How Much Should You Tip a Bartender?

  • So, the amount you should tip a bartender probably shouldn’t be determined by bartenders-they’re a little self-interested here. But we gathered a group of America’s best so they could make a case for how much gratuity you should throw their way the next time you order a drink or 10.

    I run a tab and settle at the end of the night, so the x-per-drink stuff really doesn't work for me. I feel like bartenders work a good deal harder than waiters; I don't mean any offense to waiters, but I don't see most of your work, and I do see most of what the bartender does. So I'm more inclined to tip 25% or 30%, moving up toward 30 and possibly beyond if I'm planning on coming back some time soon.
    My favorite bartender gets a flat $10 every time I walk in. The other night her tip worked out to be 93% of my tab (at least officially; one of the nice things about consistently tipping fat is that not everything I order necessarily shows up on my check).

We as a customer will walk in to the restaurant or shop, grab a glass and pull the lever (similar to beer through the tap).

    I really don't understand tipping :
    -for the first coctail you've ordered (How am I supposed to know if you did job good enough to deserve me throwing money at you?)
    - for the tap beer ( unless it's tricky to pour, like guiness and other thick beers )- I mean are you serious? Should I tip 20% for the guy who sells me pepsi cup in cinema?)
    -for the bottled drinks, including beer (why should I? I'm already paying more for the sake of being in a bar, was it that difficult to take the cap off?)
    -because "that's what you do" (why would you tip even 1 cent for a bad service?)
    -for making the easiest drinks (rum+coke, gin&tonic etc) in usual way (I mean it's like ordering a cheeseburger, why would you tip for it?)
    I do understand tipping for difficult-to-make drinks prepared in way that taste particularly good, for fast service in crowded bar, for being extra nice to the client and especially for making not-on-the-menu drinks.

    I always struggled a bit with this. I've only been drinking in America once and I went to a reasonable few bars. I tipped at some (usually because my American girlfriend said we should and the bartender was pretty cheery so it seemed fair enough). But I remember the first bar we went to, it was a bit of a 'dive' bar, I didn't tip at all because I didn't realise it was expected to (being an ignorant foreigner). But looking back on it, I was thinking why should I have? I was sitting right at the bar, it's not like I was receiving table service, the first woman who served me was quite friendly but left soon after I had got there, and the woman who replaced her was miserable and only said anything to me when she told me the price of the drink, they also didn't even handle a situation with a drunk customer very well who threw a bar stool on the ground and was not escorted out by any member of staff. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the bar and the other patrons, and I felt a bit guilty after I was told it was the etiquette to tip, but I still overall couldn't justify giving the bartender a 1 dollar tip after every draught beer which they poured for me. I wonder how many Americans who would enjoy a drink after work or on a saturday night are put off by this culture of paying even more money for a drink which is already quite expensive? In Britain this has hurt the pub industry and you're not even expected to tip in Britain, home drinking has just become a cheaper and more convenient option.

But if it takes skill, or multiple ingredients, and I want you to give me good service and stronger drinks... yeah 20-25% for sure. Pouring me a beer or popping the cap off a bottle of beer for me? $0.25 or $0.50 a pint/bottle (added up at the end) should be fine. And it depends if I'm sitting at the bar or not... if I'm taking up a seat at the bar and depriving you of other revenue from other guests, then yeah I'll tip more. But if I come up there grab a beer and walk away for a while and only come back for more beers, I'll do a couple bucks and round up to the nearest $5-10 or something.

I told her she ain't gotta cause I'll tip her good. So far I've tipped her 80 on a $40 bill. I know it's really high but she's really good. Doesn't just pay attentions to her friends and co-workers including friends who're customers. Plus she's held on to my card before when I forgot it. It all depends on them. Bartenders shouldn't complain about not making tips, especially in US/Canada. When asked if they would rather make a regular wage vs a lower one + tips, they always choose tips because they usually end up making more on tips...BUT....in doing so, they inherit the full risk of not making tips and then have the audacity to argue that their living is based on the customers tipping them. It's a risk that is entirely on them, and if customers aren't tipping 20%, then it's not enough. 20% is a joke

    If my beer is $5 I'll pay six basically I round up to the next even number.

