One time, I actually went to the bank and got a money order, and got the order form all filled out, and almost mailed it, before something came up and i had to use the money order. But I spent 100s of hours shopping. Those catalogs were every bit as magical, if not more so, than shopping on the internet. I always ended up getting subwoofers when the super sales would roll through town once a year. @gregkrueger331

Hey Big D, would you consider making a video that shows us the difference in low frequency response vs driver size? Like what is the lowest usable frequency a 6.5” driver can do, vs an 8” a 10” a 12” and a 15”? Would be a fascinating video! Thanks!

The smaller the driver, the more power you need to feed it to compare to a larger driver's cone area. You'll also generally need to build an enclosure that's larger than manufacturer's recommendation to get comparable sub bass response. This (among other factors) makes overexcursion more of an issue.
Let's say you have one 12" driver, running at 500 watts or so. I don't know enough about the math to give specifics, but you'll have to run a good amount more power to an 8" or 6.5" with crazy x-max to get similar output.
I do like 10" drivers for not announcing your arrival to everyone within a half block of your location, relatively compact, and easily outperforming smaller drivers of a similar price point.

I recently tried running eight 6.5” woofers(not subwoofers) in infinite baffle in a Toyota Corolla. These woofers were super cheap at only $8 each. I took extra care to fully seal the trunk from the cabin, which I believe helped tremendously. They were all ran off of a JP8 wired to 2 ohms.
    How did they sound?
Well, even though they have an FS of 51 hz, they put out useable output down to 30 hz where they started dropping off, and GREATLY dropped off at 25 hz where excursion limits were very easy to hit.
Overall though they sounded pretty good without taking up any trunk space. Most people thought I had a pair of 10” subs in the trunk and were shocked when I showed what it actually was!

It all depends on how low you want to go. I ran 3 DD 6.5s (500 series, not the 1506) ported under the cargo floor of my SUV on the 5th channel of a DD 5.1500, the clarity was amazing and it got pretty loud but the basshead in me wanted just a little bit more low end so I built a sealed box for 2 DD SL600 shallow 12s. Both setups are totally hidden and don't use any cargo space, you can't see them but you can hear them. Every few months I switch between the two setups, I like the thought of 6.5 subs sounding that good but I also like the thought of fitting 12s in a super small space...good luck with your build.

About 4' tall, extremely efficient & sounded great. I think they were called Studio Monitor Phase VIII. They each had dual woofers, a horn, & twin tweeters in a 45° offset housing. I removed my spare tire from my Ford Taraus to save weight back inthe day. I had 6 12" subs in the trunk. It was a beast. It was a challenge to keep the glass in that car. I had to spend a day each month going around the car and tightening fastners that would rattle lose. Winshield wipers would jump up off the windshield. had to have beefier alternators and multiple batteries. Fastforward and 1 sealed box 12" woofer in the 4Runner is nice. If I am at a gas station putting in gas and I walk away from it it sounds like a live band playing in a bar across the street no rattleing no windows flexing, no wiper blades jumping up and down. Sounds great with bass, rock, country, pop. No need for extra batteries or 240-300A alternators etc....
I did not always listen to my menotrs but I have come around to their way of thinking. Today I never try to do with 2 speakers what I can do with 1 or 2. So no 32 speaker builds with 6 12" woofers and all the associated nonsense!
Learning to build a system that sounds good and has solid sound staging is just as important of a skill as learning how to max out SPL! Different skill set for sure but both are skill sets to have if you want to be able to design and build systems from car audio to home audio for any client! It is a total package and achieving the desired outcome that is a sign of true mastering!

they are very nice and would be good for someone needing something small, but cone area and power is still the king. I just found 4 old school Orion extreme 12s running all 4 in a sealed enclosure with 1200 watts gave me a 148 on the window. still have room in the trunk for groceries lol.

There is a true relation between the 12 inch size and the targeted sound a sub is used for. Not saying other sizes won't sound good but there are still compromises.

  • @nukedathlonman

Not sure why, but I've always been fond of 10" subs - nothing smaller, nothing bigger. But your quite right, smaller subs may just be the ticket one's after in terms of size/space and output needs.

FINALLY SOMEONE TELLING THE TRUTH! I run a test where I created using a MIDBASS, 4 inches and 70 watts, making a small case, I think it is from 5 x4,5 inches, and an DIY passive radiator with coins attacted to it. It can go low, and sounds decent. My 6 inch Samsung subwoofer OEM Stock from factory punches some insane bass, just doesnt go as low as I want. I dont get why people bother getting 14 inch subwoofers when 2 6"s would do the trick and maybe have even more bass and SPL than the huge 99999w subwoofers. Have a great day!

The ones you were testing. W/rap written across the cap just looks cheap in my opinion. But they seem to perform well. If they had a sale or something I'd be willing to try them out... But with the six and a half it seems like everybody's in the same price range between $1 and $120. If it didn't say rap across the front I'd be willing to give it more of a chance.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention Big D

One of the most important points you didn't mentioned is the stamped steel basket. That's SUPER important. People new into the audio industry like the looks of the cast baskets. They don't understand that those baskets ring like tuning forks and can cause SQ problems. Stamped steel doesn't resonate so, it's the best and honestly the strongest option. I hate that Savard makes their stuff in China. I wish they'd build in the US but, I get it. They have to stay competitive price wise. Regardless, they'll be in the high running for my new system.

I know a guy that did a bunch of 5" woofers as subs. It's a good idea to use what you got but the xmax of smaller drivers is much lower so they dont move as much air.

Back in the 90’s I had every Car Audio and Electronics magazine it seemed. I had some extravagant systems for the time from advertisements in magazines and research I did. I eventually added some AuraSound Bass Shakers to my systems and they added a lot of extra sensory bass that you can really feel. Had anyone used those? Maybe a review on them in addition to a system that has good frequency response to see what the hype was about. Boom!💥
