- For context, the outside lane was stopping and starting violently so I wanted to move over, I saw a gap but sped up as a lorry was indicating to go into lane 2 too and didn't want him to have to slow.

Why are you driving in lane 3 when you’re not overtaking anyone? It’s very poor driving and it’s very poor lane discipline, no matter if you’re on a single carriageway with at least 2 lanes going in the same direction, dual carriageway or motorway, lane 1 is the normal driving lane, always drive in the left most lane at all times, the exceptions are when overtaking or turning right, except for on a motorway, as you can’t turn right on a motorway, drive in lane 1 at all times, use lane 2 to overtake vehicles in lane 1, use lane 3 to overtake vehicles in lane 2 etc and then return to lane 1 when you’re not overtaking anybody, you can use the right lane if you’re turning right, hogging a lane when you’re not overtaking is not only illegal but it’s so annoying for other drivers as you’re preventing them from getting past you, they can’t undertake you so they have to move lanes to overtake you on the right, it’s really not difficult once you understand it but please have a read through of the Highway Code and please book some refresher lessons on lane discipline on multi-lane roads, rule 163 applies to single carriageway roads with at least 2 lanes going in the same direction, rule 268 applies to motorways including dual carriageways, please have a read of them in the Highway Code, no offence intended, I’m only trying to help you.
It was stop start traffic, there was a lorry to my left just out of shot. Moving over would have caused him to slow (to allow an increased braking distance in traffic at 40mph), or I would have to slow excessively to pull in behind it making cars in the outside lane brake for the manoeuvre.
