Is South Africa a failed state?

- Corruption, murder for hire and a lack of accountability are some of the things that lead people to believe the country is becoming a failed state.
SA Institute of Political Affairs Chairperson, Moeletsi Mbeki shares his thoughts.
Tune into Newzroom Afrika DStv channel 405 for more.
South Africa is not a failed state, we just have a failed government that has been failing for 30 years. this country was carried by its people since 1994. the private sector and the people of south Africa have been holding it together since 1994. the is no government that made us. it was government corruption and incompetence that poked holes in our South African machine. if we can get rid of this incompetent and corrupt government, we will rebuild ourselves to our greatest potential.
History in Africa taught us that it wil just be another corrupt clan that will take over....
We are not yet a failed state but we are on the road to a failed state
"not a failed state"? If you ARE taking comfort in that, then you need to do a bit soul searching ! South Africa is now in FREE fall, hurtling towards failed status. I am saying, the process has already begun with NO signs that measures are being put in place to slow the process. That guy comparing Somalia to South Africa is a joke. Failed state status is a process, NOT an event and unfortunately, South Africa is on that road. Zimbabwe is a failed state and there is no civil war! Wake up South Africans !
Whether we are already a failed state or a country almost on the verge of becoming a failed state, what difference does it make. What is important is that we stop our countries continued degradation. Our opportunity arises in 2024. If we fail here than we deserve to live with what we got.
I hear you chief but the private sector is also the problem, particularly the financial sector. Finance is such a large part of the GDP and that hampers our growth. A developing country needs manufacturing and a low cost economy but ours is high cost that allows Finance to wield power. A huge mistake. Have a balanced view of things.
The ANC was given more than enough time but the government failed dismally. 😂😂😂
@DiNa Seketaba. It is the ANC who will regret misusing the ori ilege it was given to serve SA. It betrayed SA. No the ANC won't be missed.
@@nondumisokunene9279 ANC is useless is leaderless
If the ANC was running the country well and everything is under control and working i will be the first in line to vote for them but as you were saying they failed dismally 😜🤪😝

Mr Moeletsi Mbeki you are absolutely right. Gwede Mantashe has lost touch with reality.
Mbalula and Gwede's arrogance will be the death of ANC
Failed completely. For 30 yrs. Very well said 😅
No one in government takes accountability, so yes it's failed.
What a pleasure listening too a person who knows what he’ talking about👍
The last 30 years of the ANC rule was just time wasted and made more people poor and devistated and so sad. The ANC made South Africa a unsafe place to live in.

The Anc has broken this country and in my opinion this country will never be able to get back on its feet again .....
The problem in South Africa is denial.... that South Africa is not different from other African countries. Sub Saharan Africa will tell you how they were failed dismally by former liberation struggle parties. Zimbabwe, Zambia Malawi, etc. All these countries were victims of clueless leadership, mismanagement, embezzlement, Fraud and corruption, let alone looting.
10x10
All these countries did what ANC is doing now
I am very impressed with this man. He speaks the truth. The ANC failed the people . Manatshe is talking rubbish. The present govt. Didn't learn from the other African countries. I love listening to this man. He doesn't shy away from the truth. Bless you mr Mbeki.
How did the ANC fail though? I hear lots of complaining, but no one is pointing to anything in specific. It sounds like just a bunch of Gen Z'ers complaining since they weren't when Mandela was President.

If the ANC isn't failing its people then what's the cause of our country's problems Mr Einstein ?
@@Mad_scientist_ha_ha_ha It's the people failing the ANC. Tell me how you can be the majority, but White people are still richer and have significant power?
@@TheRealBillBob if you knew our country's history you wouldn't ask such a question
The ANC had 1 job which was bridge the division between the rich and the poor, it's the government's job to maintain the country, funds that should be used for the country and help the poor instead ends up in their pockets
As I'm talking rn there's no water at home an ongoing problem in our municipality and with the mayor having so many cases of corruption
You can't blame a person for not having a job even tho s/he has a bachelors degree at home, heck even graduate doctors are having trouble with finding jobs, and you want to blame the people ?
Come live in SA and talk once you know the state of living here
Half of those households are electricified illegally and not paying for it 🙄
Only if you can give them money to pay for electricity, it will be much appreciated, coz it seems like you block your ears when it is said there's high unemployment rate than ever before. It is the comfort zone(which you're at right now that makes you have such opinion) which will be a misery to you or your next generation that will be competing with the children of those unemployed individuals whom you think they should pay from nothingness!
@@picassocube3521 gosh, CZcams doesn't let me write the essay it would take to explain to you how wrong you are.
I am part of a charity that gives blankets and food to people living in the street every year before winter. Those people are hungry and cold.
The people connecting electricity illegally don't need my help. They've bought land and houses in the rural areas intentionally because they don't have to pay rates, or for water or for electricity. They have a house and more than a grant. (which I have a problem with too by the way).
No body should get anything for nothing in return. You want bread, pay for it. Someone took time, effort and material paid for to make it. So pay them what it's worth.
As soon as we get into the habit of giving something for nothing, then everything is worth nothing. And if everything is worth nothing, then no one will make it anymore. So they will stop.
This is a very scary road you go down my friend.
Which is part of why ESKOM is failing. No business can run without income.

