    for car bodywork, it is really helpful to be using magnetic markers for fast application and removal. These can be made yourself by cutting from a thin(2mm) sheep of magnetic material and sticking the markers onto that. works super well for the steel ferrous bodies of cars.

    Great Video as usual.
    Found a method I really like with the einstar. Wide Painters tape on the body panel. Tracking dots on the painters tape. Then peel the tape and reuse as one large strip of tracking dots.

    Would like to see the Einstar against the Range 2 for sure. Those are the two scanners I'm tying to decide between. I especially like that the Range2 can be used with a phone and having the scanning screen right in front of you seems to be more convenient than having to turn your head every 3 seconds to follow your scan on a PC monitor.

    • @agerrgerra1361
      @agerrgerra1361 Před 4 měsíci

      I got the revopoint inspire a week or two ago and it's worth noting that the mobile/phone scanning mode limits a single scan to just 3000 frames, so at 18 fps that's just under 3 minutes of scanning. Dark mode seems to scan at around 8 fps or lower so it'll stretch that time to over 6 minutes. It's been good for scanning suspension components but much larger objects would be harder to capture in only 3000 frames, especially when you have to move slowly and smoothly to maintain tracking. You can merge scans
      If you have the money and a good PC or laptop that you can put near a garage, the Einstar sounds like a no brainer. If I had one I'd probably get a cheap little monitor and an HDMI extension cord to walk around with. When I'm scanning off the computer I barely look away from the monitor, since it shows you a view of what you're scanning anyways.

    • @watsonstudios
      @watsonstudios Před 4 měsíci

      @@agerrgerra1361 Yes, if I did the Einstar, I would definitely create a remote monitor, maybe with a wireless HDMI setup or if I can clone my monitor to my phone, that would be great too. Just need to figure out how to do that. I also need to see if my computers are up to spec for the Einstar. I have quite a few dual Xeon 12 core machines with 32-48 gigs of ram but I need to make sure my CPUs are not too old or have the correct feature set required.

    • @Alphachanel
      @Alphachanel Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@watsonstudios With the Einstar it's the GPU that's the major feature required as it needs an nVidia card as the software requires Cuda for the scan data processing. I've been assessing a few scanners for work and the Einstar is one, if we did get it I'd be tempted to borrow it :cough: to see if I could get it running with Zuda (an open source version of Cuda, though sadly recently active development has been stopped but a large chunk of the features are there apparently) and a Radeon GPU.

    I bought myself a creality ferret and get perfectly along with it for my purposes (re-engineering of smaller parts or getting geometry for additional instrument holder and so on). Now that i got myself a Passat B3 Variant for a little money and plan to use it for road trip purposes i would really love to scan the interior so i can build a camping box in Fusion. As the interior is mostly covered by dark plastic or carpet I am looking for ideas how to improve the surface for a better scan. As you tested and used many scanners in different use cases do you maybe have an idea of how to work around? Thanks for your videos anyways. I just got hyped as I saw your newest video in my yt feed.

    If you can, you should check out the Creality Ferret(any of them, scanner is the same in all kits). I used the base one for half a year for car parts and scanning entire underfloors of cars, before switching to Einstar. An honestly, for the bang for buck price difference of needed hardware(einstar+laptop), i was more impressed with the ferret. That being said, i'm not giving up the einstar now that i have it lol.

    I know you've already been bombarded with requests for the Range 2, but I'm here to do the same 😂.
    And here's my Rant Alert!
    <
    Including clips like the one at 13:56 is the most helpful thing you can do for us! Seeing that overlap and stack up of tolerances that the scanner just can't keep up with, gives me terrible dread just watching! Having tried scanning medium sized parts with the Mole, I know that once you see that overlap, you can expect your end to end accuracy to be off in the scale of inches.
    >
    I want the range 2 to work, and I want a nice handheld/portable option, but in my heart, I know that it will never be able to compare to the einstar. The amount of energy going into computing while scanning with the einstar will never be mirrored with a smartphone (at least with current tech).
    Love your work! Your videos have been super helpful!