    • @NortonNice
      @NortonNice Před 7 lety

      Think about how much it costs to get a bar up and running. Construction and licencing is easily $500,000 and usually way north of that. Annual labor and payroll taxes can be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Other overhead can be tens of thousands of dollars easily. The bar stool that you sit on is $250, as are the other ten next to them. You're paying for all of that, and it takes a lot of "$2 beers" just to cover the startup costs, let alone operating costs. So, maybe don't stiff the worker. Maybe just buy your beer at the liquor store and stay home.

    • @JayR-yh5xr

    • @NortonNice
      @NortonNice Před 7 lety

      I'm saying that startup, build out, and operating overhead are factored into the price that you pay. Just like how a hamburger costs $10 at a restaurant, but you can make at least 5 hamburgers at home for the same price. Some people get it, and some people stiff the staff because they think they've got some novel ideas about how dining out is supposed to work. Lets face it though, if you can't afford the gratuity, you really can't afford to eat out. Nothing wrong with that.

      Just for some context, I'd say the average income for a bartender in my city is $38,000 - $58,000 per year. Median home price is $540,000, gas is $3.45 a gallon and a gallon of organic milk is $5.99. Annual income of my regular, everyday customers is in the neighborhood of $250,000 to $450,000 (lawyers, judges, doctors, pilots, pharma sales, software engineers, basically a white-collar bar). In other words, my regulars make 10X what I make (I'm happy for them, they got a good education and great jobs and they work very hard). The bartenders that I know make enough to stay out of poverty, but not enough to take a lot of vacations, let alone buy a home.

      I'm Canadian, and though Ive never bartended a day in my life, a couple of my closest and oldest friends do.
      The problem in the US is that most of a server's compensation relies on the tip. We tip up here to, but because we have sane laws that don't exploit the service industry, bartenders are guaranteed $10-14 (depending on province) an hour before tips. I've lived in the states a couple years, and the food in restaurants is noticeably cheaper on a per meal basis -- basically, the restaurateurs/ bar owners are fine skimping on server's wages, and using the customer's choice to tip (or not) as the reason. So servers down there ultimately feel the pressure to say insane things like "20% tip is normal". Imagine taking out your family once a month for a nice meal, spending $150, then adding $25 tip, and STILL being thought of as a cheapskate.... Im in healthcare, and my wife owns a daycare -- trust me when I say we know a thing or two about working to serve the people. To guilt the public into tipping more instead of holding the industry accountable for deliberately suppressing labour costs in order to advertise a lower cost to the public is not only ineffective, its also insulting.
      I tip 14-15% most of the time; I rarely go below 10%, if service was terrible (like the worst of the year), and up to 20% if its pretty good (a couple times 30%, because the service was over and above). Tipping 25% makes the cost of eating out prohibitive -- and Im sure Im not the only one who feels this way.
      ps- Bartenders usually make OK money if you count it at an hourly rate, so I don't know what the OP is talking about. I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but someone making $25-40/hour pouring drinks is not a sympathetic figure; especially when so much of your income goes undeclared, hence untaxed.

    • @NortonNice
      @NortonNice Před 7 lety +1

      Interesting perspective. Over here it doesn't reek of entitlement, people just understand that service employees are purposefully underpaid and earning good tips through good service is an incentive, and incentives work. One of the things Europe is known for is bad table service, possibly for this very reason.

    • @christopherherman6202
      @christopherherman6202 Před 7 lety +1

      I've been all over the world, I don't think we have a particularly poor table service. I don't think it is particularly different to the table service you get in the United States. Sure, we don't get the frequency of the waiter/waitress asking us if everything is ok. Though I think that can only be good. I personally find that incredibly irritating.
      I'm convinced that the tipping tradition in the US is simply because you chaps have one dollar notes and with them you can give off the faux impression that you're generous. What would be really generous is to give them a fair wage - I've never had to tip a fireman to give him an incentive to put the fire in my house out.
