South Africa is not a failed state, we just have a failed government that has been failing for 30 years. this country was carried by its people since 1994. the private sector and the people of south Africa have been holding it together since 1994. the is no government that made us. it was government corruption and incompetence that poked holes in our South African machine. if we can get rid of this incompetent and corrupt government, we will rebuild ourselves to our greatest potential.

"not a failed state"? If you ARE taking comfort in that, then you need to do a bit soul searching ! South Africa is now in FREE fall, hurtling towards failed status. I am saying, the process has already begun with NO signs that measures are being put in place to slow the process. That guy comparing Somalia to South Africa is a joke. Failed state status is a process, NOT an event and unfortunately, South Africa is on that road. Zimbabwe is a failed state and there is no civil war! Wake up South Africans !

Whether we are already a failed state or a country almost on the verge of becoming a failed state, what difference does it make. What is important is that we stop our countries continued degradation. Our opportunity arises in 2024. If we fail here than we deserve to live with what we got.

I hear you chief but the private sector is also the problem, particularly the financial sector. Finance is such a large part of the GDP and that hampers our growth. A developing country needs manufacturing and a low cost economy but ours is high cost that allows Finance to wield power. A huge mistake. Have a balanced view of things.

I realise that literature is not a benchmark for political debate. It has within it wisdom of time. I use it because South Africa doesn't have many objective, untainted and unbiased benchmarks to use. I put forth this scenario. Read Cry the Beloved Country written by Alan Paton in 1948. Then go back to 1948 in the parallel history of South Korea. Compare where South Africa is today vs South Korea. Which can be assessed as a failed state? Decide for yourselves.

Any smart government would've focused more on growing it's revenue through favourable capital policy for potential investors and also expanding the efficiency and scope of its SOEs. When the government becomes irrelevant in the lives of the people, and the people become irrelevant to the powers that be, the state has failed. A few hours of electricity per day, a few Airbuses, a lonely train here and there. A failed state does not only mean pirates off the coast Mr Mbeki.

    Romans 8:28
God uses for good what was meant for evil.
    SA was meant to fail.
Therefore all painful devious concoctions meant to make her a failed state WILL FAIL DISMALLY in the end with consumerate, negative consequences for the pundits responsible. Global history bears testimony to this. Which country failed eternally by devious man's plans? None.
The earth n everything in it belongs to God n it is thus His supreme, sovereign plan that prevails in the end, not man's.
I pray that all SAns live long enough to see God's redemptive, righteous plan unfold in their lifetime.

Let's compare South Africa to South Korea. South Korea became an independent republic in 1948. Prior to 1948, it was decimated by external governments. 75 years on, it is an international first-world country with a successful economy. South Africa became a country with majority rule in 1994. Prior to 1994, it was a successful first-world country. 29 years on, it is a failed state that cannot keep the lights on, is losing jobs at a rate of knots, the Rand is in the toilet, and businesses are closing rapidly. Would someone please explain the difference, unless it is a government that has brought the country it its knees? In this, no party is exempt. Factors, I would suggest that have achieved this is rampant corruption, non-delivery, incompetence, indifference and inertia. It's been happening for at least two decades now. No one stopped it. Why not?

I agree with you sir...S Africa is going down. Gwede is also right about the electricity BUT it is easy to use an existing working system and just ad new lines . Again ,even the police can't manage crime in SA... another section of ANC government that is failing SA!
