- Tallinn is a lovely city with a UNESCO World Heritage Site old town that's amazingly well preserved. It's also a city that many people just visit for short trips. This is a guide for how to maximize your visit to Tallinn...if you only have four hours to spare!

This video covers some basic history of Tallinn, dating back to the 13th century and the Hanseatic League, and then gives you suggestions for where you can go if you just have one day or even half a day in the city.

- The Town Hall Square, with the Raeapteek (Europe's oldest pharmacy) and Old Thomas
- Tallinn Old Town, including St Catherine's Passage, the Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform, and the Patkuli Vieweing Platform
- Other things to keep an eye out for in Tallinn Old Town, such as street art, the Lucky Chimney Sweeper, the Chopin Bench, and the Black Angus sculpture
- Kiek in the Kök, a famous tower turned museum
- The Seaplane Harbor Museum

- Gorgeous Kadriorg Palace and Kadriorg Park

I’m definitely visiting the KGB museum when I go to Tallinn. My girlfriend and I are taking the ferry from Helsinki and staying overnight, so we will have more time. In the morning we fly to Stockholm, Sweden, hopefully we will get to meet you 😊
Well, I do hang around in the city quite a bit and there are several people who've said hi when I'm out and about - so it's feasible! And yeah, going to Tallinn from Helsinki sounds great. I hear that's a real party boat though, so be forewarned! :D

But seriously, I would recommend coming to Tallinn outside the tourist season. The tourists just make everything look like a hotel check in zone. Winter is not a good time either, it can be very cold, metaphorically also. But early autumn would be my pick. Still nice and warm, but already 90% less tourists and you will actually feel the soul of the place. And walk around late in the evening, and go beyond the tourist traps. And just take your time. Do not rush through Tallinn in the height of the tourist season: you will get absolutely no feeling of the place.
And while already in Tallinn, go a little bit further. We have a lot of peaceful nature: 50-75% of our territory is forest (depending on calculation technique). We also have a lot of swamps, covered with wooden trails (so very safe and comfortable), a lot of nice and interesting accommodation opportunities in nature. And a lot of cute small towns, many of them also have medieval fortresses, very well preserved. Go to the islands as well. You can take a bus from Tallinn to Kuressaare (capital of the biggest islands Saaremaa).
All in all, Estonia is worth a little bit of your time. It will be worth it. We cherish our nature. All coastline and coasts of rivers and lakes is public property, by law. We have much respect for nature, it i sin our upbringing already: to give nature its space, including all the birds and animals. It is by law forbidden to disturb birds or animals. And we have bird and animal holograms in our passports, including the wolf, our national animal.
However, if you plan to visit Estonian nature, summer would probably be the best time. We are a northern country. And Septembers already can be quite cold. Also, be prepared, there is nothing monumental in our nature. No mountains, nothing phenomenal in itself. Like I said, it is peaceful and there is a lot of it, quite untouched. And approachable, meaning not private property everywhere.
But if you come here just to get drunk and yell with other drunk people, better go to Riga :)
Those are some amazing tips - and a great reflection on the difference between Estonia and other places! I think the recommendation to see more outside of Tallinn itself is great too. I've noted several places that I'd love to explore more later on when time permits :)

Very nice! I too have a passion for travel and collect Fridge Magnets because they aren’t heavy and cumbersome. After many years of traveling getting too many souvenirs has turned me into a hoarder! 😂At least fridge magnets are manageable.
I always want to buy so much stuff when abroad, but then I remember my little 46 sqm apartment, and it's like "ah well, a fridge magnet is good. I still have space on my fridge" :D

Wow, well done! I visited Talling while on a short trip from Helsinki, and also had a few hours spare. I don't think we got out of old town but mostly because we got sucked into this huge museum with underground tunnels - which was very impressive but also very time-consuming. I suppose given that it was Winter time it wasn't such a bad choice. Wish someone would give me a castle with gardens ;(
Haha, I was there in winter once as well, and it was reeeally cold! I wish I had found that museum back then.
Isn't it always like that? The castles and the gardens are given to people who don't appreciate it ;D

Tallinn has it all, modern, old and hipsters convention. Thank you for all the history, it was quite interesting. The stone buildings and towers look absolutely amazing well except the McDonalds beside the two towers, but then again maybe the have a McTower sandwich there ? I think you could have spent a few days there to see some of the sights and most of all sample the food and taste a few types of beer, just for research of course. McTower sandwich! That'd be something eh... But yeah if I hadn't been on a quick visit I think it would have been really nice to just relax and enjoy the town more. Especially enjoy the beer... Alas, I had to enjoy beer by going back to the punk cruise when I was there! That worked quite well as well :D Cheers!
The Mc Donalds there is an awful place. Even for people who actually like it and want to go have a burger or something. It is just invaded by Russian preteenagers who use the place for free wifi and to charge their phones. So herds of them will just pour in, sit at other people"s (!!!!) tables, order nothing and charge their phones. Then all their friends will herd in, doing the same thing. Why Mc Donalds allows for people to just be there like that (while paying customers cannot come because there is no space) is beyond me. Why they cannot charge their phones at home, is also beyond me. We do have electricity, for gods sake. So, yes, the Mc Donalds there is absolutely horrible. If you want a quick bite of fast food in Tallinn Old town, I would suggest one of the Burger Kings (particularly the one at the railway station). Not many people, no harassment of preteens and you get your fast food. (I do not work there, just saying) Avoid the MacDonald in Old Town.

