. They also filmed either Dawn or Day of the Dead there back in the early 80's. Oh yeah, Elvis performed at the exhibition hall which used to stand at the west side of the Yacht Basin.
I fished that area last January on my vacation. Tons of species there
Definitely not an idiot as you said. We all learn at different times and sometimes very difficult ones or expensive ones, but yours is at least was caught with caution.
Great update Marty - some real good quality footage. Those electric windlasses make anchoring a breeze when on your own. Are you growing herbs in the pots on the stern?!! Looking forward to more - guessing Mike is heading off with Richie when he leaves. Stay safe & well. 👍👍
Marty, love the boating tips, especially about the drifting. Keep’em coming!
Just up the rivers about a mile or so is a great marina/bar if your going to be there for a few days. It’s at the next bridge north Rt. 31
Keep on keeping on!
Looks like a great place, some peace and solitude, pups can play, sure they feel all the stress.
I bet with hoist rigging, two weeks, "you" with your resourcefulness could have the motor ready to pop out in 5 min... Great videos. Can't help but share them.
Man this journey has inspired me for the future. I always wanted to see you go on adventure/camping on your boat always left a comment about it haha, the windows and fiberglass top went excellent solutions that me personally would have never thought of. Keep up the great work and safe Travels :)
Loving your videos.
Awesome voyage
railroad bridge is a well known snook spot
Our boy needs a nook spot. He seems top be in a dry spell.
ya there are a lot of fish there but our water is so dirty now it’s so sad i won’t eat anything i catch there
@@nicholasr1400 Are you on the Caloosahatchee? I wonder if there's any correlation to the dirty water and manatee sightings shrinking.
There's a ol sayin ya gotta take into account "Sometimes , Shit Just Happens" , Engine Troubles Was A Fluke Deal, Coulda happened at anytime and likely woulda eventually , just happened to be on this adventure, It's all good I'm sure the Stress of that was a bit much for ya ,but really all in all it hasn't changed the adventure of the Loop , Adapt and Overcome ,Step out on the bow and take a deep breath ,that's Freedom Your inhaling ,That inspired Many Who Explored The Unknowns and Uncharted For hundreds of years , Beyond Doubts There was busted Sails To mend for them as well as the engine issue for you now , but what your discovering along the way is worth it , The Sites The People ,The Experience Of It All ,That's the adventure of it , put the Raider to work ,Enjoy the pups ,catch some fish, make a dinner , have some rum, it's all good No Worries, ,
That offer is for lunch or dinner for both you and Marty. The Boathouse is an awesome restaurant right no the river with a pool! I can even come and get you in my 21' cuddy and bring you back afterwards. Let me know! I've been following you closely for some time now and I'm a fellow transplanted NYer!
Great Video - looking forward to the next
Thanks for sharing your vids
My old man worked for Florida Power and Light for 40 years. He lives over in LaBelle. You guys stop there I will have him bring you some beer. Enjoy your down time and exploring a new area.
Good way to start my Friday
Awesome man.
Good luck on your next leg of the trip
Great video!
That is the most fun is learning and finding out, exploring
you have inspired me. i went to look at a liveaboard this afternoon. matter of fact your'e going to pass right by it went you make your way by the New Smyrna Beach area. i live 2 minutes from waters edge. you need anything from Titusville thru Daytona ill do my best to help.
Marti will get an engine given off a follower who will probably fit it for the pleasure of his company for a couple of weeks. The other new friend who supplied the diesel probably gave him it, Marti asked, "how much am I putting in, 40 gallons haha" and the bloke said,"fill it up". They will make the loop and have the time of their lives, they deserve it, people can be selfless sometimes.
Stuff happens. Engines fail sometimes. It’s part of the journey. Enjoy your trip.
Not sure if you did, but it helps to slowly motor towards the anchor when pulling it up. You want to be over it so anchor releases and the winch doesn’t work as hard.
And a beautiful place for a break down
Idiots are who inspire me not to be an idiot. Good vid Marty, thanks! A quick bark out to Bay and Jabs!!
Hopefully you enjoyed Pine Island and St James City, we have a lot of fun there
I love your content
I have never seen bait buckets used as planters before.
Hey Marty,
I strongly recommend working on those trim tabs while the boat is on the hard. This way once you get the replacement motor you can get her up on plane. It seems like your running motor however is doing well. The only way I would reccomend changing both engines is if you get something other than mercruisers all together. Im sitting here trying to get over covid but I do thank you for the entertainment.
Get well soon
sheephead season is upon us give it a shot marty!
I wish we could get this 4k 60fps. I know its near impossible but it would be glorious!
