- In this video the Crazy Pigeon Lady provides a crash course in how to speak pigeon, explaining the different sounds and calls of the Rock Dove (Columba Livia), ancestor of all feral and domestic pigeons.
I had a pigeon for 13 years, technically it was my dads pigeon as she had chosen him as her (mate) she would often try to mate with his hand which was the cutest and oddest thing to see, but she accepted me and my brother and our cats as part of the flock, she kept the cats in line by chasing them around the house, she was such a smart bird, and so loving and affectionate, we had a person boarding with us who didn’t like her as she would attack him whenever she saw him, which is understandable as he was not part of our “flock” and she saw him as a threat, he decided one day to take her from our home and drive her out to this beach about 45KM away from our home, she was missing for a few days and we were absolutely distraught because she only ever circled around the house when she flew outside. But she showed up 3 days later, and we didn’t think too much into it. But when our boarder saw her back at home he confessed that he tried to get rid of her and he didn’t understand how she got back, anyways he was kicked out. But it was so amazing that she came home from that far, especially since all she’s ever known is our home/ area. She was born at our house and never really went too far out of sight when she would fly outside. She’s been dead for a couple years now, and I never knew too much about pigeons, I learnt everything I knew from her, especially her sounds and her actions such as she would give kisses by sticking her beak inbetween our knuckles and move her beak around, and when she would get pats she would fluff up and close her eyes slowly, she would also give dad kisses by gently nibbling on his lips which is crazy, because she’s never seen dad kiss anyone, I think she would do it because we would kiss her, so she noticed that’s where to give kisses. She died of old age, but she wasn’t alone, we all sat around while dad held her, it was a quick death, she spasmed a little and then she was gone. I do miss her a lot but I don’t think I could ever get another pigeon and have the same feelings I had towards her. She was so special❤️
That's so beautiful to hear ,I'm feeding some wild ones an honestly it's taken so long to gain these few trust I also feed cockatoos but some are so naughty an destructive. I still love them all .But thank u for your post :)

Thank you! Pigeons are indeed well known for the sounds of their flapping; some species even have specially shaped primary flight feathers with notches that make even more distinctive sounds!

It took me a while to understand what each sound means cuz this video didn't exist yet! I have 9 pigeons and have noticed that the head bowing movements help in communicating with them also, it seems to let them know that your not a threat and they respond better with it.

You make those pigeon sounds so well that my pigeon friend was watching your video intently and making little baby pigeon squeaks back at you! No wonder he doesn't understand my attempts at pigeon: they are rubbish! I'm going to have to practice! 🤣

Thank you for your great videos. We are caring for a rescue for eight weeks and he started to coo in the middle of the night. It was a very short burst of the version 2 coo and we already suspected that he wasn’t calling but that he probably had been dreaming and acted upon it. But this really helped!
I had figured out the sound my new pigeon makes, the WUH was a sort of 'im mad no touch' sound and you confirmed my thoughts when you made that same sound as your alert sound.
I’m currently fostering a couple pigeons, the first ever birds I’m taking care of. One of them did the warning coo today when I went to move my hair away from my face, so it’s good to know he was probably warning me about the dangerous hand near me instead of being scared of me!

Just found your channel, your videos are very helpful. I just got a wild pigeon handed to me that was saved by someone at my job. Little fella almost drowned. So far ive got him eating and drinking out of dishes and will perch on my hand as I walk around. Thank you so much for the information, also helps its from a pretty crazy pigeon lady :)

a pair just laid eggs a month back in my balcony, now chics are grown up, today i tried your voice methods on chics and they reacted with chirping sounds, roaming the room and were trying to look for their parents. Its more fun playing with them now :p. Thanks :)
I had to subscribe because you really have those coos down. I am just a general pigeon fan and have a flock of feral pigeons visit daily. I feel strongly that they get a hard time so want them to feel happy when on my little bit of roof, which they seem to be as they do lots of sunbathing, preening and resting here as well as eating. I try to give them what they need to be healthy and at the moment am trying to get them to come so I can deal with minor ailments and any injury individually. I love them and am getting to know all these sounds, I have loved pigeons since childhood when my uncle Charlie had a loft and always feel they, and crows get a rough deal (I try to keep my interactions with the mated pair of crows as separate as possible because they disturb the pigeons.

