- SUB 3 MARATHON - Abingdon Marathon 2019 Race Vlog & Recap In The Nike Zoom Fly - I am so delighted to be publishing this vlog, its been a long time coming but at the 2019 abingdon marathon we managed to run our first ever sub 3 hour marathon in the original nike zoom fly's!! The shoe decision was tough but ultimately the hoka one one rincon just didn't fill me with confidence going on Monday & Tuesday's run, yet my mini long run on saturday in the nike zoom fly's was perfect so I went with them. Overall, I never set out for this to happen, I can only say that at mike 18 I decided it was on and we went for it...scraping under the 3 hour mark by 20 seconds!! Official time was 2:59:40, coming 131st out of 768...an incredible 135 runners went sub 3 hours!! My overall take aways from this sub 3 hour abingdon marathon is that its a distance that I doubt I will ever master but one that keeps luring me back for more!!
Thank you all so much for your support as always!

Well done and well deserved!!! It was a long time coming.
Thank you Kim! So happy i've got it done this side of Christmas, takes the pressure off now!
What a hero. Congrats! Very much deserved
Thank you mate!
Amazing mate. Huge congratulations. It just shows if you go out there without the normal pressures of trying to get a time and you just go out to enjoy it, you can still pull off a performance like that. Some serious determination towards the end to get under the 3 hour mark but completely deserved. Doing all that as well as suffering from stomach issues is a great inspiration to all of us.
Thanks mate, running with no pressure is something we all tend not to do but I can highly recommend it! Can't wait to run a race without any stomach issues!
Congratulations Andy! Well deserved! Great Work 👍
Thank you mate!
Love your honesty & incredible performance. Massive congrats!!!!
Thank you so much Billy! Very important to be honest, no point in me saying it was a great race because it was touch and go at times!
Wow! Absolutely incredible mate! Well done!
Thanks so much mate!
Congratulations Andy!! What a great sub 3 hr marathon story!! So proud of you for conquering the 3 hour beast! 😀
Thank you so much Gill! I really appreciate your support as you’ve been here since the beginning, always encouraging me! Thank you 😀
Awesome run, congratulations and well deserved. I can’t imagine running like you do with the stomach issues, you have true grit! 💪👏🏅
Thanks Doug... I am going to get it investigated I think because I literally cannot take on any fluids or fuel without my stomach going into spasm... my diapragm is so knotted today, so painful
Incredible effort and result Andy. Very motivational for me, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks so much mate, really appreciate it!

Absolutely amazing running Andy , with the pre race problems you faced and to turn a run in like that you should be so proud of yourself, which I'm sure you are , 2 weeks of training as well amazing mate !!
Thanks Carl! So happy mate, just suddenly developed a bit of mental toughness from somewhere haha!

