    Boys today I shot a 78 by following the way of the playa. I have never broken 80 before but today everything just clicked. I finished 18 by sticking a shot onto an island green from 180 into the wind. I put the ball to 3 feet, it was the best shot I have ever hit to cap off my best round ever. I feel like a million dollars today and wanted to share some good golf news with a community that can understand what this means to me. Keep fighting playas

    I'm 60 years old with a 6 Index and 4 handicap at my home course. My ability to shoot consistently in the 70's is based on my strategy to always play within my skill level. Stop watching and thinking you can hit the shots you see on the PGA, because you can't. I can't tell you how many guys I play golf with will try and hit a 9 iron 170 yards because they saw Rory do it last week. I hit my 9 iron 120-130. I can throw darts at the pin because I follow one simple rule..."Let the club do the work"
    Stop overswinging and play within your skill level and develop a smooth tempo. it'll make a huge difference.

    @llamabahama4654 Před 10 měsíci +7

    Definitely worth the watch but I also jotted the cliffnotes down as well. I enjoyed watching his round while giving these tips and this seems like a long form commercial for those towels:
    1. Having a "Go to" tee club, even if it's not driver; so a club you know you won't miss with and can always count on
    2. 1 Shot shape and stick with it (can make other shot shapes if required)
    3. play a lot (on course or off i.e. productive range time with focus on short game)
    4. know expectations of a scratch golfer (8/10 on the green from 120yds, avg within 18ft for pros); shoot for perfection knowing it's unattainable and living with the results
    5. Superb distance control; focusing on approach shots but also with putting (pick a line then solely concentrate on distance control, removing variables)
    6. Need to be able to reliably hit a driver as scratch will play from back tees and par 5's should be looked at as birdie opps; hit the driver well to have shorter irons in, more manageable yardage attacking par 5's
    7. Do not use shots on the course that you haven't worked/practiced on for quite a while before; comfortable hitting any shot you use or might use
    in a real round; play to your strengths and/or get your weaknesses good enough to avoid destroying your card.
    8. Got over your shot quickly, once done you move on to focus on the very next shot you have to play; scratch players like to walk as they start assessing the lie and the next shot asap; forget what just happened focus on executing this current shot.
    9. Love data but not solely on strokes gained/lost; what clubs hitting, not hitting, distance with those clubs then use this info to adapt their bag and what clubs they are carrying into battle (e.g. find you aren't using a club, replace it with something else more useful, or two clubs hitting very similar distances, take one out and again bring something in more useful)
    10. Truly understanding how the club and ball interact with all conditions (lie, slope, wind, temp, etc.); understand how club and ball reacts to lie and landing conditions and adapt swing to that. not copy paste distances for each club

    This is the absolute best advise. Priceless advise! My experience in golf was very deep, for a very long time. Personal lessons once a week from middle school into college. Summers at David Ledbetter Academy in Bradenton. AJGA, NJGA, All the JGA’s….if it was not for the ol’ back issues - who knows. But your advise is spot friggin on. 16 years of maybe a random scramble and finally getting my back issues sorted, and i started playing again this summer (found your videos because i wanted to see Hogans backswing) and i have not lost many strokes from when i was ranked. And everything you said is exactly why. You said what i cannot explain. And perhaps for conversation, or some may find my opinions interesting - A few other items that i like to add - never worry about how you are hitting (in the aggregate) on the range. The range is for working on just fundamentals - that is all. The range is flat - and golf courses are not. On the course your hitting every 10 min and all kinds of shots back to back over extended time - not fire off bombs every 20 seconds. Also - For every one hour on the range, four hours working on 120 yards and in. (If i am within 120 yards, i expect to get up and in. If i am outside of 15’-20’ from the hole - i expect a two putt and that’s perfectly fine every time). Also - on the golf course, during scoring rounds, i will never hit a golf shot i have not hit EXTREMELY SUCCESSFULLY ON A GOLF COURSE before; never think of a driving range shot as a successful shot. It’s like..maste^&tion. Anyways - play a ton a ton a ton a ton of golf shots on a golf course. Play by yourself, and just hit shots that you could see hitting during a scoring round; don’t play around or waist time with stupid shot scenarios. Like seeing if you can snap hook around the trees. If you have the fundamentals of hitting a snap hook. You can hit a snap hook - id go spend my time by throwing a few balls at various “misses” in the fairway - so i am practicing a more likely scenario i would face during a scoring round. And do that every time you have a chance. And this is going to sound weird - do not practice putting outside fundamentals and distance. It gets you thinking you suck, because most putts do not go in and most golfers do not realize how much “rub of the green” outside 5’ you have. Focus on your fundamentals, constant feedback and contact and then its just tempo to match the distance - most do not go in; two putts are fine every-time outside 15’-20’. Last thing on putting - once you understand distance, you will understand how to read a green. So don’t worry about the break until you know how to control the break with tempo to match the distance.