The ANC have not failed, they have just found 10 000 ways of doing things the wrong way
That is fail
Very wise & important analysis that all opposition parties should take note of
We do not have a ANC problem, we have a majority of the electorate problem. The ANC didn't put themselves there, what you are seeing is damocracy in action. The majority of South Africans want to see the decay they do. With great power comes great responsibility.
That`s the core of the problem: ignorance of cause and effect.
well said actually.... it's really sad.
I'd like to thank you for offering us the privilege of listening to Mr Moeletsi Mbeki. He has wisdom not often brought to bear in South Africa today. I realise that literature is not a benchmark for political debate. It has within it wisdom of time. I use it because South Africa doesn't have many objective, untainted and unbiased benchmarks to use. I put forth this scenario. Read Cry the Beloved Country written by Alan Paton in 1948. Then go back to 1948 in the parallel history of South Korea. Compare where South Africa is today vs South Korea. Which can be assessed as a failed state? Decide for yourselves.
Why cant we get leaders like this in SA. Well said dude.
Its simple...because talk is cheap....
They all talk too much until they seat there in the throne....tht mouth will be busy chewing ching ching no more talking

Failed state is very very close, caused by a failing government who still think that they are doing just fine, and that we the citizens are the crazy ones.😂😂😂😂
When you live in a functioning country, please believe me, in comparison SA is a failed state. What is happening in SA is shocking. What country is going to allow Zama Zamas to carry on the way they do at the mines.
@shanaazcloete8531 a failed state in the dictionary, says when a government is no longer in control,so you are spot on,sa is 100% a failed state as per dictionary description.
Hoera finally somebody that sees it all as it is. Mr Moeletsi Mbeki, I salute your honesty and clearly showing how the ANC has failed the citizens of SA. They have robbed so many young South Africans of a future thru their corrupt and self centered actions. Yes the ANC failed so when will the Populis see the trees for their wood, and choose a party to look past the past and too the future for us all to prosper and grow...
DA must lead the government.
No doubt!!! It's there for all to see. No longer ahead, it's here! The people have given the ANC 30 yrs and now know it aint going to get better!!!
Accountability went out the window when Winnie was given a slap on the wrist and paid a measly fine for being implicated in at least 28 deaths and disappearances again thanks to Mandela , she should have been put in prison for 5 years as found by the TRC but she got off scot free ....lawlessness started right there .........but we name towns and buildings after her shameful
Did the ANC not know that infrastructure had to be maintained according to need and expansion had to be planned years in advance ......if we unite we can safe our country...devided we fall....
Problem is that everyone wants to be in charge, that's why we have so many political parry instead of 2 strong opposition parties
The fok?
Two party systems are horrible.
Get rid of the criminal kabal anc then we can see
He forgot to mention the number of power stations that were mothballed post 1994 and were never looked after, so could not be recommissioned to help with the power supply.
The mothballed ones (Komati, Grootvlei and Camden) were all restarted- the power stations built by the ANC like Medupi and Kusile are barely operating due to engineering failures and corrupted tenders.
And Medupi just broke down again.
They've never planned ahead taking into consideration the population growth that will need additional infrastructure. They will need electricity, water, sewage systems, schools, universities, health care facilities, roads, transport etc which the ANC never upgraded to cater for the growth. They ate that money which was budgeted for infrastructure. Now we losing businesses that used to contribute towards vat which reduce the income from sars and that's why we running out of funds.
AMEN ON THE FAILED ANC
Yes!!! Thanks to the anc, we are in the mess we are in today!!!
90% are electrified 50% of the time. It is a failure
Yes for 30years
The ANC put us into this position in the first place!!!!!
Question: How long is it going to take to realise the next elected government may do the same? Maybe appointed governing officials should be hold accountable and acted against if corrupt and incompetence continues? Before crime is not acted against severely in all sectors and at all levels, nothing will change.

