Howdy! Here's four simple tricks, tips, hacks to help take your piano playing to the next level. These are probably aimed at basic players but hopefully there might be something in there that could be useful to you.
I've put chapter markers in so that you can jump to the next section if you're already a pro at certain bits.
Hope you enjoy the lesson. Let me know in the comments if you like this sort of thing and want to see more or tell me what you'd like to see from me.
*Apologies for some of the audio issues with the piano, I spotted them too late! I'll do better next time. Sorry!*
Cheers! MK
Chapters:
00:00-00:41 Intro
00:41-04:25 Root & 5th pedal thingy
04:25-07:50 Sustain Pedal
07:50-09:32 Dynamics
09:32-12:38 Inversions
12:38 Awesome extra trick (drop 2)!!
These 'not beginner but not yet intermediate' lessons are aimed right at my current stage. There's an old saying: 'when the pupil is ready, the teacher will appear'. Thanks Michael. Love the style and content both. I'm going to work the hell out of these tips!
Your comment makes me very happy Robert, thank you. So glad that you’ve found some use from my ramblings! 🎹🎵
The dry posh nonchalant "okay, that was a bit weird" and then just continue as if that didn't just happen, was the funniest thing i saw today and no one is apparently talking about it 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Man, you are awesome teacher
Ah, thank you 🙏
I appreciate your kind comment, hopefully the video was useful.
This lesson was so perfect for me. Thank you so much Michael. This helps me put the whole picture together.
.
Great to hear Bill, glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment
Wow this made me want to make piano my first priority again!
Hey Evan, that's so great to hear. I'm glad you found this useful and it's inspired to get back to the piano. Thanks for your comments 🙏
This is my new favorite channel 😎
Awesome! Thanks Justin and welcome! Really pleased you’re here and enjoying the content. 👍🏼🎹🎵
Outstanding. Amazing. Wonderful.
I have been stuck with what I already know but can’t make use of artistically. This is a gold mine. Thank you!!
Awesome! Really pleased you found it useful. Thanks for the nice comment. 🙏
Happy exploring!! 🎹
You've a terrific way of explaining things in a very digestible way. Would love some more videos directed at the beginner/intermediate players.
Ah cheers Eoin, really appreciate your comment. Will definitely consider what other similar content I could create for the beginner/intermediate pianists. 👍🏼🎹
Wow, You are an excellent teacher. I feel like I’ve been in this cycle of somewhere between beginner and intermediate knowing something’s and missing others. There’s not much on CZcams targeted towards that and since finding your videos, it’s really helped me. Thank you!
Thanks Joshua, appreciate your kind words. Good to hear that you've found some value in what I'm putting out. Thanks for leaving a comment 👍
Ah. This is probably a better entry point into exploring drop 2. I've been intimidated by all the drop 2 stuff I've seen being used with 7th chords. Three notes might be easier to dip my toe into this. Once again, many thanks.
Yeah, this approach to drop 2 voicings is super simple. It's the same premise with the more extended chords but I think they create a different sound. I think this drop2 with triads can create quite a folky sound but also is really common in gospel music. Drop2 with four or five note voicings is much more leaning into a jazz sound. Glad you found the video useful, thanks for watching and leaving a comment 👍🏻
One word: super
Thanks Kerstin! Hope it was helpful. Thanks for the comment 🙏
Thanks Michael!
The inversion tip is fantastic! So simple, yet I was missing it all the time.
8:35 talking about little differences that can embellish a song, I think of rubato, and that's basically, playing some notes slightly out of meter, strangely, it can make it sound more natural, less robotic and more expressive, the best part, is that it usually comes with practice and experience!
Awesome tips. Thanks!
Cheers Tim, glad you found it useful!
The 1st and the 5th as chords are called power chords in rock and are pretty cool because you can go mayor or minor and completely change the feeling of the phrase. The power chord gives you the opportunity to change the course of your song right on the fly.
Kick ass tutorial! Especially the drop 2 flick ideas. Nagyon Kozonom!!
Cheers Scott, glad you found some useful bits. Thanks for watching. 👍🏼🎹🎵
Superb content - no fuss, no filler! This was exactly what I was looking for and now need to practice. Thanks! 👍
Awesome! I'm glad you found the stuff in there useful! Happy practising!
Thanks, I love this easy-to-digest format. Very useful stuff!
Awesome! Glad you found something useful in there. Thanks for your comment. 👍🏼🎹
My favourite music teacher on the internet! Always a pleasure Michael; thanks for your efforts
Andre, you're too kind. Thank you 🙏
Love your lessons!!!! Hardly anyone on CZcams make videos for in betweeners like us👏👏👏 thanks!
Thank you 🙏
Glad you're enjoying them and finding some useful bits in there. Cheers.
This is gold. More like this please ❤
Cheers man! Thanks for returning! I’ll have a think about what else I could offer that’s similar. 👍🏼🎹
I've never seen that arm in the jumper thing, and can't wait to do it in front of my grandsons, they're gonna freak out lol😂. Also, great tips wonderfully explained.
