in Romania I tip 2-3$ (which is a fair amount for Romania, true, but not an outrageous one) when I like the service and the girl is sweet, haha. but I will never go for that 10% 15%. A tip is a tip, not shares in a company

@@valeriewright8686 that is because it is expected in the US. Tip less if the service is bad. But always tip your restaurant server in the US. If the service is so bad it is not worth of any tip, you should complain to the restaurant manager. I do agree that tipping has gotten out of hand here in the US, but at a traditional restaurant a tip is expected unless the service is poor. Some servers make less than minimum wage because tipping is taken into account.

Yeah it's definitely different here. I've never tipped here in Australia. Never felt the need too. I mean if people want to they can. At least they have the choice. For me if I feel I've received exceptional service I will let the Manager of the establishment know. Sadly I haven't had to do that many times though. I just hope tipping/service charges don't make their way here to Australia. I feel like we already pay enough.

Delis are more noted for sandwiches, steakhouses for proper steak. But a deli is a good start, though I would have gone for a Reuban. Also you should try a proper Italian restaurant as well as a pizza joint. You only need to tip for a served meal,a sit down or carhop. You do not have to tip if the service or food is poor. They will certainly try to get money out of you,it's New York.Just remember as my dad always said:"My money is green anyplace" and do not be bullied.

    D.J.
OK....let me get this out of the way....yes, the U.S. has a tipping culture.
For table service, we are expected to tip, as the the waitstaff relies on such tips for their livelihood.
However, you should never...repeat...NEVER be expected to tip for a bottle of water. NEVER.
That's a NYC establishment preying on unknowing tourists.
Conversely, when we've visited Ireland and Scotland, the tipping culture with which I grew up sticks...
and even though I've been told tipping isn't expected in the UK, I still drop at least 10% on the table.
That's how I've been conditioned, growing up in the U.S.
But still....in the U.S., tipping is never expected for simple shop purchases...only for table service.
NYC is pretty expensive as it is. I hope you enjoy your visit. Please make sure you get some real NY pizza at
Lombardi's in Little Italy or Juliana's in Brooklyn, and some soup dumplings in Chinatown at Joe's Shanghai.
NYC has much better to offer than a simple steak or hotdogs.

DJ, when you come to NYC, you should go to the classic places, not these random hole in the walls. That steak you ate is nothing like the kind of steak you would get at one of the classic New York Steak houses. Go to Keens steakhouse for the best steak and get ribeye not New York Strip or Fillet. Ribeye has the best flavor because of the bone and fat content. Go to Brennan and Carr in Brooklyn for Roast Beef Sandwich, go to John's of Bleeker for possibly the best pizza in the world, better than Italy. Go to Blondies for the best chicken wings and waffle fries. Go to Serendipity for the best Ice Cream desserts. Go to Shu Jiao Fu Zhou for the best Chinese food. Go to Second Avenue Deli for the best classic Kosher Deli. Go to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and pick just about any Italian restaurant and you will be happy with your pick. Then there are a dozens of great ethnic neighborhoods where you can find just about any ethnic cuisine you could think of.

I think you hit the nail on the head that the prices in the US are now extortionate. The US used to be huge portions and be cheap but now its much smaller portions and double if not triple the price. As much as I love the US, as you said, those prices have definitely put me off. When you add on tax and tip as well its sheer craziness. Now if the quality of food was outstanding it might not be as bad but when you're getting ok'ish food you definitely don't see the value. Don't worry Australia isn't as bad as that. Like in the UK the taxes are included in the price so the price is the price. We also don't tip so if you ever did visit the land of Oz you'd be ok. I know I may have scared you a bit but Australia is definitely nowhere near as expensive as the US. 😁👍🏼

I go to Vegas regularly, and those machines are everywere when you pay, and if I pay cash I'll give a dollar or so on my coffee or snacks at the shops. I tip properly at service restaurants, and the like.

LOL DJ I thought I was Thurd. Enjoying your Apple Adventures. Exchange rate is great for UK tourists now as close to 1.30. Personally its the Airport queues at immigration that has put me off USA for more than 10 years.

Several clients have been to New York recently, and they all say the same thing: everything is expensive and lower in quality than it used to be. Try self-service checkouts, I've been told they ask for a tip as well, even though no one has done anything apart from you!

If that really was a NY strip, they must have butterflied it because it far too wide. Oh, and DJ the NY strip is sirloin. Either way it wasn't a top quality piece of meat.

If you want to get a better steak Darren, try Gallagher's or Keens. I normally tip around 20%, if you want to get water, go to a 7eleven or bodega

In the US, tipping is usually 15%. unless you choose to tip higher. You have to remember that servers in the United States right now do not make more than a few dollars an hour in salary so tips adds to their salary. You do not have to tip 20%. They just push it on you and suggested it is up to you. 😊

Canada has gone the same way. The tipping culture is OUT of control. My UK relatives complain about the UK cost of living, but you should try living in North America since COVID.

They say the tip helps with a low wage they get, that's the problem with America blame everybody else, don't make the customer the donkey, meal was so expensive, not for any bucket, good video DJ 👍

What you failed to mention regarding the tipping is, when they hand over the machine with the tipping amount given as a percentage ,ie. 18% 20% 25% they add this amount to the cost of the meal + tax. So you are effectively tipping on the tax amount as well. this gives them a sneaky boost to the tip.

This is one of the things i miss about NYC, looks great - Watching these videos, it surprises me how food prises have increased and portion sizes have decreased over the years! Guess the average wages are a lot higher over there - The tip system is insane and a way of ripping of tourists?

I've never had to tip for buying a bottle of water (or anything) in a store in New York. Ever. Maybe it's because you're in a tourist area and the store is trying to fleece customers, I don't really know. Also, for only $3, it would have been easier just to pay cash. A lot of businesses in New York either have a minimum amount to use a card or add on a surcharge as they get charged by the credit card companies so they lose money with every transaction.

Used to find that when dining in NYC. Your total bill would come to $300 and they would expect a 20% tip bringing the bill up to $360 i used to find that a bit hard to swallow. I even had a waitress in a place called the stage door deli informing me how to tip which I already knew, she told me what the tip should be and i said shame that i was going to leave you more but i will go with your recommendation. She was a bit unhappy with that. Anyway have a great time and stay safe 👍

Steak looked good. $40?....not bad considering. Tipping for a bottle of water?.......Are they mad!!!. In Ireland we pay about 23% VAT on meals. We are not obliged to tip, but it I life the service, I'll leave 10% tip on top.
