    This starts to feel more like a paid add than a high quality review we used to see🥲. No mention of how it compares to S9 in vacuuming or other areas. No comparison to other top of the line mop combo vacuums like RR S8 Pro Ultra, Q-revo or others.
    Frankly, the point of REVIEWS is not to list out all the ”good stuff”, but compare it critically to other options on the market and highlight it’s strengths, weaknesses and differences between the products. Especially on a market as difficult for the average consumer to understand as this.

    iRobot seems to be dragging behind and stays behind, BUT I do have a J7+ as one of my vacs and even with its lower suction power it still is a very effective vacuum cleaner that just works without ever complaining. It runs in the 100sqm second part of my house daily and does a damn good job.

    • @jamesdeluxa9782
      @jamesdeluxa9782 Před 7 měsíci +5

      J series is actually pretty good. I don't know if I would say they're "behind".
      It's not as quick as your typical LIDAR robot, but the VSLAM camera and floor tracker algorithm has improved substantially since the 900 series line of Roomba robots.
      The i7 navigation was a noticeable improvement to the 900 series and the J series seems to be in a class above both predecessors. I've tried and used pretty much everything Roomba.
      I would agree with you if they stuck with the older hardware from the "I" series, but I just got a new J9+ (non combo) sample and I've been fairly impressed after using LIDAR exclusively for the past few years.
      My complaint for J7 and below is going to be the weaker motor.. Same was true for i7 and sub models though.
      Was weaker than both 960/980 on certain types of carpets, but generally "good enough" and better than most Chinese stuff for deep clean.
      The J9+ models more or less solves this conundrum, but they're also overpriced in the same fashion.. :D
      I guess we can argue that they're behind on mopping, but I do think the algorithm used by IRobot is a bit more logical with a simpler system.
      My only real complaint is MSRP prices. I would say both J9's need to be cheaper.

    • @rudy4434
      @rudy4434 Před 6 měsíci

      I heard the J7+ hits things a lot, how do you experience that? Does it bump into things a lot?

    • @hansielategan969
      @hansielategan969 Před 6 měsíci

      @@rudy4434 It is pretty aggressive, but have not seen any damage as such. Of the three robot vacs I've had, it is however the one that has given the least issues. iRobot still uses that SLAM (camera) technology that is old and original mapping of your area takes time to set up. You have to be patient with the first two runs. Once it has the map, the robot just always works.
      The other thing I can complain about, is the battery life. Where it runs now (100sqm area) it is fine. When it was my primary in the main house, it could not complete the full house on a charge. The charge and resume works perfect though.
      So in summary, I am happy with it, it is very reliable, like I say, it just always works. I clean it about once a month. The biggest gripe for me is the price. I personally believe that they are totally overpriced for what you get.

      @MrZhilvinas Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@rudy4434 It still relies on the bump sensors for navigation, the camera is for obstacle avoidance and figuring out where it is in general. It constantly bumps into objects and corners to find their exact location. For the most part it is a gentle tap, the j7 slows down considerably on approach. Every now and again it does hit something going 'full tilt', especially in heavily cluttered areas like around a kitchen table with all the chair legs. I added some fuzzy velcro tape to the bumper and it basically eliminates the bump sound as well as the risk of leaving scrape marks on things.

    @vacuumwars did you test on multiple floor types? My concrete style kitchen floor it can't mop. The wheels lose traction and it slips and slides everywhere and goes in circles. It got all messy under the rollers due to that. I put it on "Eco" mode and using diluted Bona solution that comes already mixed in the bottle. Even on Eco, the wheels slip. My M6 never slips. This J9 is useless if it can't mop my kitchen. When I send it home and it lifts up the mop pad, it takes off. So the mop pad as well as the wheels slipping is hindering it from moving properly. Tried new dry mop pads and cleaned wheels. Same issue.

  • @davey3765
    @davey3765 Před 2 měsíci

    The J9+ vacuum is epic - just a vacuum demon on carpet, the mop on uneven wood floors is kinda hit and miss. The pad is good but I wish it was a little bit more bushy to mop an area with a 3-4mm variance as the vacuum goes over it. Otherwise it just takes 2 passes. My wood floors have some fluctuation. I gotta say this things computer is awesome. Just need to give it a few days to learn then its golden. But the J9+ is great. My spouse comes home after work just impressed how the new houses floors are so clean since we have no time to do it lately. I had boxes from our old house in my office and the J9 would see that but when I moved them and cleaned my office it noticed there was new floor space and re-mapped on the fly accordingly. Now my lab's like to follow it around and I do get notifications of obstacles and get pictures on my phone of my dogs staring at it lol the J9 just stops and stares at them until they move out of the way.

  • @awolfgang11
    @awolfgang11 Před 7 měsíci +13

    I'd be interested to know how big of a area was used to test the mapping timing. I got the Roomba S9 with the auto-empty doc for my very large main floor of my house and I could only get it to finish mapping once by blocking off a large room of my house (it took over 7 hours!). Even then the map eventually degraded with navigation errors to the point it was unusable and after multiple attempts I couldn't get it to re-map. So I moved it to a smaller floor of the house and got a roborock S7 Max V and it finished the mapping under 1-2 hours (didn't time it) with just some minor errors due to the window. Since then I noticed the roborock is much faster and better at navigating the house then the roomba ever was and I've basically written off roomba's vision mapping system until there is some sort of major improvement because even on the smaller floor it gets lost easier and takes much longer to navigate.

