- The Lazarus Project was a 1972 Mach 1 done by Jeff Ford in the late 1990s. We brought the car home in late 2017 and let it lay dormant for an entire year. On this episode we attempt to start the car. We review why it is in the condition it is. We look to future projects on the car.

I know that feeling... Brought my '73 Mach 1 with a 351C 4V and 4 Speed (Gold Glow with Ginger interior) home after some years a few weeks ago. Have always a smile on my face when it starts, runs and smells like it is ;-)

I’m with you there, I have a 73.
My Dad was a Mustang man. I think he owned every one since 1965. His last was a 1971 Mach1 351 Cleveland w/Ram Air, and a Hurst 4 speed. Great car and sounded great. Dad would down shift going down a grade and you could hear her back fire.
I share your love of these cars. I too was infected at a young age and had to have one. It took me 33 years, but I got one! Install a relay and get 12V to your Pertronix. That should help. Glad that you got the old girl running again! SWEET!!

These mustangs are starting to grow on me a little. I love the cleveland and its my personal opinion that you would be hard pressed to find another engine that wakes up so nicely with bolt on parts. I got 1 in my 67 fairlane. The parts available in the after market is really good now.

Wooo finally my year gets some love.
I had a 71 notchback. Took the 302/3 spd out and plugged in a 351 Windsor and a Borg Warner T10. It regularly blew the doors off of Cleveland equipped Mustangs.
It's running rough and rich because you're not getting a full 12 volts to your coil. I just went through this with my F100 that has the resistance ignition wire. Put a new MSD distributor and coil and she was running pig rich and #7 plug wouldn't fire. Checked the coil voltage and it was around 7 volts. Ran a jumper wire from the battery to coil and within 30 seconds she cleared up and started hitting on all 8.
Yeah, we will be doing a video on how to get the 12 volt signal and keep the original tach.

I'm running a built 351C in my truck. I've had an Edelbrock 650, an Edelbrock 750, and most recently a Demon 1900 625cfm. I tuned all three with my AEM wideband O2 gauge. Out of the three, my pick is the Demon 1900 625cfm. My truck has never accelerated harder than it has with that carb on it! The only changes from stock I made was to go two sizes larger (leaner) on the metering rods because it was set very rich out of the box. If you don't mind swapping carbs, I totally recommend the Demon. It isn't very expensive either.

I use to have a mach1 1972 and sadly I sold it...I just bought a Mercury cougar 1971 with a lovely 351 Cleveland bring back the happiness of the sound of Cleveland

Pop bought a72 mach1 in spring at Norris Ford.. Dundalk ..took vacations in it for awhile. My graduation present was that car.
My cousin had a red 72 mach 1 when i was a kid. I rode in it and was hooked i was probably 10 or so but wanted a mustang from then on. First car, mustang still have it. Also i bought a corvette that had been sittng along time and it had the green goo in the fuel system also.

Hey Joe! Yours is way later than mine. We'll be bumping along on it here in the near.
I say we find a good early 429 or 460 core, and build a NICE 472 stroker for this beautiful MACH. A pair of Edelbrock CJ heads, a mild 268 Lunati cam, RPM intake, QF 750 vacuum carb, re-curved stock Motocraft distributor by Parkland Machine, Crites long tube swap headers. Looking at 500 hp. But.... more important 570- plus lb ft. torque! That kind of power isn't too expensive either with a 460. When do we begin?? P.S. I love Clevelands, but I love 429/460's much more. I built one for my 68 Torino and can't drive it without smiling from ear to ear. Fun Fact: Your MACH weighs more than the 66-69 Fairlane too!
No. LOL. If I do anything it would be a 383 stroked Cleveland. Way to much work and money in the 429 swap. I DO like the idea of a 429 build. Maybe we can do it to the 429 in Jack's Marques...
@@AutoRestoMod Stroking a 4bbl Cleveland is a great idea. They really need the stroke to provide the low end torque lost in the ports. Personally, I like 2bbl heads better for the street with stock crank. I think a 385 series build would be fun for the viewers since they're so ubiquitous, and great power-per-dollar. Yank that Cleveland out of the wagon, and show the kids at home how to do the swap with nothing more than a Crites header and motor mount swap kit. It's easier to change plugs on the 460 than an FE in the same body! I bet Crites would love to offer-up a kit for you guys.