I've just picked up a fledged pigeon who had been attacked by a cat. She's thankfully very friendly, this video has helped a tons to get an idea of how she is feeling :) I've reared many types of birds but never a pigeon

So, I'm awake at 3am (I'm a chronotype dolphin) and came across your video. Was very excited to learn pigeon lingo to better understand my four pet pigeons... Tried to watch... and then my rooster starts crowing. 🤦🏼♀️ Yes, my rooster that sleeps in a dog crate in my room so that he doesn't annoy the neighbors too early in the morning. I learnt my first pigeon vocalisations from the ferals who lived on our balcony. One red bar cock used to call for me in the morning.
First thing I did when we were introduced to our Phoebe Frilly Knickers was bow my head a few times. My husband thought I was bonkers, but I thought it was worth it. She's been with us eighteen months now, it's something she always responds to.
Thank you very much. We have a all white rock pigeon (Sheldon) we had him for 5 months now. he is our 1st adopted pigeon. He loves to spin and coo. Love watching tv. We was would what that grant sound he was making lookin out the window. I’m glad he considers us part of his flock. Now I know he is calling for me when we are out side. It’s nice to under stand him. He won’t fly to us when. We call him. He still just flying around my head. He will land near me. So for now we just let him do his own thing. He has the run of the house.

I’m watching this video here in Kuwait after days of trying to attract pigeons to come over to my window. Its difficult earning their trust, and I just sit by the window as still as possible while they feed. The slightest movement I make and they fly away. Still worth the while!
If you have any tips on earning their trust please do share 🙏🏼
Try maybe feeding them on the ground bil 7oush or el 9a6i7. Plus most mourning doves are a bit more frightful than rock doves. Try looking for rock doves around your area and if they're around your house, even better. Sug el 7amam bird feed is good and just try to hand feeding them and if you can grab one thats even better

I have two rescue pigeons, a male and a female, who had wing injuries and can not be released back to the wild. I love and am trying to understand them and gain a connection with them. The male will sometimes grunt when I come near but I hope he learns I am not a threat. They are adorable and very interesting birds.

Nice video, I no longer keep pigeons as I live in a building that's not allowed pets unfortunately, but when I did have my family home I had 3 lofts, I had all sorts. Rescue or course the were mostly ferals, which of course pigeon men scoffed at, rollers, racers, trumpeters, nuns, fantails, Chinese owls, anyway. I had never seen a female display until I got this young mostly white red grizzle roller hen (she was my favourite as we had an amazing bond, and she had sas, her name was speckles) she paired up to a beautiful docile pied blue checker, and she did more displaying than he did. He genuinely looked confused at times. After all those years I still have never seen another hen display like she did. She had attitude!!

So interesting, I have a flock of wild pigeons in my balcony they come join my breakfast each morning and they are huge wild and beautiful, I love their low voice tone it is so relaxing and meditational. birds are the mini angels to me, especially pigeons being so innocent and graceful in the air, apart from that I am in love with all birds, they are magical creatures. You are also amazing being such a fan of them, and a great teacher.

I appreciate this so much. Theres one thats sleeps under my air conditioner every night. I didnt know what to feed him and i want the pigeon to know that its safe. I would love to give it a home and feed this same pigeon that sleeps here every night. When its a winter storm im am very more concern it. An afraid that if i make a home for it it might not recognize where it usually sleeps. I love my pigeon.

yeah, it's so great right. I've been using Gem's tips to coo to my pigeon and it's so happy when she replies to me. It's like a super breakthrough. The mating call also brought about interesting responses lol.

My pigeon's flirting noise is very harsh. It starts off as a regular cooing and ends with a pronounced long growl as he postures himself up.