ANC made one mistake. Placing too much focus on lifting the middle and lower classes out of poverty on that revenue base they didn't fortify and grow over time. Any smart government would've focused more on growing it's revenue through favourable capital policy for potential investors and also expanding the efficiency and scope of its SOEs. Naturally, the poor would've gotten employment and access to quality public service from basic interventions. You cannot continue to sustain the needs of 30 million poor people on a dwinling pool of government revenue.
Well said. With an army of experts, the ANC didn't and wouldn't heed any such advice.
You have made a valuable point.
Phalaphala is what Gwede is referring to as a success 😢
The topic was about whether South Africa has become a failed state or not, but I knew that Xoli Mngambi will insert the question around the Putin arrest, if he comes to South Africa, our journalists are like a frog in which something is talking inside it.

The only reason SA is at all functional is that it started its slide from a very high point. For example having excellent roads, rail an one of the best electricity supplies in the world.
SA 8s not a developing country. It is going backwards.

I personally disagree with the statement that South Africa is a failed state. South Africa will be a failed state the day EFF gets into power, if you want to know why, check the state of Zimbabwe and other countries in Africa now. chasing way skilled people and taking the land was a big mistate, and that's what EFF believes in. you ask yourself what is Zimbabwe doing with the land now? nothing because they lack skills. and whilst ANC government is trying to sort out the issue of illegal and undocumented foreign nationals in the country, however EFF seems to be against of what the ANC led government is doing. Once EFF gets into power, South Africa will automatically be a failed state watch my words. South Africans wake up!!!
You listen to too much propaganda. You have a fragile brain to comprehend what Chris Hani advocated for and that's what EFF is currently advocating for

When the government becomes irrelevant in the lives of the people, and the people become irrelevant to the powers that be, the state has failed. States do not fail suddenly but once it is beyond reversing the state has failed. It may take many years to become manifest, depending on the resilience of the people, but the state has failed.
With us around it must not become a failed state we will keep together what needs to be kept together , build together , fight against crime together , in contrast to breaking down and running away from criminals and poverty
As sad as it is to think. Maybe the South African economy was better off during apartheid
""There are no pirates in South Africa..." There certainly are! What would you call Zuma and his buddies? Yes, those pirates stole the state! The ANC not only "mismanaged" the SOEs, and the economy, they have destroyed them. Eskom, SA Railways, SAA, the infrastructure was all there... now, but vestiges remain. A few hours of electricity per day, a few Airbuses, a lonely train here and there. A failed state does not only mean pirates off the coast Mr Mbeki.
Yes, just 5 years and South Africa is gone.

Like countries in the sub Saharan Region South Africa has reached the 30th year . i can tell you that she is about to graduate. You must remember that it takes 30- 40 years for most of these African countries to change a govt soon after independence. The problem is Political Education in Africa.
Romans 8:28
God uses for good what was meant for evil.
SA was meant to fail.
Therefore all painful devious concoctions meant to make her a failed state WILL FAIL DISMALLY in the end with consumerate, negative consequences for the pundits responsible. Global history bears testimony to this. Which country failed eternally by devious man's plans? None.
The earth n everything in it belongs to God n it is thus His supreme, sovereign plan that prevails in the end, not man's.
I pray that all SAns live long enough to see God's redemptive, righteous plan unfold in their lifetime.

Let's compare South Africa to South Korea. South Korea became an independent republic in 1948. Prior to 1948, it was decimated by external governments. 75 years on, it is an international first-world country with a successful economy. South Africa became a country with majority rule in 1994. Prior to 1994, it was a successful first-world country. 29 years on, it is a failed state that cannot keep the lights on, is losing jobs at a rate of knots, the Rand is in the toilet, and businesses are closing rapidly. Would someone please explain the difference, unless it is a government that has brought the country it its knees? In this, no party is exempt. Factors, I would suggest that have achieved this is rampant corruption, non-delivery, incompetence, indifference and inertia. It's been happening for at least two decades now. No one stopped it. Why not?
