  • Larry Nix, proprietor of LNix Mastering in Memphis, Tennessee, announces the availability of Vinyl mastering in addition to their already phenomenal state of the art CD mastering services.

Cutting to vinyl is nothing new for Larry. In fact, he may be the consummate living master of the craft. Larry was the magician cutting the grooves for almost every hit cut by Stax until eventually bringing his mastering facility home to roost in the midst of Ardent Recording Studios in midtown Memphis, Tennessee.
In his own words, "I've cut somewhere between 75 to 80 gold or platinum albums on this lathe!"

history of music in memphis in '60's and 70's is documented really well in Robert Gordon's book, It Came From Memphis. A great read for those interested on recording studios and all those who influenced music in Memphis.

And for the first year (1968-69) of Stax' post-Atlantic existence, lacquers were cut by Columbia's Nashville studios; I've quite a few 45's with custom ZTSB numbers written in very small type.

Mastercraft used a Scully lathe, as opposed to the Neumann used by Mr. Nix. It was around late 1971 that Stax shifted from Mastercraft to its own mastering; my copy of the 45 of Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" (Enterprise ENA-9038) was cut at Mastercraft. So technically, at the outset of the release of the "Shaft" soundtrack, Mr. Purple and Mr. Capone were correct.

@Memfomaniac : Are you sure about all that stuff? That would be stealing a very famous credit from someone. Seems to me I remember that a lot of mastering labs would put the technicians initials or an identifying mark in the lead out area of a disc.