🤣😂 Ha!! Love it! At least you learnt one important lesson from the video 😂
Really enjoying these recent videos. Like your presentation. That slow thoughtfulness, thn the expansion. Like the chords on screen. I am just working on freeing myself from the diatonics - though I am very fluent within them. I share your fascination with teh dim chord and I also have spent a lot of time wondering about the II half dim. It's got a stunning beauty and the resolution is so strong. It reminds me of the last kiss in the Disney movie and prince charming marries. It is the second mode of the natural minor, maybe that's part of it. I especially like resolving to the I in first inversion - E at the top. I'd love to explore ways to resolve this magical Disney chord.
Thanks Steve, I appreciate you making your way through the videos! 😂
Fantastic :)
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏼🎹
You've always been a great teacher. x
❤️
Thank you, Michael. Very interesting lesson. Loved the alien! I remember kids doing that when I was a playtime supervisor back in the 80s! 😆
Hey Laura! Ha! Hopefully there were some other takeaways too 😂
Thanks for watching!
Just started playing about two months ago. Im not sure how I ended up here but I’m glad I did. These types of videos are tremendously helpful to me. As a beginner it’s a lot of scales, and chords and theory. Which is good and necessary. But I would love to just sit down and improvise over some chords and have it sound better than just triads over the root.
Hey EP, I’m glad you ended up here too! Did you check out my other video about learning to improvise on piano? There may be a few useful bits in there too.
It can be a slow process but you’ve got this. It’s definitely important to do some work on bits outside your comfort zone so that you’re not always playing the same thing and you continue to grow. And also really important to try and play a little every day even if it’s just a few minutes. Good luck on your journey.
Check out ‘The Keys Coach’ channel too, it’s a new channel but Adam shares some good little tips and tricks to try too. 👍🏼
@@michaelkeithson I watched the first half very late last night. I will watch the rest later today. So if your analytics show someone in the southeastern US bingeing your instructional videos this weekend, it’s probably me!
@@EP-yc2gu Ha! Awesome. Hope you find it useful. Let me know if you think there are any other specific areas you would value a video on. 👍🏼
Drop it so you can pop it! Thank you, Michael.
🤣
Thanks
Wow! Thank you Ryan, that means a bunch. I'm so pleased you're finding some value in my videos. 🙏
You got a style in
Teaching , a bit mischievous, but it’s fun.
Ha! Can’t say I was going for the mischievous vibe but glad it’s fun 😂
Thank you so much❤
You are very welcome! I hope you found some useful stuff in there somewhere! Thanks for your comment. 👍🏼🎹
Yes I did. Trying to learn❤
1st way: practice more than I have🤣
Seriously tho, usually I already do the first suggestions, pedal tones, embellishments etc, but there's often 1 i haven't thought of, so I'll keep watching
Number 1: Be Pro
Number 2: Don't suck
Number 3: play with extreme confidence, regardless, and stare down any potential doubters
most importantly is a teacher u actually like. thanks
Agreed! There's no replacement for a 1:1 teacher who can speak specifically to where you're at and hold you accountable. But in the absence or addition to that, I think CZcams videos can be really helpful 😉😂
@@michaelkeithson ha u misunderstand. ur easy to learn from because your so relatable/ likeable. even on youtube
@@AyahuascaMagic Ah, thanks, appreciate that. 🙏
🤯
Starting with root position, is the drop2 the same of taking the 3rd at bass? It's like spreading the chord you want (the inversion you want) in 2 octave, isn't?
Great tips, I liked a lot (and I'm a guitarist)
Thanks for your comment Fabio.
The drop2 isn’t specifically about the 3rd in the bass, you can have the root note in the bass (3rd & 5th in right hand - 5th at bottom, 3rd at top) or the 5th in the bass (root & 3rd in right hand - 3rd at bottom, root at top). It’s all about taking an inversion of a right hand chord (root position, 1st inversion or 2nd inversion) and dropping the middle note down an octave into your left hand.
Hope that helps, apologies if I didn’t explain it very well.
Just subscribed to your channel. Loved this lesson. Thanks. Is that James Taylor looking up at you??
Hey Bill! Welcome! Good spot, yeah, love that album, was the soundtrack to my youth thanks to my dad. Got to be one of the greatest songwriters ever.
Same thing for me.@@michaelkeithson
Practice
Of course, but what should you practice?! It’s an important question, thanks 😉. If you spend the next twenty years only practicing chord triads in root position it’s not going to be much use. These are a few little devices people can practice to potentially add an improved dimension to their piano playing. Hopefully it might help someone.
That is a bit of narrow statement, but a lot of you tubers are selling snake oil on the net promising people the shortest way to sound professional. I will add to sound professional not only do you need practice and a lot of it but a good teacher.
some of your videos are pretty good, but didn't learn much here, use the sustain pedal-wow, thats a thought!
Yeah, not every video is for everyone.
Woah, the piano channels are out of phase, but voice isn't. Feels very weird to listen to.
Another killer video. Keep em coming. I don't even play piano, I play guitar but your vids have plenty for me.
Cheers Dan! It’s never too late to start playing piano! Everyone knows it’s the best instrument 😜😬
Wow, it seems like you packed a lot of 'goodies' into this video. Thank you so much.
Cheers, thanks for the comment. Hope it was useful. 👍🏼
