I worked in a transmission shop 20 years ago and found do it yourself'ers often can't get them back together again. The shop had a customer towed his car in and presented a cardboard box with many parts from a transmission and wanted us to put it back together. He was mad as hell when he was charged for fixing it. people do not understand what it takes to fix someone elses problem as we have to find where everything goes. hench the high repair costs.

This is my complaint about everything, I've been building and repairing race cars since i was 12, plus i do aircraft and printing presses (yeah i got lots of hands on hobbies) and even people who "claim" to be good with engines usually are not. I call them walmart mechanics. They can do oil, plugs, and maybe transmission filter change, and suddenly they know how to everything. I had a guy at the race track ask my why i kept changing the jets on my carb. Uh temp and humidity dude, and he got offended when i said he should know this stuff. There was a study that came out last year that said "people who don't know things tend to think they are smarter than they are and those who do know things tend to denigrate what they do know".

From the factory service manual. Compared to 12:00 on the video. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I am curious as to which clearance I should use?
Check clearance between the coast clutch
retaining ring and coast pressure plate.
    Clearance should be 1.3-2.0 mm
(0.051-0.079 in). If clearance is not within
the specification, install a correct coast
clutch retaining ring that will provide the
    correct free play adjustment.

    • @mumbles552

Once you get the transmission installed, bolting the converter to the flex plate should pull the converter out of the trans a bit giving you the needed clearance. I see it was five years ago but did that work?

  • @DillonTurner395
    @DillonTurner395 Před 9 lety

Wish trans repair shops did work like this. Where I live they try to do it as cheaply as possible but charge you a ton. They just pull the trans apart, replace the broken part (band or whatever be it), then slap the trans back in the vehicle. You end up with problems shortly down the road because they didnt fix what caused the problem. Makes me sick. Has also started me on my own trans repairs. I know these 5R55 trans have tons of issues. We currently have a ford explorer (2003 with the 4.0 v6 engine) that has 270k on it. Trans is doing something right odd that I cant seem to figure out the issue with. Ive got codes for Intermediate failure and 4th gear ratio incorrect BUT I dont have a broken band. When cranking the vehicle up it shifts perfectly fine for about 5 minutes, will even make it all the way to 5th gear without an issue. Slightly shakey shifts sometimes but I think thats due to the solenoid pack. But after the 5 minutes, the next time it goes to change gear (up or down) it goes to neutral and will no do anything. Manually selecting the gear with the shifter does nothing aswell. No gears at all. Now the odd part is if you shut the vehicle off and crank it back up (doesnt care if it off for 2 seconds or 2 hours) it will shift normally (with the slight sometimes shakeyness to it that you can barely feel) for about 5 minutes then goes back to doing the neutral thing. It also seems that if a gear, say first, is manually selected when you start the vehicle it seems to stay in that gear no problem, we are gonna test it for sure today though.

  • @davebesansonoriginals9932

What do you think would cause a P0755 code?
    The symptoms I have are:
Not shifting into second gear until around 3700 rpms or I let off the accelerator and then it shifts.
After this the "OD" light begins blinking and after a few minutes the check engine light comes on.
I tried doing research and watching videos. I did the rebuild on the valve body, just got it together and it's like I did nothing, still the same.

Great videos. You inspired me to dig into a 5r55. I have a question that maybe you can answer.
    We are rebuilding a 5r55 from a 2007 Explorer with the 4.0L V6.
When rebuilding the forward gear clutch pack, we replaced the piston and all the friction plates and the steel plates (five of each). We have the thinnest retaining ring that is listed. Even with that, when we check the tolerances, we get 0.025".
    I have a couple questions.
First, the rebuild book that we are using indicates that the tolerance should be between 0.051" and 0.079" but when I watch some videos of professionals rebuilding the same transmission, they indicate that the tolerance should be between 0.030" and 0.050".
Second question, it is obvious that the rubber ring on the piston that presses against the first metal plate is a lot thicker than the almost non existent ring on the old piston. It seems like that might explain why we only have 0.025" of play. Any suggestions on what to do here? Do they make thinner backer plates? Will the rubber relax after being engaged a few times and increase the gap? Have you ever seen this and what did you do when faced with this? I have seen that when they have too large of a gap that some will remove the friction material from two friction plates and put them together to make one, two piece friction plate. Is there some similar trick that is used to increase the gap?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Mr. Gutierrez, scenario; 2010 V6 Mustang when to pass a vehicle at low speed on hill. Car downshifted, accelerated and then transmission appeared to disconnected causing engine to over rev, causing the "wrench light " indicator to come on. Throttle was released and coasted to stop. Turned car off and restarted and car drove in all forward gears for rest of road trip (approximately 100 miles). Next morning the car would not back up, but forward worked. The wrench light went off about haft way home, P1700 was only codes that was found.
Pan was removed, 1/4 hair was on magnet, reverse servo was very difficult to remove from servo body. Reverse band appears to be intact. Where should I go from here?

These video's are great, I am an engine guy and usually steer clear of trans work but funds are low and my wife's transmission just went so I have to do it myself. Its out of an 05 mountaineer 4.6 L, The forward planetary snap ring busted and the ring gear chewed the sun shell clean in half, with that much fine metal shaving throughout the system what should I do about the torque converter? Replace it, or is there a way to flush it? All through the trans the metal shavings are so fine that its like magnetic grease.

  • @davebesansonoriginals9932

Oh, I had also done the test where you disconnect the harness and ground out the contact points to hear the shift solenoid click on and off and they both made a clicking noise, so I thought that meant it wasn't the solenoid.
I honestly don't know anything about transmissions and their parts, but am trying to get the job done.

My 2006 GT is slipping in 3rd, works with light throttle applied, some people told me its the intermediated servo piston which can be serviced on the side or partially dropped down, I am guessing I smoked the band, any suggestions

I'm getting a 'OD Off' light blink after the vehicle heats up to normal operating temp. Smooth shifting in all gears. No slipping or clunks. Any ideas??

Hi can you recommend where to order a kit for the Transmission Pump is it the same for the 5r55W and 5r55s? How much torque should it be on the pump hex screws? sorry if my term is not right. Can the control valve be cleaned too? Thank you.

What are your thoughts on this: 5r55s blew up overdrive planetary. Idles fine and goes to reverse ok but kind of harsh. Stalls in forward gear like torque converter locked up. That only happens in any forward gear setting. I did a full overhaul kit plus replaced bad overdrive hard parts. Still have the same problem. Is it a bad solenoid pack?
