Abandoned- Horror Hostel and 2 old houses! Random Adelaide explores :-)

  • Hey explorers and house lovers! :-)
I have been flat out working and preparing for a few upcoming things but here in this video are 3 location around Adelaide which I have explored and had on file for a little while.
The first is a creepy dark dank Hostel or what seems to have been a very cheap accommodation type set up. Occupants seem to have just got up and left or squatters have were using it or both!
The building is primarily an old federation Villa adapted and extended to suit the needs.
The second and third explores are what would have been beautiful homes but are now old creepy ones! The 2nd one a 40`s home and the 3rd a late 30`s to early 40`s.
Hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching :-)
PS- if you are seeing ads at the beginning of my videos that is totally CZcams doing this as my channel IS NOT monetized. CZcams have altered the rules again and can put adds up and then it is up to the creator as to weather they want a cut of the proceeds.
The only other times an add will appear on any of my videos is when a snippet of music has been identified by CZcams algorithms under copyright and the owner allows it on the condition they place a few ads during the video.

I don't know why, but "That's probably the most basic mantel I've ever seen..." literally made me 'lol' when I paid attention to the little stick of wood adhered to that wall! 😁

  • @andrewhallett-patterson9778

As a uni student of the 80's, I can reveal exactly what the orginal purpose of the villa was and the later modifications and additions. Uni SA purchased the villa in 1985 as a external office complex to facilitate the operation of numerous courses supplied by external providers. This was more of a experiment to observe if cost saving were applicable. This failed to generate any noticeable savings, and was terminated in 1989. The building was gutted but retained for paper record storage until 1992 when the decision to purchase the neighbouring property, originally a mechanical engineering workshop, and build cheap accommodation for overseas students. This comprehensive redevelopment undertaking, which gutted the villa, clearing the workshop, internal and external construction initialed and completed in 1995. Uni SA divested itself of all accommodation investments in 2001. The property was purchased by private investors, changing ownership several times, marketed directly to overseas students via flyers in Chinese dialogue left at UniSA, before complete abandonment nearly 2 years ago..... and my participation ends here. All great explore as usual Paul. Oh, and i agree....the shed is fully empty ! 👍👍🇭🇲

The first property sure was creepy. The original late Federation home would have been once a lovely family home though, before being turned into a hostel. Both the 2nd and 3rd properties were typical late 1940s houses and with many of the internal features remaining. With so many houses being left to ruin and demolished, unfortunately Adelaide will become unrecognisable. Thanks again for another interesting explore of more houses before they are lost forever.

I find myself talking to you as you go through! Like in the last house, I wanted to tell you to move that sofa out of the way so you could easily run to the front door without tripping over it if you needed to make a speedy exit! And when wardrobes are moved away from the wall, I start saying urgently, “Look behind there first to be sure there’s nobody there!” LOL Pretty sure you wouldn’t want me along - I’d ruin the fun for sure!

When I see these old hostels, I wonder what the circumstances of those who lived there. I worked at Hillcrest Psych Hospital ( as a nurse...think ' One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest ) back in the '70's. Once it was demolished, many of its patients would have been 'housed' in these kinds of facilities. They simply didn't have anywhere to go where they could be cared for. Swapped one kind of institution for another :(

"Horror Hostel", alright! Thanks for another explore, UI. That first house was likely an impressive Edwardian villa in its day. Interesting that the mantles were still there to be salvaged. I guess authentic ones are worth a lot these days. I've seen that verandah tiling (terrazzo?) in a lot of houses built in the early 1900s. It must have been very fashionable. PS That's the worst water damage I can recall seeing.

Places like the first one I just can’t watch. They feel so disgusting and I actually find myself with my hand over my mouth and nose because I keep feeling like they must smell foul and any minute that smell’s going to hit me! Irrational, I know...
Loved the second home. It had a light, cozy feel to it as if a happy family had lived there. Loved the design in the sliding glass cupboard doors in the kitchen! And I think the little teddy was tied to the string on the light so a child could find and turn his/her own light on and off.
I liked the third house, too - very neutral vibes. I’m wondering if the “gathering room of the squatters” was the dining room and the kitchen cabinets at one end were built in as a kind of economical server/china cabinet.
Love your videos and look forward to them every week!

When I see that first property, the hostel, it does not seem creepy to me, it reminds me of barracks I lived in at Fort Riley, Kansas, USA, when I was in the Army in the early 90's. They started out as large squad bays, and we sub-divided them into little rooms ourselves so we could have our own little areas. It looks bad to outsiders, but when you go from 10 guys in bunks in a room with no privacy at all to having your own little area, it makes a big difference in morale. I have to imagine that students coming from overseas probably found those little rooms quite nice, especially if they came from a country not known for privacy. I have to agree with you, that floor in the bathroom of the last house was awesome, I would love some tile work like that in my bathroom!!

Wow first place was creepy as all heck. Got the feeling something was watching you.
Love watching your explores and documenting these old beauties.
I just don’t understand why they are tearing all these character houses down and not invest in preserving them instead. Granted some houses are too far gone.

  • @wendymcfadyen-allerby6142

As a viewer I found the hostel had a story to tell and through your camera, and that of the other two houses you did. Thank you.

I Wonder if the hostel was for backpackers, or Transitional housing for Homeless?Done for at any road. The first thing I saw in both houses to date them were the old original Venetian Blinds on the window. Floral pattern carpet as well. Shades of a Raymond Chandler Marlowe mystery. (My favourite was " The Little Sister")another small slice of history fades out. Admire your nerve at times,I'd carry a police whistle. Cheers.

All three places had their good points . Place one was very odd . You are right it probably started out as a house and was later decided into a rooming house by the looks of things . I would guess why no one lives here anymore is because the place was not up to fire code .
Second home wow much loved family residence , however it is obvious who ever was living there last did not feel safe . Oh and I think that was a shrine of a sort so the residents where probably South or East Asian but from the looks of things South asian sifts . Would of been a lovely family home . I do not know if that glass on the cupboards was second hand or not , however I am sure that symbol on the glass is from the Masonic Temple . I noticed the one light shade on the roof was coloured green .
The last place wow . Some of the wood work was impressive.
Sad to know all these homes will be torn down.

The first one is just awful. Imagine living there and working or studying 😩 The second one looked so sad, as I imagined the little old lady or gentleman living their till the end. It had a touch of gentle grandma about it, and had barely been touched from original, which was charming. That 3rd one was also charming and ohhh that dough bowl in the kitchen hutch 🥰❤️❤️🤩🙏 I hope dearly it gets saved. Thanks as always and stay safe x

What a creepy boarding house! It would have been awful in those tiny rooms, the whole place had a feeling of despair. The second house looked like it would have been nice in its day and the third house was unusual, I have to disagree about the colour scheme in the bathroom, that set my teeth on edge, I bet the floor design didn’t help if you were feeling sick! All different and interesting houses, great video, always look forward to seeing your next one. xxx

Loved the beautiful bushes and flowers in the first house, after the hostel explore. Just wondering do they still have youth hostels in Adelaide, like they use to have in the 70's and 80's? My husband and I use to sometimes stay at hostels if they were nice and clean. I guess air b&b has taken over now.

    Bonjour d'Occitanie (France)
