I was told when was 27 that one day I would require a full knee replacement. I decided at that time that I was going to avoid this because once the whole knee is done you are more or less done for. I lasted until recently age 69 and by a stroke of good fortune was introduced to one of only 2 docs who perform this surgery in Canada. I have read other posts discussing pain. There is no pain from the actual replacement, the knee is ready to go right after surgery, in fact, we are not discharged unless we can prove to physio that we can walk and climb stairs. The inflammation and pain comes from the soft tissue being cut and disturbed along with the alignment of ligaments and tendons. For the last 2o years, I had been walking bowed, and now my legs are straight, this new unusual motion is what is causing pains until my body is trained back to normal. Right after surgery, my doc gave me the green light that I can return to playing hockey. Yup we crazy Canadians who play until we are gone.
If you qualify, which is a big one, as you must have a structural base, and no knee damage and this is available where you reside, do not hesitate, it is well worth it.

what is considered "knee damage".....my cartilage is worn but my ligaments are fine...one doctor told me i needed a new knee in 5 yrs... I play hockey too along with softball and golf and pickleball and I asked him can't you just repair the one side of the knee cartilage...he said not with today's tech...then I go and see these types of videos...i talked to a friend who had partials on both knees and he is fine...i really think these doctors just like the easy quick high paying jobs instead of the shorter recuperation and back on your feet procedures like this one does

I play hockey with a number of docs including one of Canadas leading thoracic surgeons.
None of them and I mean none had ever heard of the Oxford knee.
I am lucky as one can be as I procrastinated as long as I did because in my heart I felt there had to be another way other than a full knee.
Maybe as more are educated this will change.
The first assessment is to determine if your knee is stable enough for the surgery.
I walked bull legged for 20 years and now as I am walking straight it is tough. Muscles are complaining because they are being worked.
I actually gained 1/2 inch in height.

@@brianbanks3044 it depends on if you have medial wear or lateral cartilage wear. This technology is indicated for anterior medial cartilage wear, full thickness lateral cartilage, intact ACL, and a Varus (bow legged) deformity of less than 15 degrees.

I am going in for this procedure in 2 days. I had a whole knee 8 years ago and this is totally different. I expect the recovery to be much faster. Last time I could walk with no assistance in 17 days. We have come a long way since my first scope in 1995.

@@kathleenslusher1150 Doing great. I was walking without a cane in 10 days. First 4 days do nothing but ice, stretch, rest, repeat. After that, I could use a cane until I did not need it any more. Every day I could tell that things were significantly better. Now the goal will be to remove my bad walking habits from being in pain for so long. Starting PT today.

I’m expecting to get it done! Nothing like looking at it before hand! Either a partial or full depending what they fine! Pretty scary to look at! I am a nurse- always good to know what happens. Looks much worse when the tissue is involved- no wonder it hurts as people claim! I keep saying- do I really want to do this! I know it will only get worse though!

Its horrible and terrifying to see how they destroy a knee, with drills, pieces of metal, etc.
With all the money that there is and that progress in non-invasive treatments that solve osteoarthritis, cartilage regeneration, etc. is not the priority. Why? There are regenerative treatments for cartilage, bones, whatever you want, because there are very good scientists and researchers in medicine. These good medical solutions do not reach the citizens. What there is is car mechanic workshop medicine.
