Same for me. As of now I don't have the materials to create one but watching someone else create it is fun.
Same for me too. I love the ingenuity and creativity behind this. I wonder what kinds of retro gaming projects are possible when I see things like this.

thanks for this series, i am in the middle of my build right now. this video came just at the right time. its surprising how much this little project has ended up costing me to this point. i decided to go with a repro gameboy shell and build everything into that, but it has made things challenging in their own ways. $200 later; i'm almost done!

Yep with today's technology, you can stiff sooo much stuff in a gameboy case unlike backthen, and despites there are 2 motherboards inside the gameboy case, it only took half the space inside, the other empty space are meant for the cartride & battery's, with the raspberry board, you take full benefit of the space inside the gameboy case.

I can't believe I watched every single one of these videos, including your newer one. This is so over my head, it's ridiculous, but so watchable. It's stimulated an interest for me, for sure. I'm curious, with such an active community, making more and more specific boards and pieces to aid in making a GBZero, how simplified has the entire process become since your second GBZero build?

if you end up making a revision 2 you should have a pin header to attach the 2 halves. something i never put in my hackaday project but it made attaching both halves and wrangling wires much easier. also i utilized the regulator built into the screen to power the rpi.

@@scritch9549 i ended up getting a job in supply chain management. I negotiate contracts mostly. Pays well, but I hardly use the skills I gained during my engineering education. However, the problem solving mindset can be used everywhere.

I think you can make a JST extension wire for the battery, one side male one side female, so you still can unplug the batter for the battery door.
Now that's a project! Watched all the video's, well done. One critical point though, is there something to do about the amount of glue?

i have a RPi2 and i would want to know if this can be done with a Wii U Pad... because that pad has all the buttons, even the analog sticks... so that way you could also play PS1 games! or N64 games too...
anyways, i loved this guide... in my country is so hard to get even the RPi1... i got mine in Colombia...
it would be really cool if you do this again with other portable consoles... like GBA or a DS or a 3DS... or even a microGBA...

You've probably had a load of random suggestions just like this, but I really want you to play 3DS games on a mod like this - try to get the circle pad and everything on there. That would be so cool, I dunno if it's plausible though
for removing hot glue, try isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, just a drop or 2, and the glue just falls off :)
Maybe for the next project consider doing a homeserver (NAS) / Plex server? Or a custom controller for the PC?
i would like a guide of a GB Zero with all custom parts showing a really easy-made GB Zero :D
Thank you for your Guide!!! I need help, I didnt add the USB hub and used the Gameboy Zero PCB board instead of the Gameboy controller board. Everything turns on but my Teensy board only works if i plug USB micro into it and then feed to the USB we installed on the side of Gameboy Zero. Also I wanted to know if you had a link to find that type of Prototyping board you use i cannot find and every other Prototyping board i use seems to cause issues and my power goes in and out.
I have to say I am practically giddy over this. I'm from the generation that the Gameboy was released in. I've never actually done any type of work like this before, what skill level do you say this is? I apologize if this questions is answered by a blog, I've not been there yet, but generally speaking what is a ball park figure to do a project like this?
This is really cool, I plan on doing this and following your guide. Can this be done with Gameboy Color (I would really like to do this with the transparent purple one, for nostalgic reasons), or gameboy advance?
I think with the custom boards that he was showing made by the people on the forums it SHOULD be entirely possible as they will take up much less space than recycling the gameboys own board and what not.

How does the picture quality compare on 3.5" composite vs 3.5" VGA/digital? is the difference not noticeable? I know that the composite screens are substantially cheaper and more prevalent, but if the difference is negligible...

Iv finally nearly finished my gbz just waiting for the amp to arrive. Iv made an audio filter which il install today I'm just struggling with the code to activate the gpio pins. Iv looked on the forums but I don't know where to input them. Do I quit emulation station and input something there? I'm not good with programming. The build itself is sick and a little different to other builds but this code, txt thing is doing my head in.

Quick question. I'm slowing gathering parts for this project and have causally watched the guides a few times. The usb hub is not essential right? Can't say I'd have any need to have wifi/bluetooth. Would prefer to make the build as uncomplicated as I possibly can, as this is all new to me. Thanks for your guides!
It's not totally necessary, no. You could just wire up the USB port on the pi to the teensy. Or if you went for GPIO controls, you could just wire up the USB port to an external port like I did in the videos - then you could plug in a thumb drive or wifi or whatever, should the mood strike you. :)

Why didn't you just move the battery connectro like you have with everything else it would of been easy to run the wires, but epic work so far.

It just makes me uncomfortable working with that kind of battery, and i don't know any who have worked with that before.

I was just thinking of if you could build it all into a wired 360 controller? Take out the rumble motors for battery room, the lead out would be the HDMI A bit like the Gamestick if you remember that?

I'm planning on doing a sort of epilogue post/video with some tips for configuring retropie and that sort of thing. I could definitely get a wiring diagram in there too. :) There are a few floating around the forums, and I know one of them was nearly (if not completely) identical to what I did.
instead of using the teensy, why not simply solder the buttons to the rpi0's gpio??
would save space, money and battery...

for a 2000 Mah battery would say around 2-3 hours
In my experience it's about 3-4 hours.

then you need to get a lipo series 4 battery. then dont have the same problem as series 1 and 2 have.

did you use the 1000c or 500c power boost, and what is the difference if i used either-or?
The adafruit 1000c is an upgraded version of the 500c. It outputs 1000mah vs 500mah, which is great if you want it to charge faster. There are other things the 1000c does better than the 500c. But for a project like this, I'd go with the 1000c. Also you will have to be sure that your battery can handle 1000mah going to it.
I'll just file this guide under "Things I'd Love to do if I didn't have shaky old man hands"