Enjoy your rest Andy you’ve definitely earned it. 👏💯
Thank you Claire! I will indeed, a whole week of rest, yeehaa!
Congratulations, it's a huge achievement! Keep us updated on your recovery please.
Thank you! Will do, I will be taking the week off for sure...I always have a week off after a marathon!
Congratulations on your sub3! I just got mine in Chicago last weekend after several attempts at it. Now, let's go faster!
Oh wow thats awesome well done! Definitely, lets do it!
Well done mate, awesome run :)
Thank you sir!
Don’t know how I missed this.
What an incredible effort. What an achievement. I’m thrilled for you.
I ran Abingdon last year. Always a good standard of runner. Great race but I found the laps mentally tough.
Congratulations once again. Enjoy your rest & recovery.
Ps. I notice in the excitement you said you finished in 1:59 instead of 2:59. Has Kipchoge got a rival. 😁😉
Haha thanks mate, I must been a bit delusional there 😂 yes any lapped courses are mentally I tough I find, I was just lucky that this is near where I used to live so it was great to revisit all my old haunts!
Glad you kept fighting and managed that under 3, great effort!
Thank you so much!
MASSIVE CONGRATS ANDY! YES, ALL CAPS BECAUSE I AM SO STOKED FOR YOU!!!!
You are a legend mate thank you so much, really appreciate it!
Helluva story, effort and result Andy! Great job and congrats on the Sub 3 💪🏾
Jordan Thomas thanks so much mate!
Congrats!! Way to battle. Best wishes on your recovery. Don’t start back too early.
Thank you Mark! I will be having the week off, dont worry! Rest is crucial after something like this!
Absolutely made up for you mate, well deserved!
Thank you so much!!
Welcome to the sub 3 club - you never forget your first! Thanks for sharing your epic battle and congrats. 👏👏👏 Hoping you figure out how best to fuel up - too many carbs hitting the stomach at once perhaps?
Thank you! It will certainly be remembered for a long time! I will be looking into it for sure
Well done - I'm running Abingdon this year. First marathon. Hope I can finish before the 5hour cut-off.
Best of luck! It’s a great race!
Congratulations!
Thank you!
Looks like that was tough on you, well done for pushing through.
Thanks mate much appreciated 👌
Well done mate👍🏻
Thanks so much!!
Boooom Nice One!!
Thank you mate!
Amazing what a relaxed mind can do for the body… The stress we put on our mind through each and every day pushes us to great places but sometimes just having a clear mind can be record breaking
Definitely, sometimes the pressure of expectation can put far too much stress on our body...a relaxed mind can achieve great things!
Amazing story. Would’ve been so easy to walk when things went south on you near the end. but as you know Andy #nohumanislimited
Congrats!!
Thank you! Exactly, I always had last sunday in the back of my mind, I knew towards the end it would be tight to get sub 3 but I didn't want to go down without a fight!
Such a great run Andy - hats off! Just wondering have you tried any of the hydro gels (maurten and I believe Mountain Fuel do them too). They’re supposed to bypass the stomach and be absorbed in the lower intestine...I think...??
Thank you!! Ooooh interesting I’ll have a look into that! For me, the second I take on any fluid or gel, within 30 seconds my stomach knots and cramps followed closely by a stitch so I think there’s something more fundamental going on.... ultimately though I’m keen to investigate anything that might help 👌
Andy this is freaking amazing ! Finally the well deserved sub 3 hours has happened ! You can now rest a bit and enjoy the success ! On my side I finally smashed the 1:20 mark in the half: ran 1:17:42 this Sunday ! A fast course but it was hot and windy !
Thanks mate! I certainly am resting up this week! WOW that’s an amazing time mate well done, you absolutely smashed that sub 80 barrier!!
What would be your next objective now ?
@@thecoffeerunner1281 I have no idea mate if i'm honest, just going to knuckle down over the winter, focus on my gut issues and also shorter distance work before next year...i'll do a video on it soon but still trying to process what happened on Sunday!
Sounds good! Enjoy the moment and your achievement ! Keep up with the great videos. I love the energy and attitude you put in what you do! Can’t wait to follow your next adventures :)
@@thecoffeerunner1281 Thank you so much mate, really appreciate your support as always, and amazing job again on that half time!
You ran 20 miles at 2:50-ish marathon pace, which is almost as incredible as gritting out a sub-3:00 when your body was done. Thanks for the inspiring story!
Thank you! Yes I crossed the half way mark in 1:25:30, which is so annoying as it felt just so easy, even at 18/19 miles i just felt like I was in cruise control. Just need to shift these gut issues and I think I will finally be able to put in a performance!
Wow, you are good!!!!
Thank you!
We
Very well done.
Thank you!
Congratulations.
Thank you!
Fair play Andy I've only just started running but your vids give me motivation to run my first 5k
Ah mate I really appreciate that, great job on your first 5k! Hopefully you’ve been well and truly bitten by the running bug!
@@TheFODRunner thanks definitely bitten. hopefully bump into you around the forest sometime soon.
Nick Thorne are you forest based? That’s awesome!
@@TheFODRunner yeah buckshaft Andy
Nick Thorne ah nice, I’m cinderford! I’m sure we will bump into each other on the cycle track at some point!
Great race recap Andy, big congrats on the sub 3 ✊ Have you tried Buscopan for your stomach issues? It might help?
Thanks Sandra! What does that do?
@@TheFODRunner It stops the stomach and bowels from cramping up, can be used for IBS. They use it in hospitals when they do procedures like colonoscopy, it relaxes the bowel. Used in hospitals but you can get it at the chemist. might be worth a try?
Sandra Rowland ah yes I know the stuff! My daughter was prescribed it ages ago for some IBS symptoms! I’ll investigate!
Congratulations for going under 3 hours 👍.
Thank you so much!
Also ran in Abingdon in 2019 for my first marathon, got round in 3.38 was in a dark place for the last 6 miles.
My second marathon was London this year, totally different experience in 3.07.
Going back to Abingdon this year and registered for Brighton in April. Determined to go sub 3 in one of them......
Hope Abingdon went well, I ran Abingdon this year, and running Brighton in April also
@dengmrunner went well thanks, got a new PB, how did you get on? Funny you're doing the same races, going to start training for Brighton in a week or two
@@alangray8952run my first Sub3 there, planning 2 run another PB at Brighton, ok all the best when u start the training 🙏
wow.. and some elevation as well on what looks like not the fastest course. amazing
It's weird, it was only 236.1ft but for some reason its come out as 2361...its wasnt! It was pan flat pretty much!
@@TheFODRunner phew! hahah.. suddenly thought you had moved to the swiss alps!.. but.. lots of turns still to add a few seconds
Paul Waye yeah I don’t know why it came out like that but it did! Thankfully it wasn’t hilly haha
My reactions--well done sir! seems to me the stomach problem is solvable, possibly chewing electrolite pills and small frequent ingestions of sugar (?). the hip problem more serious. take care on the hip would be my thought.
Yes I’ve had a few comments about possible gut health issues, I need to do some more research, but thank you! The hip flexor is very sore, at mile 21 my running started to become a shuffle and I felt my hip flexors kick in more than they should so it’s just overuse 👌
Great effort
What kind of breakfast do you have before your marathons?
Thank you!
I just had a bowl of gluten free porridge with a banana