Had the most fun I’ve had playing golf in years. No lost ball. No stress. Just enjoyable shots. And by the end, my 7iron off the tee was a thing of beauty. Grooved that thing in. I finally found a CZcamsr/golfer who can play at high level and so glad to see this clip cos I've been watching hundreds of videos on how to improve my own game to shoot in the 70s consistently but most of the time it's mainly to help players to break 100s and 90s. It's amazing to hear how flush the ball came off your clubface and that's what I love playing with scratch golfers. Plus they don't usually get mad or upset when they miss hit their shots. By the way, you played pretty darn well today and your putter was on fire 🔥 😁😊 👍 👍 Thanks for sharing your playing strategies!

    As a sub 4 hdcp that has been at scratch twice I agree with everything here. Especially with brushing off a bad shot and just concentrating on the next. I don't look at it as a bad shot but rather an opportunity to make a great shot.
    Also at 10:10, "always go left here" might be the striping from the mower. The striping points left, right where your ball went. Sometimes things like that get in your head and you don't even realize it. There's a local course I play where the tee box doesn't line up with the fairway. The tee box kind of aims at the left edge the area of play and the markers are centered to the tee box and not the fairway so if you line up perpendicular to the markers you're pointed at the edge of OB and I see SO MANY people hit the ball left off that tee. Even if you line up right down the middle of the fairway it feels like you're aiming right and that can mess with your head. Just a thought.

    Skratch golfer here I’ll react and write as we go let’s see lol
    #1 A higher lofted go to tee club ✅ it’s 5 iron for me, I know it’s gonna be 220 and in the fairway 95% of the time for dangerous holes.
    #2 Play to only 1 shot shape ❓Neutral on this one. I do know every shot which direction is more OK to miss, and swing accordingly to either go straight, or miss in that direction if anything.
    #3 They play / practice a lot ✅ This is true. You can’t maintain scratch if your short game and approaches aren’t dialed in consistently and often.
    #4 Their goal is green 8/10 times from 125. ✅ This is true, I’m usually around 75% from that range.
    #5 Supurb distance control ✅ Yep, is why you have to play a lot. To have a feel down to the yard how far certain swings go.
    #6 Par 5s are birdie holes ✅ Yep but that’s an obvious one.
    #7 Only do shots you’ve already practiced ❓hm not really. Scratch golfers can adapt. Specialized shaped punch shots, flop shots, etc.

    Solid round! Super cool to see a -3 nine on you! When the zone is open it's open!!
    A couple other tips that scratch players do:
    1) scratch players literally are unaware of their playing partners. They do but also don't notice their shots, swings, or even their scores. They don't care
    2) scratch players like to play with people who motivate them to try. Or when playing with lesser players put themselves into zones to get them hostile and ready to attack.

    • @GolfSidekick
      @GolfSidekick  Před 10 měsíci +6

      I think most of us need to play with a variety of playing partners. Especially high handicap golfers so they can see how to play better golf

      i really enjoy playing with high handicap players in stablefords (because they can wash a hole and i don't feel bad not helping them look for a ball) Sure you want to play better than everyone you play with .... but absolutely smoking a high handicap for some weird reason makes me really enjoy a round. Also you can actually have a conversation with them to distract you through parts of the round.

