Working at one of the busiest CEX’s in the country and honestly I paid out more cash buy ins than I did exchange. It was the Leeds branch and I think it all depends on your region. Low economic area will attract more people who take the cash and higher economic areas will go for the voucher.

When I worked at CeX many many moons ago I would say it was a 50/50 split of people taking cash to taking vouchers. Cash was usually any hardware that would be worth £50+ or brand new games, vouchers tended to be when they were just trading in lots of lower value items like old games and dvds. However, this was before the 3 item rule and before they started taking retro game stock as well.

I've started taking cash recently as I'm out of work on longterm sick. I bought 3 games recently at a charity shop for 50p each and sold to cex for cash to the some of £8. I know it's only £8 but cash is king currently. I'm heading to car boots this weekend seeing whats about to do the same. If its something I want to play i'll keep it otherwise its CEX cash.

    I split it.
If the item trades for £5 but they offer me £3 in cash, I’ll take the cash.
But if it trades for £7 and they offer me £3 cash, I’ll take the trade value.
It’s all about the % of cash to trade for me.

like you said some people don't want the hassle dealing with time wasters on Facebook , and the fees of eBay , and CEX don't stock the latest game you might want, so sell the stuff you don't want and buy it from the other game shops that don't trade in

Agree with your points on the cash, think I’ve done it twice in the last 15 years when for for a bill payment needed asap.
I actually saw someone the other day sell some stuff for cash, then by the time I’d had a look round they were back in the queue and bought stuff with said cash (not sure if they used it all!) 🤯

About 1 months ago in cex i sold my boxed gba player for the gamecube and broadband adapter and a pile of gamecube games for £328.00 cash and i also tried to sell them a sealed (red seal) resident evil for the n64 for mint price. Cex refused to pay mint price for this game as they said they had to open up the box to check the cartridge and instructions so i refused to let them have it. I recently sold resident evil for £400.00 because i was desperate for the cash to pay some bills, and regretted doing it because i think it was worth a lot more than £400.00

Ill take cash for eBay items that haven't sold in roughly 3 months. For example, if I have a DS Lite listed on eBay at £40, I'd only get about £30 after fees and postage. If CEX offers £28 for the same item, I'd be inclined to go with CEX for a cash offer since it's less hassle.

I take cash as most of the times when I see a game I want, it’s usually cheaper elsewhere then CeX so trading doesn’t do much justice.
E.g. Dead Space on the PS5 was on sale recently in Argos and Amazon for £45 whilst CeX still sells it for £55 so I used the cash for the game I sold to CeX to buy dead space for cheaper and brand new sealed copy.

If you look at their homepage, in a number of cases you aren’t being offered that much more for a trade in as opposed to cash. Resident Evil 4 PS5 say £35 cash, £41 voucher. At the lower end Call of Duty WW2 XBox £1 cash £2 voucher. Some games there is a fair discrepancy like say double voucher value to cash. There is a great variability in game prices across stores these days and CEX is most certainly not the cheapest so cash can make sense as opposed to voucher depending upon what you are intending to buy next.

I’ve taken cash a few times because CeX were buying amiibo for really high prices because they were selling then really high, so I would buy then from the My Nintendo Store and sell them ti get £10 instantly, once I paid off the price to buy the amiibos with the cash I would take the vouchers.

I'll tell why I always take cash but not everyone can be in my situation. In my country, which isn't the UK, retro games can be relatively cheaper compared to the UK when you use the exchange rate, so what I used to do is bring a few games back with me which would have cost me around £100 and easily make a £300 profit by selling to CEX and other game shops.

  • @smuzz2179

i use the cash based on the profit margin of what i paid in total for consoles etc if i come across something at boot fair or charity shop for say £1 if it trade s in for £3-£5 cash pound and i have a good amount of the same items in cash value it saves the aggro off trying to sell on eBay as the difference is not much more than than after fees so if profit with out the aggro of posting is quicker then yes cash is fair depending if i want to have vouchers or cash to add to my collecting fun/voucher build up some times its just easier than bother with hassle of waiting for it to sit around online if its a very conman game/games good video though.
touching on the asking about people selling in items and asking to buy them my cex and a few others i go to don't mind and they even step out side of the shop and ask to buy them selves for there collection its happened a few times were all in the same boat cheaper the better for collecting no one wants to spend the top price if not needed try it next time if you want to, you don't ask you never no the answer 🤔😀

I sell for cash when I can. If I can buy a game for a “less than cex price” and trade it in for that cash back, that’s perfect for me. Means I can recycle the cash around doing exactly that. My cex is in the city centre, a solid 8 miles away Id guess, and im disabled, so constantly recycling vouchers and games through cex just isn’t possible for me. If cex didn’t charge delivery per item online, I’d do it more. Cash being a breaking even after completion or even profit means that money can recycle through Vinted, eBay, wherever. It’s better for me for those reasons, I’m sure other people have other reasons too. Also worth noting that trading in for cash by sending games to them in the post via free Royal Mail collection and post is doable, whereas using a voucher and buying from them online incurs the extra fees

