I think Arthas turning into the Lich king is one of the best "falling into darkness" story's I've seen, both storywise and execution.. I remember playing WC3 as a kid and didn't really understand what and why it happened and my friend said.. "It's like if Boromir took the Ring and returned home"
Dude, I got CHILLS. Thank you!
Arthas didn't turn he was controlled and manipulated.
More like anakin
yeah looking at the lich king reminds me of Darth Vader
Too be fair we hadn't seen Star Wars back then, but we had seen Fellowship about 12 times already so 🤷🏻♂️
This is what the Warcraft movie should have been, could have made a Lord of the Rings type trilogy about Arthas, and it could have been MASSIVE.
They still could.
IMO Their biggest mistake was in not giving the movie an animated appearance like yhe cinematics.
@@teabearchurchill5600 there was no mistake. The problem with that cinematic style is that it's straightup impossible to pay at a scale of a movie. The quality of the expansion cinematics would just go beyond any budget that even marvel would have had. So you have to use actors and costumes instead and support it with effects rather than using effects exclusively.
Warcraft movie started from the origins though it's not exactly the same. We're supposed to see Arthas Story on the Third installment but the first one didn't work so yeah. 2nd one was the fall of Illidan if I remember correctly
@@robinsonsupermarket3684 what, they cancelled fall of Illidan.. FML
@@NorthstriderGaming uhh what. Final Fantasy games have been doing it for years, look at Advent Children from 2005. Halo 2 anniversary's CGI cutscenes are almost an hour long in total. Hell, even Capcom has been making full length CGI Resident Evil movies for years. I'm sure it was within their budget to do all CGI if they wanted to. It probably would have been cheaper than hiring a shit ton of actors each with their own hand-made costume and doing make-up every filming session. If Square and Capcom can make full length CGI movies, so can Blizzard, but they just decided not to.

I like how when Arthas opens the huge gate effortlessly, his two troops hold the gate from closing back from the slam. One uses his hand and the other his pike, nice little detail from the animators, top tier cinematics as always.
Hadn't noticed that before. Nice catch!
It's not just soldiers, it's Falric and Marvin, the two captains who followed Arthas to Northrend and were the first to become death knights at his blade. One of them was a captain in the Alliance campaign in Warcraft 3.
@@Avlionable they're also one of the bosses in Halls of Reflection dungeon back in WotLK

At least the bad guys were kind enough to make clear the terms and conditions to wield frostmourne😂. Arthas knew what he was buying.
It may have been a requirement of the magic to work, like Arthas had to knowingly and willingly give in for it to work properly.

Ironically, Arthas' rise to power, his need to seek vengeance, turning to evil by becoming the Lich King, and his eventual downfall is truly the perfect story of a Jedi falling to the Darkside :D
“The harder you try to save this land the quicker you’ll deliver your people right into their hands”. They turned his determination into vengeance and then into a weapon. Jaina and Uther abandoning Arthas left him vulnerable to darkness and pure manipulation.
Amazing writing.
The hype that came with Arthas and Wow WOTLK launch is unmatched.
That is thanks to Warcraft 3. Blizzard should have keept WOW as a separate universe and continued Warcraft 4. Such a waste.
@@ghostpinguin Very true. WoW lore actually died with Burning Crusade when they character assassinated Kael and Illidan.
A big shame. No good story can ever come out of corpogreed that aims for averageness for sake of popularity.
And it was last good expansion, both in Wow and Hearthstone.
Isn't it ironic, both Arthas and Illidan sacrificed their selves to both dark powers just because they wanted to save their people only to do the opposite and damn them to forever darkness.
The road to hell is Paved with good intentions
That's not at all what happened in this story. He does it because he is a self-absorbed brat who thinks is invincible and because someone hurt him personally so he wants his revenge. He ignores every warning from everybody around him from people who are actually good and wise people unlike him but can't do anything because the brat is the king's son. He was not a good person long before he took the sword.
@@ungeimpfterrusslandtroll7155 True. He was a psychopathic narcist even though he was spouting "doing it for my people" bullshit, he wanted power not revenge.
Oh Sylvanas fan boys.
But there is a key difference no matter how much illidan lost he never lost his sight to his goal he always wanted to do the right thing but did it the worst possible way and arthas when he got the frostbourne he lost his sight of what's right and wrong and couldn't fight the darkness Inside him and consumed by the darkness he became the lich king, both are very parallel to each other at the same time very different too

You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain. That saying suits Arthas perfectly. Also watching these cinematics brings back a lot of memories of the old Warcraft 3 game I used to play. That and the Frozen Throne.

More like live long enough to have your support structures turn their backs on you. Arthas did nothing wrong at Stratholme.

it is fucking beautiful indeed but i would say the best story is war of the ancients, all 3 books
Novel **Arthas: Rise of the Lich King**
Willing to gamble your soul, to save your people, to be seen as a tyrant, in others eyes, to save those that can be saved, not many can do that.
Arthas was rash and had a hard time to listen to others, but legit, he did what was needed at the time, if he had not picked up Frostmourne, I imagine he would've been a great king, leading the Alliance for a long time.
But his fall is sad, and what makes him a great character how they did it. What happened to him in Shadowlands is unforgivable, but same time, him being used to make Kingsmourne makes sense, who else could be made into such a force.
What happened to him in the shadowlands could be completely acceptable, if not for the Sylvana's dialogue at the end of his flickering soul, which felt so out of place or ridiculous. Plus the fact that more story chould have been given to him during Shadowlands, other than "Look at this blue crystal I have here in my hands, which I'll use to forge Kingsmourne. The players will never 1+1 this one and find out this is related to Arthas!"... If the point was to give some sort of suspense, they failed by how obvious it was, and denied any kind of development related to the character by doing so.
I hope Arthas story would be adapted in the next Warcraft movie or TV series. Oh that would be so damn epic! 😌

I'm telling you, the story of Arthas has already been written into a fantastic book, now it just needs a movie. There's definitely enough content for at least one, and it would do so well. But sadly, Blizzard would probably never do it.
I still have hopium for some mini CGI TV series, following the success of Arcane, if W3 movie is off the table.. cmon blizzard give us something.
The book is amazing. Not only does it give an amazing backstory of Arthas and his horse invincible, but I thought it was incredible seeing the battle from Sylvanas point of view. Really adds more to her character as well
Well they already did one, wasn't centered entirely on one particular person (Aside from a very particular grey boy)
I dont have hope that if a movie was made today, it wouldn't be corrupt by this Hollywood and Washington. Its should just be left until someone who loves this story and world comes along.
Illidan onew himself all along and really tried to use his own ambition and talents to do what he considered good in the long run. Arthas wanted revenge and accepted he no longer cared about anything but power, getting worse with time. The battle was legendary
Came here as a suggested video after watching the WotLK cinematic after watching the new "The war within" cinematic.
Now I know why the song "Arthas my son" that played in the wotlk cinematic is so emotionally impactful. It's a requiem of a beloved son of Lordaeron... A sad tale of what was meant to be but didn't... The mourning of a paladin, child of a great King, with unparallel love for his people, destined to rule justly over them only to fall into darkness and cause thousands of casualties among the very people he swore to protect.
Such a powerful story.

Arthas becoming the Lich King was awesome and also sad as fuck.
Dude was literally used like a pawn by forces FAR beyond his understanding and comprehension.
From Frostmourne to Ner'Zhul to Sire Denathrius and the Jailer...a literal elder god/cosmic figure that created the runes that were used to bind Arthas.
