Gotta love it. I remember coming into LI Sound under full sail with a 30 degree heel and making zero speed over ground! Oh, and watch out for the submarines! That same day, a beautiful clear, perfect sailing day without another boat in sight, weren't we surprised when a conning tower broke the surface aft. No, really, I mean right freakin' there! God, I hope he saw us. Please tell me he saw us before he surfaced!

I enjoyed the short discussion of your electrical system. You should make a series talking about what systems you have on your boat and what modifications you have done to her. The more technical the better!

Looks nice. Im about to cross Biscay but have been having terrible weather here in Spain. Its taken me a month to do 300 miles! Ive spent more time in marinas than at sea!!

Aidan Hill Hi Aidan, Thanks, We're been working tirelessly to finish the editing of the remaining 15 episodes that will wrap up Season 2. We're also working extremely hard to prepare Paragon to push off from Kinsale Ireland in about a month to sail up the coast of Ireland, and then offshore directly to Reykjavík, Iceland to pick up 2 crew in early July. Then we're going back to Greenland. So it's a race with the editing to finish Season 2 in time. We appreciate the feedback, encouragement and support!

Sailing in my backyard. I live in Groton, CT. There are some decent anchorages at the mouth of the Mystic River and in the Thames river also. Great anchorages on the north side of Fishers Island. I must say I love both Block Island and Newport, RI. Enjoy sailing to both every chance I get.

Thomas Barnhart Thanks Thomas, I really look forward to when we can film an in depth tour of Paragon like we did with Fiona, Southern Cross, Fellowship, Bubbly, Bella Luna and Rotop. We've also worked really hard to complete the filming of at least a dozen other boat tour/interview series of cruisers who we met along the way from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, England and the US. They all had wonderful offshore cruising sailboats and amazing stories to tell! So much footage.. but we are working tirelessly to get through it and greatly appreciate your support.
Really enjoy the videos Drake. What is unique in this video is to really watch how you operate in the galley. It's more than a tour, but shows functionality. Makes me realize how much thought has gone into the details of the boat.
It really is a comfortable galley. Many places to wedge yourself in when it gets rough, but spacious enough to make cooking an enjoyable experience. I also love the fact that we have those big ports right there...gives us a great view as we're cookin'!

Thanks John. Even though it was a long day, it was fantastic being out there. I just wish we could have continued to sail along at 2-4 knots. If only there had been a some other place to tuck in for the night. Ah well...

Love your videos, been watching for several months. I really liked how this video showed some of the details of Paragon through a simple daily activity such as making breakfast. For someone who has not been on very many boats but will soon be restoring/refitting my own, I am always watching videos for details like how and where other boaters store things such as pans, eggs and garbage. Also with this episode, I started following your location, as mentioned in the video, on Google Earth. Who knows if I'll even graduate from land locked trailer sailer weekender to cruiser, but your videos sure keep the inspirational juices flowing. Keep up the good work.
Chip Dance these days a good trailer sailer is worth more then a shabby old cruiser so if you do a good refit who know's you may end up with something to get you that cruise boat

OMG, what a glorious sailing day! Mo, do you get seasick off and on? Does it go away after you are pretty used to sailing? I think you need to take Drake to a beach and have a "date"...LOL Cheers! Love your vids!
Another great video of yours. I wish I knew how to make mine professional like that blending in different scenes and adding music. I might have to take a computer course on how to do that.
Jay Ritch We highly recommend the editing software called 'iMovie' as a great way to start video editing. It comes free with every Macintosh computer. It's very easy to use and we made all of our Fiona, Fellowship, and Bella Luna and many other videos with it.
Well I have Windows 8.1 which came withg CyberLink Media Suit. And I can honestly tell you, mine's not easy to use. Not only that, but most of the functions no longer work unless I pay $78.00 online to upgrade it. What a damn rip-off. But thanks anyway for telling me about your iMovie software which came with your Macintosh.
Drake & Monique.. Have you thought of trading the wooden Oars for a small electric outboard motor.. seems like you have plenty of Solar to keep it charged..Cheers and fair winds Hazza Downunder

In April unless it the weekend the LI was all your sail out of Noank, Ct. for years. You were fighting the current all the out . Loved Block an Newport.

I was curious about the negative 61 amps showing when you had both the alternator and solar collectors going... and I started to say just a toaster but, I bet the auto pilot draws amperage... is it the combination of the toaster and the autopilot that outpaced your total current generation at that moment?

I see it was calm but with Drake asleep and Mo forward without obvious attachment I was alarmed. I hope you have some watch overboard mitigation.
LEB 3 I debated whether to publish that footage because I knew that someone would point this out. I can totally understand where you're coming from and respect your opinion, however we are only harnessed in when we judge it's necessary. We do use a Watch Commander alarm which has to be reset every 10 minutes. If the on watch person has fallen overboard and is unable to reset the alarm, then a second alarm goes off which is so ear piercingly loud that it immediately wakes up everyone aboard.

Bacon and fried egg bagels are one of my favorite quick breakfasts. I couldn't tell. Do you smoosh the yolks when you flip them? It keeps the yolk from dripping down your shirt when you bite into it.

what autopilot do you use
We have a CPT wheel mounted autopilot and it has worked really well for us. Works great, inexpensive, reliable, easy to install, easy to maintain, and great tech support. Also if any part of it did ever fail offshore then it would be very easy to swap it our for a new unit so we have a spare. cptautopilot.com

Drake : I would imagine that the best place to use Micro-inverters is on a sailboat where there is a panel here and there in shadow pulling the rest down. :) Otherwise, I do not see much of a need for them in typical Terra Firma situations.
cnypilot I'm not familiar with micro-inverters. We have a 1500 watt pure sine watt inverter that converts 12 volt DC from our batteries to 120 volt AC to run our computers, a toaster, a breadmaker and a washing machine. Our solar panels charge the batteries.
DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life Quite right. I have an Off-Grid setup, myself with 2000 watts of solar. Whereas our systems have all the panels wired into a common charge controller that recharges the battery and then an inverter for the loads... They have these things called "Micro-inverters" where you have each panel attached to a separate one rather than a common. The idea is that when one panel is in shade, it doesn't pull the other panels on the string down.
While watching your video, the thought occurred to me that a sail boat is a great application of them. The mast is always shading something! :)
cnypilot Interesting. We have 5 separate but networked MPPT solar controllers (BlueSky 3024i's). Each controller is hooked up to 3 of the 15 panels in sections port bow, port stern, starboard bow, starboard stern, and hard top.) I think this makes it a little more efficient if some of the panel sections are more shaded than others. Each of our panels can also be tilted up to 180 degrees so that we can angle them towards the sun... You have 50 more watts than we do. :)

cnypilot All of the books and articles that I've read about solar panels say that you should do an analysis of how much electricity you'll use on a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis and how much sun will theoretically be available in the geographical locations you'll be sailing in, and then sizing your solar array and battery banks to match. But I took a very different approach. I installed as many panels and batteries as it was physically possible to do so on our 42 foot sailboat. Some people think that the amount of solar energy we have onboard is ridiculously too much, but I disagree. I love having copious amount of electricity always available no matter where we are and to not have to be dependent on generators or shore power.

Newport looked completely different years ago when I was young.. There were children, hobby shops, 1cent candy shops, bakeries and so on. I was born there and spent lot's of time at the local library and then came crack and gentrification.. Now I can't go to the town I was born, because I can not afford it.. Have fun, add some flowers to all the Historic slave grave yard's for a Brother.. And please do hit all my favorite fishing spot's, that I grew up going to every day.. As veteran if I go there I most likely will be arrested.. Oh America the Beautiful .......