I'm going to Helsinki, and going to go Tallinn, Estonia. My hands are full with trying to learn Finnish, but I find the cultural and linguistic similarities interesting. There's also the Russian cultural center I want to check out.
Yeah, I've heard that Finnish and Estonian is really close (even though I can't say for sure myself), and the culture is very similar to the Nordic countries as well. That sounds interesting! I didn't have a look at that center, but it could be fascinating
Please go to Russia to see Russian stuff. Please, please, please. There is so much Russia(n) in Russia. Why look for it in other countries, which, on top of everything, never asked for it.

That's a fair point! I've gone from trying to just take pretty shots to trying to find interesting shots over time, come to think of it.. So that makes sense!

Mission Impossible : 4 hours in Tallinn Vagabond is here! I wish to give you a shortened title. However, you probably broke a new record as a guide. I could not complete my presentations within 4 hours. I am a bit envious right now. How effective you are. Yes, sadly you were not able to travel to every place in city. However, you made a great effort. You didn't forget your community. It could be a struggle for you while traveling and recording in 4 hours. Thank you so much. Also, KGB Museum was fascinating. When is the best time to visit and the weather is good? May?
Personally I'd say summer actually, but I love hot weather! May or September is probably good if you want a bit cooler
Depends on what you are looking for. Summer is nicer and warmer but also very touristy. And the place loses its soul, it will feel like a hotel. September is still warm, first half anyway. And it will not feel like a hotel anymore, the crowds are gone, more or less. Another good time would be before or during Christmas. Especially if there is snow, which is becoming more and more rare, unfortunately. The worst time to come would be January till March. Cold, empty, hostile, probably no snow, just a lot of slippery rain (which is disgusting). Autumn, though, can be nice. I like our late autumns: rent a cabin in the woods, take your dog(s) and just be there and watch nature getting ready to sleep. I like the smell of rotting leaves in November, but most people do not not like it, I have noticed.
The point is that weather in Estonia is quite unpredictable. For example, in February it can be minus 25 and snowy, or it can be plus 8 and raining. And all in one day.
In June there are a lot of festivals, hence a lot of stuff like concerts, also free ones. You might want to keep your eyes open for Vanalinna päevad (Old Town days). There will be a lot of concerts, excursions etc, also in English, some of it free. And in June everything blossoms and smells really nice (as opposed to the smell of rotting leaves of November) and the birds sing like hell in June. Almost to the point that might make it hard to sleep at night. Again, might be worth renting a cabin and spending some time in nature where you can really feel it. the good thing about Estonia and Tallinn is that nature is everywhere. It will not take hours to get out of civilisation. Or just rent a house/apartment in a naturely part of town, like Nõmme or Pirita. The city centre would be 20 minutes bus ride away but you would be in nature basically.
So, it depends on what you like. But January, February, March.. there is nothing here. Just a lot of empty nothingness and cold and slippery, very badly cleaned streets. So avoid that

Thank you! :D And haha, it's because I was on a punk cruise from Stockholm to Tallinn, and we just had like 5-6 hours ashore or something like that! I thought "okay, I'll take a bit more time because I'm filming...so let's call it 4 hours!"
Seems to be a lovely city that is well worth a visit. I was wondering whether there were still traces of the Soviet era, and then you enlightened me. I'm not a fan of wanton graffiti, seen too much of it in Rome, Berlin and Athens, a total scourge in my opinion.
It's actually really nice! Not the biggest place, but very varied and cozy. And yes indeed, there are definitely still signs of the Soviet times... Agreed about the graffiti. Just seems like such a waste to have such excessive tagging everywhere :/

@@ragnarlaine4065 The buildings that were built during the Soviet occupation are a sign of Soviet times. Note the word occupation there.
Yes, these buildings are still there. But you do not have to go to these parts of the town. They are not everywhere. Also, they have changed a lot, they have been made a lot nicer. Still, I wish they were just taken down. I do not want them there. Eventually they probably will be replaced, time will do its job. Wether that will be in my lifetime, I dont know. I am 50, women in my family live long, so I might have half a century still to go. I might see their end.
Tallinn is a nice place. I would recommend doing some homework and thinking it through, where you want to go, which parts of town. I would also recommend parts of town that have these wooden buildings and gardens. Some well preserved, some more old style .... But such regions are interesting. Kalamaja is one of them (right next to the Old Town, two tram stations or a 5 minute walk), also Pelgulinn.
There is not so much graffiti. Again, unless you are looking for it specifically. So, like I said, do some homework and decide beforehand, which parts of town to go to. In addition to the Old Town, of course.
As for graffiti, there is quite a lot of really nice graffiti, really beautiful.

Not worth it, in my opinion. I am a Tallinner. Trust me, they are nothing special. You will just spend like 1,5 hours in a cellar. That is it. It is not medieval, they are from the Swedish era.

I think you got Bald&Bankrupt totally wrong! He never does a touristic video of the highlights of the place he is visiting! Mostly he get "lost" in not touristic parts and get weird-incredible-surreal-authentic experiences with the locals, plus he was interested in visiting former ex soviet architectures and that's why he doesn't show the medioeval beauty of Tallinn Old Town centre. Ps.: Tondi forever!!!
I think the two aren't mutually exclusive. I watched his video, and he did complain about the lack of things to see and do in Tondi...but I also think he had a great time exploring. I think it stuck with people because he's actually fond of out-of-the-way places like that

Easy: just do not come here for 4 hours. You will just leave with the thirst for more. So leave the "quick tours", stop running and take it easy.
Secondly: there is nothing wrong with pigeons. They are birds, with the same right to live as everyone else. As for tourists, they actually get on my nerves. Pigeons do not.