My mach has a 12 to1 460.ported dove heads.comp solid cam.holley 750.or 850.aluminum Factory experimental copy of a cj intake.big top 4spd. Oh yea I love clevlands.BUT ITS ABOUT CUBES.
The only thing really expensive about a big block swap and your mach 1 is to reinforce the frame so the car doesn't break into when you Unleash the Power of that big motor.
Good job getting her started, I have a 73 Mach 1 that I am restoring now, it will have a bunch of 72 stuff on it because I never liked the 73 bumpers, so 72 fenders and chrome bumpers it will be. I picked up a cleveland motor a few months ago and will be rebuilding that after I get the rest of the new floor/trunk/quarters welded back in. Dude! My favorite is the 71' Mach 1, When I was 11 I seen it on the Oglethorpe Ford show room floor in Savannah, Ga. when we were picking up Mom's 71 Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop w/ 351 Windsor and FMX trans... I still have the Galaxie 500 and a donor car plus a 71' LTD Brougham. Also I have a 1972 F-250 from Fordland in Lakewood, Co. :) Can you tell I'm a Ford knut:)
This car came from Lakewood too. This car and your F250 might have been lot mates.
My1971 Mach 1 has been a ton of fun. Had to re-body the car because of rust and rot so yours is holding-up well. Great video!! Keep them coming!!!

I followed the Lazerus project in Mustang Monthly when you did the first restoration. I own a June of 72 built Qcode Mach1 and was doing a lot of the same things you were. I'm a little surprised at the poor condition of Lazerus in the time since the completion. My car still looks great but I've continued to work to keep it that way. I'll follow the newest restoration with great interest. Best of luck.
Sadly the car went though some hard times away from me. It spent several months outside at a shop. My fault really. I had no where to put the car. Plus the dipping process kept paying us back in bad, bad ways. Lesson learned.

Yo Cuz, It still sounds great, got a tremendously cool "chop", I remember riding from Lakeland to Tampa in the back seat(not the most comfortable place to be) to a show ..Bill something or other Ford dealer in Tampa (Currie I think). Let me know when you get ready to road test, I wanna ride in the front seat this time.
I so wish I could have picked up that 73 years ago. The guy that was selling it had started painting it the Ford racing orange color. May one day
if you have an old charger that has the engine start 200 to 300 amp mode you can wake that battery up. just take off the battery caps and run the charger to boil it off for 30 minutes let it rest for 15 then do it again for another 30 then rest for 15. keep doing that all day keeping an eye on the fluid level. by the next day you should be able to empty the electrolyte and put fresh in. use the charger again, by end of the second day you should have a fairly good battery again. ive seen it done and it works.
Here is a fun fact that Mustang guys like to forget. The 1971 Boss 351 was faster than any Mustang to that point and for many years to come. It ran high 13 in a magazine writeup, faster than any of the big blocks. There has been a a lot of hate for the "big" mustang as it was 12 inches longer and 6 inches wider than the 65 but the wider part helps handling. Look at the prices today, this car has shot up in value.

@@hotrodray9884 Car companies sent their best car to be tested and they would set it up to run fast. The tires were a limiting factor in the day. With modern tires, weight savings thru headers, aluminum heads and intake the these cars are fast. I have a 1971 Mach 1 set up this way and it is quick.
I've seen Boss 351s pull 13 second times at the Pure Stock drags...It is a stunningly fast car.
@@AutoRestoMod There is a huge difference between a 15 second car and a 13 second car. There is a site that lists cars by their quarter mile times, the 13 second cars are rare and expensive. Yes, you can put a 351w in a 65 Mustang and make it fast but then it is a different car that can not handle the torque, corner or brake in a safe manner, major modifications are needed. I love all the classic Mustangs but the 71-73 was set up to handle big power and the 351C can make it with a little tweaking.

Are you looking for any other ginger interior parts besides door panels. I'm going to buy some parts 5/11/19 off a guy that has a 72&73 coupe for my 72 mach 1. The 73 has a ginger interior but no door panels. If anything comes to mind I can look.

Im still confused why FORD didn't keep the 69 or 70 style for 5 or 6 years I have a 69 and 70 fastback it's no comparison to them horrible styling by Ford just my unwanted opinion still love these old jewels no matter what year
Wow, "horrible styling" tell me how you really feel. I like both body styles for different reasons. I prefer the '71-'73. And I prefer a '69 SportsRoof to a '70. Especially in a 428CJ Mach 1 dressed in Vintage Burgundy with white interior. Mmmmm.
