  • In this episode we REACT to the oldest scotch we've had on our show - the 32 year old offering from the legendary brand, Dewar's. Things get a little crazy towards the end of the reaction as we go through our collection trying to find something comparable.

I hadn't really thought about it until seeing this video, but it seems that blends can make for a good way to access and try very old scotches without paying the truly ridiculous, over-the-top prices you see for single malts at a similar age.

I bought this 32 year because of the age, as that was how many years at my company when I retired. I couldn’t find another 32 year at a reasonable price point (even with the half bottle to full bottle factor). I also could only find one other review(Fred’s). I did a video on the story behind getting it and what else I had for my retirement, posted 11/4. You guys got better(more detailed for sure) notes and flavors, but I have a hard time pulling them out. I do better comparing, which you did, and I’ll try eventually. Thanks for not making me feel like I got had by the effective price just for the sake of 32 years. Cheers!

Crazy impromptu drink through. For an "academic" exercise, it would be interesting to see you put the Dewar's 32 against an Aberfeldy 16 Yr, let alone the 21 Yr. I believe it is the primary Single Malt note in the Dewars blend. It would be great to see the pure malt against the blend (if an older blend would beat out the pure malt at a younger age). Or you could go Dewar's Double Double 21 v. Aberfeldy 21 and take age out of the equation entirely. This might be a better test of scotch snobs.

I understand enjoying the uniqueness of single barrel or single malt offerings, but I think all of us have been disappointed by them at one time or another as well, so I don't get the segment that hates so much on blended whiskey. I'd rather have something that has been created to deliver the best experience that the distiller can offer, than spend my limited funds on something that I have to cover with cola to be willing to drink. At the price of that Dewars, I think I'd prefer a blended whiskey.
Then again, I'm kind of poor and fairly inexperienced with whiskey. If I was Mr. Dillon (RIP), I might feel differently.

Loved this episode guys and I couldn’t agree with you more when it comes to the myth that blends are completely inferior to single malts. Although my bar is mostly comprised of single malts, the possibilities with blends are endless. The primary reason that whisky enthusiasts sneer at blends has more to do with the perception of the endless flood of poor quality blends lining the bottom shelves. There are some truly amazing blends out there, although the quality to price ratio is usually skewed. Johnnie Walker Green Label is an excellent example of a reasonably priced quality blend, however, I live in a controlled state that doesn’t stock it. 30 and 40 year old single malts? We’ve got ‘em. JW Green? We’re SOL. Go figure!🙄
