His genuine concern is sweet and that last bit about it being a sloppy attempt on the commander's life made me chuckle. He hits the nail on the head, too.

Threatening to gouge someone's eyes out is pretty effective if you're speaking to a Batarian.
Especially considering their beliefs in afterlife. They believe that the soul exits the body through the eyes (source: lair of the shadow broker DLC)