    Been following for a long time, last season your strategies helped me break 100. I am having some self worth issues with the next goal of 90 and eventually 80. What advice would you give a golfer who's longest iron (5) goes 140. To compound it, my 6 goes 140 and my 7 goes 130. And then a normal 10 yd distance appears after that. I haven't lost a ball in 10 rounds, but I am no where near green in reg and my 150 club is a 4h that has such a wide dispersion because it's a longer club that I can't land it on the green. I work out regularly but it doesn't translate to the game, and I spend my 2 days I get to practice a week on the short game. The grind has been quite discouraging and I don't have the luxury to be able to afford lessons. Just recently tried swingtweaks and my swing exploded because the second I started working on it I couldn't get my swing to not be tense and just shot in the 100s again and feeling like I regressed. I need guidance great teacher.

    I am blessed to be able to hit a consistent 5 yard draw with a 3 wood about 280 off the tee. This allows a wedge into most par 4s with minimal risk off the tee. Its a misconception by most players that distance is only a benifit when pounding driver. Its the ability to hit shorter clubs off the tee and giving yourself more chances to control the ball going into the greens.

  • @blazedell7561

    I’ve been a 6 handicap for years, but lately I’m shooting for par every round (even breaking it!) I’ve devoted most practice into developing extreme confidence with the putter, as this has happened the rest of my game has just been let free…Knowing I can actually have confidence over birdie putts has really let me play to win instead of preserve. I used to overthink the rounds where I would go off the front even or 1 or 2 under, which always let to let downs on the back nine. Well things are changing…I shot my personal best 66 last Thursday, I was roping irons at pins with extreme distance control and putts were falling. When you start to correct your glaring weaknesses, you can go low! Believe it!

    I've given up the driver and just hit a 2 iron off the tee, I don't hit the ball very far but I can get it in play a lot and then hit a 7 iron and hopefully a pitching wedge for the green but the problem is then all the 3+ putts. At the moment I play with: 2 iron, 4 iron (necessary for some par 3s with houses and club house behind them) 7 iron, 9 iron, 46 degree and 56 degree for the bunkers and my putter. It's a lighter carry around the course too which is nice

      Last weekend I used the driver on the first two holes then put it away for the rest of the game. I was using either my 3 woods or 6 iron of most of the tees the rest of the way. After the first couple of holes using my 3 wood by buddy I was golfing with told me I should just leave the driver home as I was hitting my 3 wood further than he was his driver and I was pretty accurate with it.

    I'm currently a 3.4. 73 is my personal best and I've hit it a handful of times, but I seem to struggle to stay under par when I get there. I just can't seem to find the right balance between aggressiveness and safe shots, eventually make a couple bogeys and never hit the goal. I've really thrived with the 6-6-6 system (for my game, it's 9 GIRs and 3 up and downs that I target) getting my mindset right for getting to under 80, but need something similar to guide me to sub 72.

    • @countryboy8870
      @countryboy8870 Před 8 měsíci

      keep fighting it buddy, sometimes those brick walls are hard to belt through. You're clearly good enough ... mental game is real though. First time i got through 70 was ok, but man the second time took me about 6 months with the pressure i was putting on myself, after the 2nd time though you're set. We know you want it ... but you have to keep that pressure off somehow.
      Have you tried a good mate (a sensible one) as a caddie that can keep reminding you to not do stupid shit? My son will caddie a bit and the most common thing he says is "you're going to do what ... are you insane ... use your head" with way more colourful language. Just helps a couple of shots a round when you go to chase a sucker pin or fly something with no benefit or considering a shot and short-siding yourself.
      Get there man, you can do it.

      @@countryboy8870 my friends are either not good enough to know how to caddie or talk too much **** and goad me into the wrong decision at times. It's fun, but I tend to play better with acquaintances than friends that I could ask for support like that. Still, I'm down to 2.4 now so feel like it's a matter of time.
