I've literally done the same thing on a CB350F before! Lathe and all. The smoke might be from rings not seating yet, but on all 350 fours the valve guides are worn out too. They need to have .0008 to .0012 clearance with the valve stem and yes that is the right amount of zeros. Get some new guides, some reamers, an outside micrometer, and a pin gauge set and get to work guys! When they run right, they are smooth as silk and will do the ton all day long!

    • @davez4172

I second that opinion! Blaming the work you did on the lower end may be premature. It would be nice to see you guys go through that motor and identify/fix the issues. Maybe the oil burning is due to the top end.

Great job of saving a piece of history guys! So now what to do...? Ya know, I think that you should get a set of OEM carbs (or exact replacement style), and a set of intakes and make her run really good... then perhaps a down and dirty restore on the rest of the bike. You know, take it apart, paint the frame, clean the tank and then take all of the chrome stuff that's rusty clean off the rust and paint those parts black. I think with the green tank with everything blacked out would look cool! This is just my opinion, but ya, fix it up so it can be a finished project! Keep making great video's!!!

@@RamenPoweredShitFactory that would be the best solution but first and formost you have to take into consideration the value of the bike vs the cost to re-chrome. I would agree, the black on green would look awesome. I know its not original aesthetics, but its already a far cry from factory fresh restoration. I've always been a fan of putting your own spin on restoration projects. If youve gone to all the effort to heavily modify it, why would you want it to look like it did in the brochure? Nothing against chrome, but there is something about building a one of a kind thing that appeals to me, who wants stock factory? granted tho, I do own a "I Void Warranties" T-shirt and have had some quite expensive things apart minutes after receiving them to add my own flair.

September 20 1973 was my nineteenth birthday. On that day for 1325.00 I purchased a brand new Honda cb500. Very similar to the bike you are working on. I took better care of that bike than anything i ever owned. It was a great piece of machinery It was green and black and beautiful. When I would wash it, which was several times a week, I made sure I would wash under the rear fender. The group I hung with said , “ To tell if a man takes care of his bike look under the rear fender. If it is clean you know that man takes care of his bike! I’ve owned many bikes thru the years that was my favorite one. The value of those small four bikes is rising. I would say it deserves a restoration. Just be careful to not go under water on cost versus value.

Here's a quick tip for your press, get one of the Harbor Freight 20 ton pneumatic bottle jacks. They're prettymuch a modified 20 ton bottle jack with the controls of a regular bottle jack but an extra added mechanism to operate it quickly. You can hook the jack up to compressed air and just hit a button to operate the jack and move it instead of just having to pump it by hand. The best part is that you still have the spot for the handle so you can operate it manually if you wanted to.

Putting the engine on the shelf separates it from the frame and then other pieces will wander off which eventually leaves you with nothing and the world with one less CB-350 Four. The results of the dial bore gauge were close enough that I had no doubt. Only one concern I had was the surface of the cylinder deck possibly not making the best seal after many miles. I owned a bike exactly like that bike, same color and everything. I absolutely loved that motorcycle but owned it as a kid and didn't have the resources to keep it at the time. I think this is a perfect bike to refresh mechanically but leave as is visually. All the fun of a nice bike with none of the worry of damaging it!

In 1984 i had a beat to death, 1984 KX125 my bro and i bought used from a pro motocrosser for 800 bucks and my neighbor had a new XR350 single cylinder dirt bike. He asked me to ride it to "break it in" and when i came back after a quick spin he said go ahead and beat on it as hard as you can... So i did... What fun that bike was new! It flew like a bird off jumps and pulled like a freight train on the flats. My other buddy had a CB350 two cylinder and of course we had two 350 three wheelers from Honda. a regular one and the sporty 350X that had the manual five speed. I used to love the middle light weight 350 as it seemed the perfect compromise for dirt bikes and the minimal size for street bikes but the Honda abandoned the 350cc bikes in favor of kids bikes and full sized 600cc adult bikes as less people were commuting to save gas and more people were buying toy bikes for their kids

I love the CB's of that era. Rode a 650 a lot in HS. Really reliable and fun bikes. Also always felt safer on one than most bikes. Of course the KZ 900 was around back then and I rode one of them some. The Honda just seemed more stable and was more comfortable. The blue and the Green ones were the best colors.

Guys, whatever you do, please don't shit-can that bike. The CB350 four is one of the most valuable vintage Hondas ever made. You guys did some very good work on that nearly destroyed engine. Well done!!
I had that exact bike when I was in the ARMY back in '83. Had the bore and stroke kit done on it and carbs and cam too. What a fun bike. Good memories. :)

First off, you can only get a true round bore and hone with the sleeves in the jug/block as the wall thickness needs the support. Then the bore gauge needs o be spun and take 3 measurements at the top and the bottom of each bore especially if the old pistons have any evidence of wear on the skirts but due to how a reciprocating engine works the pistons will egg a bore with time and cause localized wear specifically on the front and back of the wrist pins, more so on the front from the power stroke.

Great job! That smile when it started made all the lathe time worth it.
Heck yeah, nothing like the feeling of hearing a project engine fire up.
    Congrats.
I'm in favor of restoring it, not at a show car/bike level but streetable for sure.

That is a classic. People look for them. Retail about 5000. It smokes because the rings have not set yet. Give it time and miles.

An old trick I use to unstick old clutch’s is to put the front against something solid with the bike in neutral, pull in the clutch handle give it some revs and pop it in gear. It’ll stall because it’s stuck and can’t roll forward but after a few try’s the clutch usually breaks free and starts slipping again.

I've owned an 81 CB900 c and the 1979 cb750k and seeing him ride this 350 and hearing the engine singing that makes me want to find a cb350. You can find them really cheap. I've seen them on Facebook marketplace in St Louis here for a couple hundred dollars I may have to buy one and restore it and make a cafe racer out of it they're just so cool

that bike is for sure worth restoring! its complete minus the carbs. these old classic hondas are going away fast. I have q 74 cb350f. Its built into a cafe racer. Ive spent a couple years getting it all sorted out. It runs like a swiss watch. as it did back in the day.

Those old Hondas are fantastic bikes. If it has a title or can get one it is worth restoring. I have been looking for a decent example of one of these for 10 years. Never have found one at the right price.

8:24 Shoulda just left the sleeves in the jug and taken it to be bored and honed at a machine shop. We've done quite a few big bores for people where I work. Sometimes the sleeves distort when they're press fit into the block, so we prefer them to be installed first so that the size we hone is the final size. Edit: Guess you already knew that lol
18:44 I'd recommend getting a cheap set of micrometers to set the bore gauge with. It's a lot more useful to know the actual diameter than just how out-of-round it is. Also, you want to measure at different points by rocking the gauge in where you want to measure and then rocking it back out. Turning it and sliding it up and down can damage the crosshatch, plus it'll wear the tip of the gauge.