    Few questions/comments. How is that elegoo behind you? heard they were kind of dodgy but for the build size and cost it seems good. I also bought a einstar with your code last night and saw a review that someone used scotch/painters tape on parts like the windshield and drew lines and shapes to help the scanner. I thought this might be a good alternative to markers as it will make unique shapes for the scanner to pick up (and easier to clean up)

    @makingformotorsport one thing to note, although the scan appears to have no orientation, it does in fact, orientate the scan to the first frame. Its not ideal but you can help orientation by making sure your first frame is square to the x and y. It does still need and external program as you say, but it can make viewing in Revoscan a bit more sensible.
    Did you try scanning the beeeeemer in daylight with the Einestar?
    With the Range you can scan outside at night and in low sunlight dusk as it is the infrared from the sunlight that causes the lack of scan results during the day.

    I don't think a gimicky brand like Revopoint is going to ever top the Einstar. Just picked up an Einstar this morning and the MAIN thing Einstar has over the rest of the competition is the fact that it has a professional line of scanners because they're an "actual" scanner company so they know how to build one. All of these other brands like Revopoint, 3dmakerpro, creality, etc are just trying to ride the scanner wave by appealing to the casual person at home with a 3d printer since it's another "3d" product to have. Save up and get the Einstar because ultimately, buying cheap is the same as buying twice. And if you're serious about 3d work, then you will have a PC with the appropriate specs built to sustain the demand these things drive

    • @MakingforMotorsport
      @MakingforMotorsport  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I get what you are saying, I’ve got more than enough PC for the Einstar, but if you are a casual and only have enough money for a POP3 or a Range then I get it, a scanner is better than no scanner…. They just need some patience…

      It’ll come, RevoPoint have said they will send one….
      $1k will get you an Einstar, but if you don’t already have a PC with the minimum specs then you’ll need to upgrade…
      I ran below minimum specs for a while, a lower cpu means processing takes longer, a lower gpu means slower scanning and more tracking loses, and lower RAM limits the size of the scans you can take… pick your poison!

    @bad_decision_works Před 4 měsíci +1

    Perfect timing for this video. I really want to buy a 3D scanner to design some parts for my race car, but I am a mac-boy, so einstar is not an option. And the range feels like it's a waste of money compared to the einstar.

    • @MakingforMotorsport
      @MakingforMotorsport  Před 4 měsíci

      Hopefully the Range2 is closer in performance. But if you are tied to OSX then you can’t have Einstar. Like I said in the vid, having to buy an all singing all dancing laptop is often a deal breaker (I just spent an ungodly amount on one…)

      Another question: my car is a Volo 240... the definition of a large car with flat panels. But does it help with scanning if there is stickers/patterns on the car? My car is completely covered in decals and I have a plotter and cheap film. Is that an easy fix for the tracking loss?

    • @MakingforMotorsport
      @MakingforMotorsport  Před 4 měsíci

      @bad_decision_works I’ll be honest I don’t know. I don’t think that it uses colour to track so I doubt it… but if anyone knows better please chime in..

    • @bad_decision_works
      @bad_decision_works Před 4 měsíci

      @@MakingforMotorsport Ah, so the feature tracking is purely on actual tangible features.. hmm. I'd like to experiment a little more on 3D scanning in combination with owning a sticker plotter. Something I would try is to cut a bunch of different shapes in reflective film, to see if that helps with scanning and still be easily removable because it will be strips or larger shapes, instead of a bunch of dots that takes hours to peel off.
      And yeah, buying a windows laptop purely to use for scanning is really not an option. Those 2000 euro's i'd rather spend on a new engine hahaha.
      And also, running windows on my macbook is probably not going to work (because 2019 M1 processor) and I want something that just works out-of-the-box.

      Fingers crossed the Raptor has just as good if not better NIR scanning functionality, and the laser scanning takes it to the next level.
      I will be mainly using it for Motorsport. I could so use it right now, to help with some front suspension geometry, that I think is bent and twisted.

      Oh soon I hope. Got some 3D scanners to do first… (it gets the views and that gets the money…)

    I requested this review too.. but I'd already bought one by now lol Still unused as of yet though.
    Have to admit, I was a bit disappointed at the results you got with the Range vs the Einstar..
    But the realisation that with a few tricks posted here in the comments and elsewhere on youtube, plus the actual price difference in the two scanners means it's not as bad I first thought.
    I can get by with a little faffing around with pre-scan prep, some post processing and spending 1/4 of the £ 😁
    Maybe I'll upgrade to the einstar and powerhouse laptop later. lol

      There are loads of tricks, but I try not to unleash them on review videos because it kinda skews results, if I just post the raw files then everyone gets a good idea of what can be (fairly) easily achieved.
      There’s no doubt tho with the application of more effort or time, the Range will still do a good job