Bro keep your head up about the engine failure it's not your fault by no means God bless and safe travels
Must be nice to be in the sunshine.
thanks Marty
Hey Marty, do either one of you have an AIS? I highly recommend one once you get onto a narrow waterway with a lot of commercial traffic. It’s nice to know what barges are coming around a tight bend in a river instead of them just popping up in front of you and then scrambling to get out of their way. Fair winds and tight lines!
_IF_ at some time in the future you upgrade your chartplotter you may find the paper layout easier to PLAN the next days leg. Figure out where your waypoints are on paper, transfer to the plotter and it can alert you when your next turn is coming up.
We live and we learn.
I drive those bridges everyday. I know that spot well. Welcome to Lee
You're in Alaska already ???? 😂 I'll show myself out.
I'm living it with ya...
Free is good! 🛥 🌉 🌅
I hope to one day make the great loop in my sailboat, though I know it'll have to be de-masted for much of the journey, if you can do it in a boat with one engine going about 6mph, I can do it in a sailboat with no sail and an outboard! :D
Depending on how tall your stick is, you _might_ be able to go all the way down the Mississippi to the gulf without de-masting after Chiraq. Pretty sure if you take the Tenn-Tom you'll have the mast down though. Note: Never done it, it's on my bucket-list so I've been doing a _LOT_ of research!
My first in depth intro to the great loop was "KatieandJessieonaboat". Two twenty somethings who did it on a Cal27. They demasted south of Chicago, had it shipped to Mobile & restepped for the rest of the journey till they got to the Erie canal. Demasted again for that stretch. It was in the blogging days before youtube was a thing. Excellent adventure.
Better then anything on tv!
Also, the closest Marina to you right now is Sweetwater Landing Marina and I use his mechanic who runs independently and I can put you in touch with the Marina and the mechanic if you'd like to discuss motor options.
Your no idiot Marty, when you guys get to De. Bay, anchor in Lewes Harbour and pelican to the ramp. I can take you guys for provisions and trash haul. We have plenty of bud light too!
Hey Marty you should not let your windless hold the boat. Use a snubber or at least tie off to a cleat if you aren’t doing this. Couldn’t tell from the video if you are doing this
I’m enjoying your trip 👍 what engines are in your boat, Ford - Chevy ?
You're in my neck of the woods now and it is definitely too blacking for Sheepshead at I-75. Hey, if you're still in the area, I'd love to buy you and Mike lunch at the Boathouse Restaurant today. It is a few miles up from where you are.
Marty these videos are amazing and they're just the beginning! If you need financial help with the engine im sure a few of us would be willing to chip in some how.
That’s the same anchor app I use 🤙🏼👍🏻
Download Navionics app on your phone. It has a few chart options. The "sonar chart" is recorded from users depth finders. It is nice to have 2 different charts to reference (main plotter vs navionics sonar). I often find anchorages on the sonar charts that the regular charts show as shallow water. But don't trust any chart 100% , ease your way in slow.
For overnight anchoring, do you have an additional mast light mounted atop your hard top visible for 360 degrees.
Looking forward to your visit to LI
Fort myers I use to live there.
Where does the water start to turn fresh on that river?
How much do you spend on gas in a boat like that? Thanks nice video.
Marty if your still around let a friend come and help ya out!
Also at least you have your dogs and Mike for this trip. I would imagine you would really have to be a loaner to do this on your own although there are many sailboaters that do it....hmm
Can we get a boat tour
Look in your settings on your Lowrance you should have an anchor alarm also.
Every Adventure requires a person to be idiotic....cause if they weren’t they would never agree to the adventure in the first place....LOL
Ever thought of dropping 2 anchors? I always see boats with 2 lines front and back or 2 in front
We all have the opportunity to learn from our mistakes.
Mike should be able to go into settings and change the depth settings to allow for the placement of his transducer
I don’t know if you saw my last post but you may be able to file an insurance claim for the engine. If the instructions for the remote oil filter kit said no clamps were necessary, they were obviously wrong. Therefore, it may be a covered loss. I’m a Certified Marine Investigator and handle these types of losses. Just trying to help.
Do you have your port shaft locked down? Not sure what’s transmissions you have in the boat but it can damage some units when the wheel is being turned by the current with no power. I’d hate to see you lose a trans also.
Boating is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared and expect to experience Murphy's Law at all times. Issues like yours can happen at 1 mile or 1000 miles. Take it from someone who owned a 34' Silverton Fly Bridge Convertible. The experience will be worth the stress and something most people never get to do. Calm water and Red Skies at night Captain.
on the great loop, what speed were you cruise on?