Wow, your pigeon voice is amazing. Can i please request you make a video of your pigeon voice in a looping mode. I would use it to trap a pigeon in our house and relocate it to another of our land, coz my sleep is disrupted already due to this very early morning pigeon noises.

that grunt noise they also make when they're on their nest and you put your finger too close they either wingslap you or peck you, not sure if it's the mother or father that goes all aggressive though.
Idk if I might have missed something in the video but I have a rescue pigeon and I know very little about pigeons- anyways every time I walk into his/hers line of sight, for example when I walk back into the living room after going to the toilet my pigeon will raise its wings and go coo-coo-coo-COO-COO. He/she does this to my mom and dad too.
Interesting! Difficult to tell without video but unless your bird is very young the wing raising might be a display of dominance, especially if your bird is male. He may be saying "im still the boss here, in case you forgot!"

I know this isnt this but i cant find an email address for you...could you do a pigeon enrichment video? I dont have a pet per se...i have the neighbourhood flock hangs out with me daily but roost elsewhere. I was just wondering what i could do to keep them busy through the day. Thank you, i love your videos and your research is impeccable. I totally appreciate what you do and am further inspired by your actions.
Thank you :-) Enrichment activities are designed for captive birds to replicate wild behaviour to prevent boredom because pet birds dont have to do all the things that wild birds spend their time doing. If your local flock are free flying ferals then theyll have plenty to do finding food, water, safe places to roost and avoiding danger so they dont really need enrichment but please do help them out by feeding them a feed mix designed for pigeons. They remember those that feed them and theyll keep coming back :-)

Question for Gem: I have a young (definitely under 1 year) rescue feral pigeon. (We are trying to rehab “her” weak legs. She has a damaged wing so release is not in her future.) My question is this: when we first got her, she was squeaking. About a week later, she started “honking.” She did both for about a week…now it’s only honking. I read that this is a vocal change that happens at around 8 weeks (?). But now I’m wondering if it’s the warning sound you described. She actually seems pretty comfortable with us; in fact, sometimes I think she’d be perfectly happy if we just held and snuggled her all day. But she still honks when I reach in to get her. No cooing (yet…). Thanks for the informative videos!
They do go through a bit of a transition stage where they honk a bit between squeaking and cooing, in a week or two they may be cooing fully - enjoy! They are cute little rage monsters when they enter their teens!

When you mentioned that one of the calls sounds a bit like a purring; I have a mourning dove that I am absolutely in love with, and I‘m pretty sure the feeling is mutual. She runs to me whenever I come round her cage, and out of the cage she enjoys sitting on my shoulder or on top of my head. I‘ve noticed that when I bring her near my face for kisses she does this thing that also feels like purring. There‘s hardly any sound to it, but I can feel her start to vibrate a little. I don‘t think it‘s fear because she seems to enjoy it, and she definitely lets you know when she is not happy. Plus when she‘s afraid she comes straight to me for security. Any ideas about what the vibrating is about? It seems positive but I want to be sure.

my pigeon survived the PMV she couldn't eat or stand but now she spins other than that she eats well likes a bath and is quit friendly. i bought her in of the streets so she wouldn't be hit by a car or attacked by a cat etc.. i have had her for all most 3 years now. but tonight i noticed new sounds from her which wasn't in your video she all ways greets me with the (im your mate )type of call. or the (where are you )call. but this was like a very quite short grunt and she stood bolt up right looking me right in the eye and as i moved along the cage she side stepped (which she doesn't normally do. she will do a couple of side steps and jump down and jump bake up) to follow me and continued this sound. is she trying to tell me she is feeling poorly. i do hope not not after all she has been throe. Thank you. x
Hmm, sounds like she might be doing the 'alarm' call mentioned in the video but difficult to know for sure without the context. Sounds like she love you though and well done for rescuing a PMV bird :-)
Very interesting! And obviously effective, as the pigeon came to you when you called. But I didn't hear you make the sound I hear the most: krookrookroo krookroo repeated several times and ended with a single kroo. I'd love to hear your take on that one!

