    In this video I show you what happens when you cool a giant 2" steel ball down to -321°F in liquid nitrogen and then put it in water! It instantly forms clear ice around the ball and starts to bubble. I explain why this happens and also I explain that ice formation is actually exothermic.

    I should have mentioned it in the video but the water was close to 0C so most of the energy into the ball was from the freezing and not the water thermal energy. Although some of the energy going into the ball was thermal energy from the water as some have noted. The second experiment shows the exothermic nature of water freezing a little better.

    I was curious, so you know how if you get a towel wet, you can wring it out? But it's still damp. So I figured, If you wring out a towel, can you use a hydraulic press to squeeze out the rest of the water leaving the towel dry again?
    Please like so the Action Lab can see this. I hope you can do the experiment.

    • @ongbonga9025
      @ongbonga9025 Před 5 lety +2

      The answer is yes, it would dry the towel out. You can do this at home by replacing a towel with a small sponge, the type you might do the washing up with, and replacing the hydraulic press with your hand. Get it soaking wet, then squeeze it in the palm of your hand into a ball. Hey Presto! A dry sponge.

    • @ongbonga9025

      It'd be more fun if he dried tomatoes by using a hydraulic press. Sun dried tomatoes? Pfft, I'm not waiting.

    • @ongbonga9025
      @ongbonga9025 Před 5 lety

      @@dsp4392 I doubt it. I don't know for sure, but water is incompressible, while fabric is not. As long as water is present in the towel, it will surely protect the fabric, simply because the fabric will have a great deal more give than the water.
      I think we can get it very nearly dry. Totally dry? With a perfectly flat press, and enough force, maybe in theory. I really don't know. But it'll be practically dry, like as dry as a towel absorbing minuscule amounts of humidity from the air.

    • @dsp4392
      @dsp4392 Před 5 lety

      @@ongbonga9025 Water definitely has low-compressibility, unlike the air contained in fabric, but fabric isn't infinitely compressible either. Once the air is fully compressed or expelled, only solid molecules (cotton, wool, polyester, etc.) remain, which aren't any more compressible than water. Depending on the setup, this will usually cause the fabric to tear apart as water in the middle of the towel pushes on the fully compressed fabric. watch?v=_QSJkwyjX4w actually shows the experiment being done, and while the poster claims their towel is "fully dry", it never actually is. As he moves up to thicker towels, it gets increasingly difficult to expel the water. Again, you can get a towel reasonably dry (as you said "we can get it very nearly dry"), but you'll never "squeeze out the rest of the water" using a press, at least not as effectively as heat and a bit of patience does.

If that was true when a lake freezes over it would warm the water or the air and it not the case

    I think this would be an interesting phenomena to explore for your channel. I work in a biology lab, where we frequently need to make agarose gels, which involves boiling the solution so that the agarose can dissolve into the water easily. Before pooring gels into molds, I cool the agarose by running water over the bottle, and I notice that the water in the solution begins to boil rapidly if the container is sealed. My hypothesis is that the cooling of the air temperature in the bottle lowers the pressure, allowing the solution to boil, despite the fact that it is cooling off.

    Very interesting this think of it this way. Makes perfect sense when you know nothing is cold only the absence of heat is when there is cold so idk. It’s also interesting to think about water freeezing as a chemical reaction. Putting energy into it until the reaction just happens and it makes sense it releases energy idk just never thought about it this way and so this is cool

    This confirms what I've learned in school about specific melt heat and specific heat of vaporization. (note: I don't know what these 2 terms are called in English)

    Makes sense. Since energy can’t be destroyed, that heat has to go somewhere. Normally it would dissipate in the air, or released into the container holding the ice. Since you added the thermometer you got a way to measure the heat that was being released.

    I always liked how if you count 1-3 the 2 is like a transition and makes the 1 look more like a 3 by adding a curve but it still has a straight end '1 2 3' but on youtube, it doesn't show the 1's flat at the bottom.
