I built THIS in a PowerMac G4 case?!

  • I had the rare pleasure of buying a Powermac G4 Quicksilver case that had already been cut, leaving the door open for me to correct some of the metalwork and build my own machine inside it!
    Join me for a fun build after a long period of sore back, illness, and a construction company erecting a building across the street quite loudly.

    Be careful when tightening the screws on the handles. If you make it too tight they will crack. Even if it doesnt crack when you screw them it may when you lift it from the handke.

    This is awesome! I’m so happy to see cathode ray tubes in a PowerMac

    I'm doing a G4 and a G5 right now. Their power switches use the 27v rail that supports ADC power passthrough, if you want to keep its pulsing, glowing functionality you need to bring a 27v line in.

      I’m not sure what is next for this thing but I want to keep modding it in the least invasive way possible.

      I think a clear plastic grill would look awesome in the drive bay. The frosted feet looks really good with the case panels & blue cathode is SO nice :)

  • @GarthBeagle
    @GarthBeagle Před rokem +1

    It came out great! I think the feet actually compliment it pretty well, sort of a frosted effect, like ICED 😎
    I've washed lots of logic boards in the sink in hot soapy water, with a ton of rinsing, usually also a dunk/rinse in distilled water, and always blower the heck outta it with my air compressor, to get all the water outta the nooks and crannies. Then I put it out into the hot California sun to dry. Now I have a ultrasonic cleaner, I'm usually using it as it's much less labour intensive.

      Hahaha well thanks Garth. That’s good to hear but I think the handles just need more polish.
      As for the wash I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome! And thanks for the coffees!

    Nice PC hack-a-Mac conversion! The top left spot where the optical drive is normally located, actually requires a bracket and a couple of screws. So if you want the bracket and a couple of screws to mount an actual optical drive, let me know as I believe I would have a set for you.
    Also, your large plastic bracket that hinges your open/close mechanism, actually has one of the clips broken ie: the front one is intact and the rear one is broken/missing.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Před rokem

      I’m thinking I’m gna leave the optical out for now as I love the look of the fan. I might actually try to get a new plastic tray. The one I have is like Swiss cheese.

    I like the 2009 hp dv7s. One of the most beautiful laptops ever built in my opinion. I wonder how hard it woild be to swap the internals from a newer notebook into the case of the dv7

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Před 3 měsíci

      Neat project - I imagine it would be pretty difficult given how custom each laptop chassis tends to be for the hardware it came with. If you made a video of that, I'd watch it!

    • @askjeevescosby2928

      @CanadianComputerCollector but new hardware is alot smaller. Think of all the waste that could be pulled out.

    Did u partition and format SSD during XP installation? Or u did that externally beforehand. I learn from a PhilsComputerLab video "How to avoid short lifespan when using SSD in Retro PC", that it is better to partition and format ssd beforehand/externally using newer OSes before installing XP on it, for SSD longevity sake

Being a small channel sometimes I worry we can't deliver the same quality, but that isn't necessarily true, is it? Thanks a bunch for the suggestion and vote of confidence in my skills haha!

    First, I'm glad you recovered! Second, since it's a former Mac G4, why not try to make that PC hardware run a Mac OS? The basic ingredients are there, I think.

    IDK why you wouldn't just put the board in the fan forced oven at literally any temp over water boiling temp like 180c as it will all the water in there turn to steam, it will more reliably remove ANY water from the board better than you could ever blow dry it.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Před měsícem

      Howdy! I agree with you but I let the board sit for a long time and followed instructions I found online for how to effectively wash it. It was an experiment and a board I wasn’t overly concerned about. Worked out!
