  • This is a very in-depth instructional video on how to switch out the crankshaft position sensor for the 2nd generation (1994-1999) Dodge 5.2 or 5.9l engines. This video goes over what other instructional videos have left out when changing the CPS. I give you tips on how to locate it, what you must do before removing it and where to find the harness, plus how to replace it. Please bare with me as I do tend to be long winded but I am very descriptive, which is necessary when working on a vehicle, if you care to have the job done correctly and easily. Thank you. Please feel free to leave comments that may help me or anyone else on this job. FYI another suggestion is to use a Mopar CPS because I purchased an O'Reilly after market and had to change it 2x, which I still had shifting issues before I finally spent the little extra on the Mopar.

    My 95 Dodge Ram was cutting out intermittently. I tuned it up. New plugs, wires, dist, ignition coil, Cam sensor, etc. It was running better, but it would still start acting up after about 15 minutes of driving. Sometimes it would stumble and stutter, sometimes it would just die like someone flipped a switch. I finally changed the crank sensor and I've run it for several days now with no issues!
    *I suggest spending the extra money and getting an original Mopar sensor!

      Great!!! I had replaced all that you did as well...also had to use tiny thin washers as shima for the sensor bc it was getting rubbed by the fly wheel but the shima dis the trick (not mentioned in this video). Thanks for noting it's in everyone's best interest to use MOPAR when it comes to this or any sensors and electrical parts

    Best way to get transmission dipstick bracket off?

  • @markmayhew4435
    @markmayhew4435 Před 2 lety +2

    A lot of unesGot mine out in about 10-min. With out doing all that. Take off the air breather. Just reach behind the motor with a small flat-head screwdriver. Clean the little Allen head holes out. Reach back behind the motor with a 8-in extension and Allen 1/4-in ,, and ratchet. Unplugged the sensor. It is done. It is a tight fit. But you don't have to undo the dipstick for the tranny. Or any other stuff.

      Yeah I did get it figured out. Thanks for taking the time to respond though. Got to do the plentium plate on my other Dodge. Been trying to find someone to order the one that is aluminum. You wouldn't have a hook up on which ones are the best to use would you. I'm also going to replace all the gaskets on the motor except for the head gaskets. If so I would appreciate it. Thanks again for responding. Have a blessed day.

    I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 ive chaged all the sensors it runs fine in the cold but when the truck warms up it sputtering and misfire and no power when driving and i changed the distributor cap and the cam and pull up sensor u think my crankshaft sensor is bad

    • @karnee26
      @karnee26  Před 9 měsíci

      Before doing the CSPS, make sure your coil pack is clean (sand paper it), check the pig tail (add dielectric grease), be sure all your wires on the distributor are tight on the points and on the plugs. Then check the pig tail to the CSPS bc it runs behind the distributor, it could be pinched or spliced. I also had my throttle sensor cause the same issues you're speaking of, so check that as well. If all those things pan out, then you may want to replace the CSPS. Fair warning, you will need to order the Mopar one bc the after markets will constantly give you issues. Good luck.

    • @karnee26
      @karnee26  Před 2 lety +1

      If you go from the wheel well, it won't be as difficult as it seems....once you know where it is, it's the pigtail that will be the hardest to get over to the drivers side and be sure to snake it without getting it tangled in with the distributor. That's why it's best to leave the old one there and trace the new one with the old one's path, using zip ties!!! Best of luck!

    Tuff to get at but it can be removed from the top with a socket, a short extension and a couple u-joints.... not ez but easier than removing all the other parts. Just my experience....

      karnee26 easy to change crank shaft position sensor just had to go get plastic keepers for the plastic under fenders, but was easy to fix, maybe took 30 minutes only cause it was first time to change out, I did put extra flex wire protector on the wires due to fact that truck stays in barn and for some reason those wires get chewed up by mice.

    • @karnee26
      @karnee26  Před 4 lety +3

      @@autrytom thanks for sharing on your experience! I have a tip that will help you keep mice and rats from chewing or nesting in your rig! I had an old timer come into the parts store that I worked at for years, he had so many tips to share with me and one was how to keep mice and rats out of your vehicle! Put BOUNCE original dryer sheets all thru the engine bay and throughout your vehicle (inside and out). I think if you look during my video, you just may see some shoved into spots, including around hoses, wires, hydraulic lines and I especially stuffed them into my hood instillation! I've always lived where there are field mice and wood rats, so one day I was talking with my regular old timer about replacing chewed wires. He told me the tip, I went on my break and bought BOUNCE original dryer sheets (he said, they have to be those exactly because they dislike the smell). This was years ago that I tried it and I have NEVER had an issue ever again. I replace the sheets ever few months, he never told me how often to change them out, so I do it about every 3 months. Also, to get rid of mice and rats from your house, Irish Spring bar soap! I crawled under my cabin and shoved Bounce dryer sheets all around and threw Irish Spring bar soap under it, too. Since I did that, I haven't had 1 mouse or wood rat since! Gotta love the old timers! I may make a video covering that information.

      The Traveling Hornet yes

    • @karnee26
      @karnee26  Před 4 lety +3

      Sorry I haven't replied sooner... answer is yes, it definitely can cause a no start issue. However, there are signs when a CPS is failing, the biggest one is sputtering start, the engine just cranking without starting (as if it were a starter issue or fuel pump issue) and a really heavy transfer of gears (ie. An good transition from 1-2 but bucking into higher gears, especially 3-4, 4-overdrive). The aftermarket CPS is fairly inexpensive but if that isn't your issue, you can't return an electrical part (maybe you can at AutoZone). I'd check all other simple things first (as I'm sure you know). If you're certain it maybe the the CPS, then go for it. Here is what happened after this video...the new aftermarket CPS from a parts store was put in and it ran fine for about a week, then all the symptoms returned. I warrantied it out and put another new one on. Then the same damn thing happened and I was heated. So, I decided not to get it from a aftermarket parts store (crappy O'Reilly's) and I ordered a Mopar direct from a dealership. Since then, never had a problem again. There are vehicles that are just too temperamental when it comes to electrical parts and it wants it's original installed. Same thing with my mother's Towncar, it did not like the aftermarket EGR solenoid. I installed 2 aftermarket and it ran good for a few days each time, then shit out. I finally knew it wanted Motorcraft and it runs great! I say, try they aftermarket parts from a parts store, if your rig starts, you know it is the CPS! If you have problems after you've installed it (assuming it has started because that's what you need to first find out), then you can always order a Mopar and then return the one from the parts store. Best wishes and I hope it goes easy for you.
