Foggy Dew fait la chronique de l'Insurrection de Pâques 1916. Elle a été écrite en 1919 par le chanoine Charles O'Neill et la musique provient d'un air traditionnel arrangé par Carl Hardebeck.
En 1800, l'Acte d'Union de l'Irlande avec la Grande-Bretagne dissout le parlement de Dublin et crée une zone de libre-échange. Les famines du XIXème siècle déciment la population et provoquent un exode massif. Le sentiment anti-britannique se renforce et l'Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), est fondée en 1858 dans le but de préparer un soulèvement général en Irlande.
James Connolly, chef de l'Irish Labour Party et les chefs syndicaux républicains fondent l'Irish Citizen Army (ICA) pour protéger les participants des grandes grèves de 1913. Le 16 janvier 1916, le conseil suprême de l'IRB, en accord avec l'ICA, préparent une insurrection générale. Eoin Mac Neill le chef des Irish Volunteers décide de soutenir l'insurrection. Mais le 20 avril, le cargo allemand qui apportait les armes, est arraisonné par un patrouilleur britannique. L'insurrection est repoussée de quelques jours.
Le lundi de Pâques 24 avril 1916, 120 membres de l'ICA et 700 de l'Irish Volunteers Force, menés par Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, Tom Clarke, Seán Mac Diarmada, Éamon de Valera, Joseph Plunkett et Constance Markievicz pour la brigade féminine, défilent à Dublin. Ils occupent des bâtiments stratégiques dont la Poste centrale. Des armes sont dérobées à l'armée britannique.
Patrick Pearse proclame la République devant une foule dubitative. Les assauts de l'armée britannique sont repoussés et plusieurs casernes sont même attaquées. Mais les insurgés ne prennent pas le Castel, siège de l'autorité britannique et centre des communications. Le maréchal John French ordonne le transfert de 4 divisions.
A Dublin se multiplient les batailles de rue tandis que les Britanniques bombardent les bâtiments aux mains des Républicains. Au bout de 5 jours, les insurgés sont acculés. Le 29 avril Patrick Pearse, président du gouvernement provisoire, décrète l'arrêt des combats, la reddition sans condition est signée le même jour.
La répression Britannique est implacable : près de 5 000 personnes arrêtées, 90 peines de mort prononcées. Patrick Pearse est fusillé le 3 mai. James Connolly, est arraché de l'hôpital, posé sur une chaise et exécuté le 12 mai. Roger Casement est pendu. Éamon de Valera échappe à la peine capitale, du fait de sa nationalité américaine et de l'intervention de l'ambassadeur des États-Unis.
L'insurrection de Pâques 1916 fut un échec militaire mais entraîna un renversement de l'opinion et un courant de sympathie envers le Sinn Féin qui remportera les élections de 1918. Elle est le premier pas vers la République d'Irlande, la guerre d'indépendance et le conflit nord-irlandais.
100 ans plus tard, l'évènement est commémoré comme le fondement de la création de l'État irlandais. - Hudba

This song is really about the 1916, Easter Rising against the British. The words are "The World did gaze with deep amaze" these brave men were fighting one of the Greatest Empires in history. 🇮🇪🇲🇽 They were Irish men who fought for Mexico as well.