Hi, I think the call you are referring to is the display call for courtship/dominance. Its the most difficult for me to replicate with the human voice so my impression of it is not as accurate as some of the others :-)
@@thecrazypigeonlady8731 Yes, it could be a statement of territory. That sound has always fascinated me, ever since I was 3 or 4, when my mum put me in her room when I had a fever. I was hallucinating with that sound coming from the balcony!

So I had a pigeon show up on my porch 3 months ago and it had a broken wing. Im pretty sure its a male but it doesn't seem to like us at all. I hear him make great noises when no ones there and I think is he missing his mate and I feel bad keeping them away for one another if that's the case. Should I let him go his wing is better and he can fly but im nervous because its winter and I've already had him 3 months. What should I do? I don't think he's old because his beak isn't very crusty maybe a couple years old.
I had someone's homing pigeon show up on my front porch about a month ago. Contacted the owner from the tag on the leg. He did not seem to want the pigeon back and to release him would not be a good idea with all the hawks and animals in my area. We never get pigeons around here. I have kept it in an empty room with a window but need to create a better living space. Other than feeding it and giving it water I do not know what else other than another pigeon would make it happy. It makes a lot of noises when no one is around which is what led me to this video. I don't know if it is happy or not. Do you still have your pigeon? If so is it still solo or have you gotten it company? It seems hard to find much help around where I live but I have been told animal rescue facilities would most likely euthanize it. So I keep trying to figure it out.

Hi! I know this is an older video but I really want to ask a question. I have been feeding this pigeon couple for months. When I am coming towards them to bring food, they make the grunting sound. Watching your video, I now know it is an alert. Are they afraid of me? They don't fly away when I approach, and just watch me fill their food up. They eat out of my hands. If they are afraid of me, is there a way for me to make them more comfortable? Any help is appreciated!!
If theyre a wild bird then the relationship will not be the same as if theyre a pet. Feeding is a vulnerable time for pigeons, they have to watch out for predators. The fact theyll eat out of your hand is great, it already shows a degree of trust :-)

i resqued a baby pigion, all were good until i made a sound "purrrrrrr" is that threat sound? he is very angry since then always trying to hit me with wings and beak hard....please tell me what sound should i make again to do friendship with him...?
He may have interpreted that as a display call. The softer nest call with your head down might show him youre not trying to challenge him. Good luck!

I just got my pigeon pet and he’s very agressive. He does the 3rd one a lot. I try to hand feed him to tell him I’m not a danger but I don’t feel like he likes me
I got my boy 3 months ago and we are still getting used to one another. Patience is key! I hand fed him everyday for a month to get him used to me and hes still very wary of me. Unfortunately i think the aggression is a male trait as mine still attacks me every time i clean his cage.
how is it possible the entire internet has no information on the most common sound you hear them make while they just sitting around. It sounds just like an owl hoot but calmer more slow and tame always the same. Coo-coo-ooooo, coo-coo-ooooo , coo-coo-oooo. like a kids toy wood flute. what does this one mean???
Apparently I can't tell the difference between a pigeon and a mourning dove. After another 30 min of wasted searching i finally found its the mournful sounding mating call of a mourning dove. crazy birds.
Today was the day I let my pigeon live in my room he start cooing right when I put him in his cage I love him lol I love his personality. Just wondering if I should put a cover over the cage at night. But I was researching and there I can't find anything that got straight to the paint can you help I would appreciate it.
As long as they get a good amount of darkness hours and some quiet at night to sleep then it should not be necessary to cover your birds. Some people may cover to create darkness if they want to reduce cooing at night but it doesnt always work!

Sorry about the big text I copied it on Amazon and just wondering if this could be good. The type of pigeon I have is a White king pigeon. I rescued him in front of my apartments. I I'm new to owning a pigeon. And I just want the best for him. Plus I'm 21 lol

My pigeon just sleeps, eats and/or poops all day long. How should I make her more active
Some pigeons/breeds really arent that active so it depends on your bird. Mine are very lazy and dont do much either!. You could try offering some enrichment to encourage foraging for treats or take them with you to different parts of the house so they can be in your company where you are. If theyre healthy and not unhappy its not necessarily an issue.