    • @TheScalpel1
      @TheScalpel1 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Also have a big house, got the Roomba J7+. Has been a nightmare with maps degrading, rooms being collapsed randomly, doors appearing where there arent doors. Once the map degraded to such a point, that we had to reset and have it remap which ended up taking 2 days of work. Only if Roomba switches to lidar which properly measures distance will i EVER consider buying them again.
      Roomba's keep out zones are also, due to the poor navigation very unrealiable and needs to be like 1½-2 times larger than they should need to be. Our Roomba J7+ have several times munched on our curtains (keep out zones) and ran into the bathing area from where it cant get out (despite MASSIVE keep out zones around them).

    I do have a request for future robot vacuum tests. It would be immensely helpful to see a test focusing on how robot vacuums interact with hardwood floors that are more prone to scratching. Personally, I have Bella Cera flooring in my home, and the warranty information specifically advises against using robot vacuums with beater bars or rotating brushes.

    i have given up on roombas. after about five years and seven devices in multiple locations, we switched to shark. the wear components (the rollers and the side brush) need to be replaced monthly. otherwise, the roombas are great for about a year, and then things start wearing out, like the wheels. when that happens, you are either replacing the entire unit, or wheel modules at $100 per wheel.
    if you purchase a roomba, pay for whomever's maintenance agreement is being offered, because you're going to need it. note that if you do buy a maintenance agreement, it is only good for that one robot, so once you have to get it replaced, under the warranty, you have to buy the warranty, again.

    I actually agree with them about the self cleaning. When you have a full house and pets, I feel like the parts of the machine that don't get tended to regularly can often be really gross and cause problems. that little area below the self cleaning zone is going to collect litter sprinkles, skin particles, food waste, and fur. I believe that one of the reasons why our little entry-level Roomba has worked so well for so long is because I have to tend to it every time it runs. And don’t tell me the argument that it’s lame because you have to manage it. I’m still not the one personally vacuuming the whole house every day 😂

    Is this still VSLAM not LIDAR?
    Maybe it's an issue seen more in UK homes where the ceilings on older homes can be more complicated - higher ceilings with irregular borders and fancy covings - but my experience with the Roomba i7+ was a disaster. It seemed to create a complete and accurate initial map and from then on cleaned the front of my apartment OK but I began to refer to my bedrooms as "the rooms of no return" because whenever it entered any of those rooms to clean it never once - and I literally mean not once out of over 50 attempts and about 5 re-mappings - made it back to the docking station. It would get hopefully lost and after an hour or so I would go and rescue it and find it was in a totally different room in my home to where it thought it was. It simply had no idea how to navigate back to the dock.
    Because of my terrible experiences with VSLAM navigation however good a new Roomba looks (and this one does look very good) I would never consider buying one until iRobot switches to Lidar navigation.

      You have to wait till other manufacturers patent expires or reach agreement, else irobot cannot have those including laser top and front. That’s why irobot has so limited so far, sticking to slow camera navigation. Irobot even sued shark for patent infringement till now, where sharing tech is not welcome.

      I’m not sure whether it will notice the ledge but the technologies improved so much it can easily get itself unstuck or learn to avoid that area. How long does the water last in the robot before it needs replacing? If you have to swap the mop every run anyway, is it that much more conveninent that it auto fills the water? Eg if you’re considering between this and the much more affordable J7+ where that is the main difference

    • @jcc019
      @jcc019 Před 7 měsíci +2

      I was wondering the same thing. However, it then occurred to me that the water reservoir in the J7+ might not be large enough to fully mop some homes. In that case, the owner would have to manually refill the water mid-cleaning every time. With the J9+, the roomba would refill itself and then resume mopping from where it paused. That is a very convenient improvement for some buyers. How much square footage can the J7's reservoir cover?

  • @ThalanorThornhale
    @ThalanorThornhale Před 6 měsíci

    With regard to the mopping function, I realized that there is a gap in your testing methodology that would have been revealed if done:
    Your tests show the robot cleaning different sorts of dirt in a small rectangular area. While this is a good test for cleaning efficiency of the mopping system, it overlooks real world use cases like mine:
    I have a house where the hallway, family room, bathroom, dining room and kitchen form one continuous area with over 1200 sqft.
    The flaw that irobot and this testing methodology overlooks is that the cleaning pad CAN and will get saturated with dirt in such large areas. At that time, the mopping pad just starts dragging the dirt around. None of irobot's solution address the issue, but the competition has addressed the issue for more than a year at this point by including an option to clean the mops at the base station. Other robots like the Shinebot W450 have separate on-board clean and dirty water tanks.
    This begs the question when irobot will finally catch up with the competition which at this point seems miles ahead because they combine lidar with visual systems, and have auto-mop cleaning and drying and refill.
    On a separate note, many people habe complained about irobot not using lidar. What I was thinking is that with stereoscopic vision (2 cameras) and some AI, models can be built that would derive the distance of objects to the robot based on paralax between the 2 cameras. Maybe that's a cheaper way to achieve similar outcomes.
