Yet, if I remember correctly, the narrative device is that of the old gumshoe detective films - that the protagonist is usually in every scene driving the plot.

One of the most quotable movies of all time. It was a stroke of genius to take oldschool mystery/noir tropes and put them through the filter of modern-day California. All the twists the plot takes (Lebowski isn't actually rich, what happened to the briefcase, etc.) don't really matter because the mystery of what happened to Bunny was never important, and instead of a cast of suspicious characters it's just a bunch of weird California stereotypes.

The broadcast television edit of this film spawned several meme worthy quotes as well. The scene where Walter is smashing the windows in the red Corvette, he's yelling "This is what happens you FIND A STRANGER IN THE ALPS!"- John Goodman ADR'd that line and others so it's actually his voice.

Even my local bar started showing the film once a year and everyone would attend in dressing gowns and drinking white russians.

Since I left a long rambling comment on Patreon, I won't fully repeat it here, other than to say I really hope you watch more Coen brothers films. I think you would especially love 'Fargo' and 'Raising Arizona' (John Goodman is so good in that one and his first of many appearances in their films). Also, their film 'No Country for Old Men' is my favorite film of all time (well, for now) and it's a master class in every aspect of filmmaking. Definitely NOT a comedy, though, but so suspenseful. My ex-wife (well, the second one) and I had our birthday party at the bowling alley where they shot this film before they sadly - and stupidly - tore it down. They gave us a bowling pin for all the guest to sign that I still have.

Maude Lebowski (Julienne Moore) is speaking with what’s called a Mid-Atlantic accent, which is an artificial accent that blends British and American accents (hence the name). It was used a lot in movies from the 1930s and ’40s to mark a character as being highly educated and/or upper class, and since it was just an auditory trope, it basically no longer exists (one character from the later seasons of _Bojack Horseman_ uses it, but that’s because she’s a parody of Hildegard Johnson (Rosalind Russell) in _His Girl Friday_ from 1940).
The dream sequence with all the bowling imagery is _also_ a throwback to that era. The big dance number with dozens of women in fancy costumes was very popular in those days, and you can see the specific “camera dives between a bunch of women’s legs” shot at around the 1 minute mark of this trailer for _42nd Street_ from 1933: czcams.com/video/AHxPXq5J_mQ/video.html

One of the things that make this movie so original is that it's basically a Raymond Chandler 1940s film noir detective mystery, only instead of a hard-edged and driven private detective in a black suit, the hero is a lazy ex-hippie who wanders though the movie stoned and drunk, not having a clue what's going on most of the time and not really caring. It's such a unique combination of character and genre that there's really nothing else like it.
Regarding George's comment about the script, 99.9% of what you see on the screen was scripted beforehand - the Coens have a very clear vision for how they want their movies to look and they hate it when actors adlib. All of the dialogue in this movie, including the "dudes" and "umms" and "uhhs", is all in the script. The only line they let Jeff Bridges improvise was " you human paraquat".

John Goodman's "Walter" character was developed as a caricature/tribute to John Milius, a director & screenwriter who was infamous in Hollywood for his conservative & strongly pro-gun sentiments (he'd demand a handgun of his choice as one of his contract stipulations). Among Milius' better-known writing credits are Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry, 1982's Conan the Barbarian, and the original (1984) Red Dawn; he also directed the latter two titles. He was a friend and classmate of George Lucas at USC's School of Cinema-Television; the two famously agreed to give each other a share of the other's profits for two films they were making concurrently: Milius' Big Wednesday, which was a tremendous flop, and a little Lucas project titled Star Wars.