These might be stolen goods (hence 2 copies of the same thing) OR they review gamse for a living (yes you shouldnt then sell these!) - and being ex CEX staff we did used to have an unspoken policy of "do a deal outside the shop" where you'd buy off the person selling but not in premesis. I think it's very dependant on what people want. You know, I've traded somethings in for cash with my Nintendo wii and some blu rays. I traded in my ps5 for cash 6 weeks ago. Because I already have an Xbox. And I wanted to start a snes collection and my local cex didn't have what I wanted. They had the snes mini but not the original and no way did I want a 400 pound cex voucher. Wanted the cash so I could buy the snes I wanted and get the games I wanted when ready. So I bought the snes and a couple of games from a cex 20 miles away. And my cex, is rubbish for retro and most the staff and managers are rude. Except one dude, who used to work at the game where I live. Now, I'm building a very selective collection. I now have, Super castlevania 4, Mortal kombat 2 and ult MK3(which were my main reasons for getting a snes again), Mega Man X unboxed which was the last in the country at cex, wrestlemania, and today a game I've longed for Adventures of Batman and Robin. I managed to get a boxed version for £110 from a retro game store. Cex are now charging 95 for an unboxed version and it seems hard to get hold of. And thankfully some of the snes games I've bought have now gone up by £5-10 each from what I bought from cex only a month ago. But obviously, I am aware of why they've gone up.

If I want a game , I will always under pay the cex asking price. I try to pay what cex offer to cash tbh 😂. Sometimes I win . Mostly I don’t. When I do though. For example. I wanted a 2DS. Didnt rly want to spend much. Got a bundle £25. Console (faulty easy fix although , console always has sound on lmao) . Cash the Mario/ value ables quick a cex. Free console. Then some credit I’ll take with the third party games if they worth it & pick up an odd ps2/3/Xbox game for the collection. I do prefer the cash system. But I’ll admit it’s harder to find the deals & I see what you mean in this video cheers

So you don’t know why someone would take cash then go on to explain why someone would take cash and why you took cash. ………🤷‍♂️

When people are taking the Micheal with offers on eBay I lower the price so I clear the cash price on cex after fees and postage. If still no bites, I'll just send it to cex for the cash. I do it this way as I have no cex near me.

If I have something in mind I want then I’d go for voucher.
I’m not much of a gamer anymore so don’t buy games to play, haven’t played a game in years, I buy them to trade.
Hence I’d say sometimes but not because I’m desperate

in my opinion. games are sold at a higher price in cex then ebay 99% of the time. i'd rather take cash if the game i am wanting to buy is at a much higher price then ebay. if £1-2 more i will take credit but if £5 or more higher then ebay i will take the cash. i prefer buying games with cash rather then credit as i will also forget i have the credit and half the time either lose it or accidentally bin it as i will just see it as a receipt. Also if a game i want is on ebay but not in stock in cex i will take the cash to put it towards getting said game.

I took cash when I sold my ps4 pro and Xbox one x when I wanted to buy my ps5 because they was no way I was going paying roundabout 650 for a preowned ps5 from cex when I could get a new one from smith toys with horizon, forbidden west bundled in it for retail price

I’ve only taken cash twice. Most recent is because I wanted the new 2k wrestling game so I thought I would get rid off games I don’t really play to get a game that I would be playing

Can somebody buy few games for me and send it to EU? Ebay prices are higher than CEX and I used to live in UK and been in CEX many many times... I loved that store.

I did this in 2018 when I lost my job. I had PLENTY of money saved in my savings account... but I didn't wanna dip into that so took cash for my 3ds which was only worth £36 at the time 🤦🙄🥴 along with many dreamcast & my original pokemon games😭😭😱 now I have my house and am stable since then I only ever take voucher to put towards my retro games collection ✌️😎

Probably to buy drugs.. Regardless, I don’t get why you would think it’s uncommon to take cash. A voucher can’t buy groceries etc.

I Often buy things on vinted , try to sell it on vinted or Facebook or any other way, and if no One buys it I Will sell it or trade it in , i Will always buy things in a way that if i sell it to cex i dont lose Money or even make small amounts of ir
There is also sometimes when I see that I can make double or triple in cex i Will just sell it there for Money 🤷

  • @Westwoodisapleb

In my experience barely anyone takes the voucher. Stuff elsewhere costs money, cex vouchers can only be used in there and are WAY overpriced. Cex are just poor value if you buy games there.
