As a dermatologist, I know melasma, or hyperpigmentation in general, is a really tricky skin condition to treat. And it's something I've been dealing with throughout my pregnancy and while breastfeeding. So in this morning skincare routine, I share the skincare products I've been using to help treat my melasma from ISDIN, NATURIUM, Aveeno, Maelove, and more.

I mix the ISDIN tinted and non-tinted versions to get the right shade for me, as alone it is too warm-- or orange for me, but mixing the two works great. Also I have tried the Naturium Tranexamic Acid, but it burned my face; however, I have it added into my prescription from the Agency and have no issues with it.

The Maelove Glow Maker is great, but I'm partial to the Timeless Vitamin C with ferulic acid.
I have some stubborn melasma, and have even tried the Cyspera with zero luck. Done laser treatments, but the dark spots always come back. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to hydroquinone.
I've been using Retin-A since my 20s (not during pregnancy or nursing), and I'm 63. A great product for preventing wrinkles. I never go a day without sunscreen.
    Thanks, Dr. Sam.

I love aveeno calm & restore face wash & their serum. The only complaint I have is the dropper is absolutely horrible!!!! I love the fact that it's unscented! My skin doesn't react to a very light scent & neither does my nose.

Replenix Moisturizer looks so good def gonna try it. I tried the aveeno cleanser and maelove vitamin c serum, I loved the cleanser and serum is decent (as with all water based L-Ascorbic acid vitamin c serums, they smell bad, sting a bit and go bad pretty quickly) but results were good.
Products in my routine at the moment:
    Cetaphil gentle cleanser (Affordable, Effective)
    Prescription tretinoin cream
Drunk Elephant TLC framboos serum (chemical exfoliant, best I've tried imo)
Cerave Moisturising lotion (Affordable, Light yet hydrating, full of ceramides)
Ardent Berry Molecular active vitamin c serum (its from a small brand, really expensive but lasts a long time, results are amazing, made such a difference with my melasma. its water-free which makes it a bit oily but stable)
Clinique CityBlock SPF 50 (Mix of Chemical and mineral sunscreens, has a peachy tint, layers well, doesn't burn my eyes)

Hi, thank you for your advise.
It is soo important to have experts advicing on every field in life!.
I have very textured (I have dark overgrouths on my face, scalp and around my body) dark, hyperpigmented, course, big pored skin (I'm Spanish, 55 and never protected against sun) but though I have dry skin, I always get millia - I used to suffer a lot of acne when young.
I thought that melasma treatment might help, but find that you use far to many layers... Each of my pores will have a brunch with sooo many lovely creams...
I need a daily, super light moisturiser lotion and sunscreen...
And a night moisturiser lotion too.. Very light and fluid...
    What would you recommend?.
I was also just about to start with a niacinamide serum in the morning and a vitamin c in the evening (so that they don't interfere with each otrer).
Would that be a good plan?.
    Thank you for your support.
I use light scrub in the shower and find it very smoothing and not abrasive at all!. But I don't rub very harshly... Just to help smoothen all the bummps on my skin...
    I leave you now.
You do such a great job!.
    Bless you!.

So, I started doing this routine when this video came out (well, it took about 4 days for Naturium delivery etc, but close). I’ve been using the Skinceuticals VitC, Naturium, and Meladerm (followed by Elta shield sunscreen) religiously for about two months every morning.
My melasma is almost completely gone. It was actually a great reminder that skincare takes patience, because for several weeks there was zero change. Then one day it began to exponentially improve. Thank you!!!!
    I wonder if I should continue Naturium/Meladerm now that it’s gone…?

I have also been hearing about good things about tumeric oil as a non-prescription product for dark spots. Any comments or suggestions? I just stopped using hydroquinone and
just want a simple one "serum/cream" item to use every night. What is your "must have item" besides sunscreen. I already use a koji cleanser, tinted sunscreen, heliocare, and other sunscreens.

Great video, Dr. Ellis. However, many of your products are quite expensive, especially using long term. Do you have any alternative products that are more affordable but still efficacious? Thanks so much!!

Good information thank you. Music is annoying considering the amount of valuable information in the video.

How long does the Azelaic Acid takes. I have been using the 15% twice a day and don’t see any improvement on my face. In addition I use Retain A at night and of course my Vitamin C by Timeless which is 20% vitamins + E Ferulic Acid Serum. I also use the 10% Niacinamide by Inkey List. I am waiting for a break through to have even tone skin. Finally, I never forget to use my sunscreen although I am still waiting to find one I love.

Is it safe to use alpha arbutin in daily skin care routine? I have read that it can be hydrolysed in hydroquinone and can be harmful if used prolonged

Hi Dr Ellis. Do I have to worry about photosensitivity when using Azelaic acid?
