  • We cycle across Java, Bali and Lombok for 6 weeks, as part of our bike touring adventure around the world.
Starting out by navigating the traffic and laneways of Jakarta, we ride across northern Java, exploring new foods and taking in the volcano lined landscapes, on our way towards Bali.
We cross Bali from north to south, experiencing the Hindu Galangal festival on our way, which sees the streets decorated in offerings to the gods, in a celebration of good over evil.
We pass through the Gili islands on our way to Lombok, where we ride a lap of this beautiful island during the Muslim month of Ramadan.
This is the final part of our trip through Asia as we make our way around the world on our bicycles. If you have any questions about our time here please ask us in the comments section.

How did you like cycling on Java in terms of traffic and nature compared to the other islands you’ve been cycling ? Would you recommend it. A few years ago I’ve been cycling around Bali, Lombok and Subawa for 2 months . We might think about adding Indonesia to our lists of countries we’d like to cycle through starting in August .

We really liked it, but I would probably take a more inland route next time. The traffic was never that bad, it's slow moving, and there's so many roads to choose from, you can take as busy or as small a road as you like. The scenery was really nice, with lots of volcanos, but would have been better further inland from the coast I think. The beaches werent very good, from what we saw of them. There were some sections along the north that were a bit boring, but probably only because it's such a big island.. the food was amazing though, because of the big population there's just food everywhere, some of the best and cheapest food we've had anywhere

We took 4 weeks to ride from Jakarta to Bali, some days riding 50km, some 100km, with lots of days off to enjoy the food and culture along the way 😀

And one more question 🙃 how do you navigate ? Do you have a bike computer or just using your smartphone?

We just use our phones. And use the app komoot. It's so much easier as you can re route straight away whenever you need to, which is pretty often in places like java due roads being impassable for whatever reason

That's a tough one! Definitely somewhere on Java, probably just one of the little shops in the small towns whose names I forget. So many good ones with vendors who were always happy to see us. We realised the key was to get there as soon as they open to get it while it's fresh 🤤😁
