I specialize in 2B and 4B graphite pencils for artists and my waiting list is 8 months.
Myself, I only do the hardest of the hard, any hobbyist can do the buttery soft graphite from 8H and downwards. It's the hard ones that really put your skills and your tools to the test. I have a 17th century vintage damascus pencil blade. That will shave the finest tips you'll ever see. The ancient metallurgs of the east made a steel with carbon nanostructures, and that makes proper damascus blades perfect for shaving graphite, the Carbon migrates to the blade and helps building the edge.

It's a few years later and I think I've whittled down the core pencil candidates to the single wooden splinter of splendor that could just be 'the one'. I figure, if it's worth a couple of hours, surely a half a decade is not too long to wait.

Actually, calling it pencil lead isn't necessarily a misnomer, since graphite was originally called blacklead.

this is the guy that got me into sharpening my pencils with a knife and polishing the tip into a point with sandpaper. I got a nice woodworking knife and some 600 grit sandpaper. It's nice getting lost in the technique and getting a very nice point. Also, I like this guy's sense of humor.
People who think that this is a joke must be pretty dumb. This guy is the real deal.

Sharpening a pencil by hand is sophisticated as it is practical. You have literally total control of the sharpening process and can adjust the point to your liking.

The real funny thing is all the pencils I've been using (various brands and types) keep breaking when I sharpen them with a small, manual sharpener, an electric sharpener, or the manual rotary sharpener, BUT I've turned to using a sturdy x-acto knife. Works each time.
My next business venture is to open a vintage pencil store in the middle of Shoreditch. It'll be minimally decorated like a Scandinavian hipster's whitewashed studio, and offer various custom-built sharpeners next to the terrariums. Artisanal-made small-batch pencils from organic birchwood, redwood, and beechwood will be on sale for a premium price of $20 for a pack of 12. In one year, we expect to open another shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Nice Video. Still i will use my pencil sharpener with a handle. It is very exact and sharpens pencils of all sizes. Thick ones and thin ones. The garbage is stored in a little drawer. Very practical like everything in Germany.

Hilarious. Even more hilarious is despite the obvious flavor of funny in the presentation, this guy actually has an "artisanal pencil sharpening" business. I just can't figure who would pay money for the service or postage for it.

The "lead" isn't referring to Pb (the metal), it's the lead in the drawing, as in the spearhead, as in the first point leading the rest while drawing it over the paper.
Another word that seems to have lost its meaning is a teller. Which is another word for counting. A teller stood at a counter, which was a table opposite the customer, who counted out money. He didn't really have to say much and as such, he was telling the money, not the customer. A thing foretold but never repeated.

I once taught at a school for “disturbed” kids. Any new or decent length pencil, they would snap in two. I got fed up with this and one day got all my pencils and put a handful at a time through the bandsaw. This stopped the little sh**es in their tracks, they couldn’t snap the half size pencils 🙂

$1000 for pencil-sharpening equipment! Good grief! I paid less than $892, and that included a Louis quinze ivory-handled pen-knife and a virgin Alpaca cleaning cloth that had been hand-woven by Tibetan monks. My shopping lists and post-it notes are now works of art. Pencil sharpening has become a hobby of mine, almost to the point of obsession, and I find it even more refreshing and stimulating now that I've just been given permission to use sharp bladed implements, albeit under close supervision. Anyway, that was after a misunderstanding when I fell out with my psychiatrist, but I'm fine now and he has partially regained the ability to move his eye-lids.

I spent half an hour trying to find this video.
Still not sure if the guy is trolling, but when I did Tech Drawing at school (many, many years ago) we were taught how to sharpen our pencils in a similar manner and had to sand to a wedge shaped end to ensure crisp, clean lines.
