A great video, I have a SDR radio that I am going to try and set up with OpenPlotter, etc to get weatherfax and AIS. The only question is on video it seems like it isn't getting an accurate sampling of moving targets and enough range(probably an antenna issue). I might still go for a commercial unit that broadcasts(on a VHF antenna), I haven't decided yet. I've seen coasties harra-ss sailboats because they know they are a sailboat through AIS and can't run away from an inspection. So broadcasting boats seem to get more "inspections."

Many thanks for the comments. Interesting about the antenna, something I need to investigate further. I’ve also seen weather fax in the documents and fancy having a go at that too.

Really a very good video. Thank you. But I have question, at 1:35 min you have to initialize the PPM, but do you take the "Currenty PPM" or the "Cumulative PPM"? Thank you very much in advance.

Thanks for your comments on the video - You take the Cumulative value, the longer you leave it to run, the more stable that value should get. Mine got to the point where it hardly changed and that was what i used.

is the ais receiving range dependent more on the antenna than the receiver itself or are the receivers themselves varying in their ability to pick up signals

Hi, I’m sure it’s a bit of both, however, the change from a small indoor antenna to the boats main VHF made a huge difference to mine. I went from being able to see the next marina to approx 8 miles. It is a good idea to use a separate AIS aerial on the back of the boat instead of splitters which I do currently use.

Dear sir I need to know how first I started sdcrd installation then how to connect my laptop

    • @BoatingwiththeBaileys

Hi, if you have a copy of openplotter installed on your laptop then SDR VHF should be on the settings menu for you to install. The laptop should detect the device once connected and then the video should cover the setup. If you need further help or i've not answered your question fully, let me know.

the GSM function has nothing to do with AIS!. the GSM is used to calibrate the Gains and PPM why did you say "it will go off and find AIS signals" ? the AIS signals are transmitted on are 25Khz plus and minus of 162Mhz

Hello, You are 100% correct, I should have said GSM at that point rather than AIS. As you say the GSM function has nothing to do with AIS, it was added to the software to calibrate SDR's that dont feature a built-in TCXO.

@@BoatingwiththeBaileys no problem , I have learned that there is long-range AIS also transmitted 25khz plus and minus of 156.8mhz channels C and D .. not near the coast to check this out
