This is a longer comment, but here's the tldr:
Convenience costs will add about $15
Basic livestock cost adds about $30
Frozen and pellet food will practically last you forever for about $15
Upkeep costs add about $10/month
So I would add to this video's build $60 and $10/month and you would have a saltwater aquarium with fish/cleanup crew, fish food, upkeep, and added convenience calculated in.
That makes it $262+$10/month and you have a pretty good idea what your actual final cost will be. There is also a $5/month upkeep cost option, but the extra $5/month is worth it to keep your aquatic family swimming happily and healthily.
A simple analog timer for the light is a necessity in my books. No more than $5 and you never have to worry about leaving your fish/coral in the dark all day or accidentally leaving it on all night which can stress fish(lack of sleep) or promote unwanted algae growth.
A basic magnetic floating algae scrubber for the front glass is also fantastic for convenience and consistent viewing pleasure. Not necessary, but certainly worth the $5-$10.
Fish food is a cost as well, but honestly, it's basically nothing. Buy frozen mysis one time for $10 and maybe some high quality pellet food for $10 for variety and it lasts practically forever for the 1 or 2 fish you'll be keeping in 10 gallons.
A small aquarium siphon to clean the sand is a great addition than simply using a cup or tupperware to only empty water while doing water changes. You can agitate the sand while using a cup for water changes to clean some of it, but it isn't as efficient and is more of a hassle. This will be about $5.
I feel like it should also be mentioned that you have to upkeep the tank which means little water/salt costs every week. The 40 gallons of salt mix (you used 10 to start) will last 5 more months if you do a 2 gallon water change every week. Your remaining salt will last you 5 more months before necessary restocking if you change 2 gallons every week. This comes out to recurring $8/month for the first 5 months and recurring $10/month after.
You can also instead change 1 gallon per week to halve the upkeep cost, but on a small tank like a 10 gallon, I prefer 20% water changes weekly instead of 10%. If you accidentally overfeed or have a water chemistry issue, consistent 20% changes reduce the chance you'll run into an excess buildup of certain compounds like nitrate, while simultaneously regulating certain parameters like alkalinity, ph, calcium, trace elements, etc. But if you want to reduce upkeep costs to $5/month, then you could and your first batch of salt would last 10 months and then you would theoretically only need to restock once a year. Do note that salts aren't just salt. They are often a mix of salt and other elements, compounds, etc and they tend to separate into layers over time (similar to how oil will float separated on top water). You'll probably want to make sure everything in the salt mix is evenly combined.
Fish are typically $15-$35 but can also easily be $40+ if they are particularly stunning and hard to come by or considered "designer".
You'll probably want some type of snails or hermit crabs. I've had 3 combos that have worked well for me in a 10 gallon.
1 trochus snail, 2 blueleg hermits, 1 nassarius snail ; $7
2 trochus snails, 2 nassarius snails ; $8
1 trochus snail, 1 scarlet reef hermit, 1 nassarius snail ; $9
I know hermits get a bad rep for attacking snails for their shells but if you spend an extra buck or 2 for empty shells that are larger than what the crabs are currently using, that should minimize their aggression. Trochus can climb the glass and nassarius are super fast so they are typically safe from hermits in conjunction with extra shells.
Also, I've never had a mini blue tuxedo urchin, but I've heard wonderful things about them. So that could be an alternative to the typical snail and/or crab combo for a similar price. Do note that they are algae eating machines, so the bigger they get, the more algae they need. If they grow too big and eat more algae than is growing they will starve and die, which is very likely to happen in a small 10 gallon. You should probably swap them out for another tiny one when they get too big/ are eating too much.
Sorry this is so long, but I felt that this added cost of what actually puts life into the aquarium felt neglected.
So helpfull 🙏
Thank you so much for this detail! I am just starting out my research and this helps tremendously!
Okay but I don’t have half these things and my tanks been thriving for 3 years💪
@@zacharywesley6988 yeah😂
@@zacharywesley6988 but still
Wow, a lot of these items have really gone up in price since. The filter that was apparently $16 back when the video was made now runs for $40, and its a similar story with the heater, sand/rocks, and test kit. Inflation sure is great now, isn't it!
you didt get paid more with the inflation?????
@@irshicosmos3233 😂😂😂😂
I think its because there in the states there prices are alot lower then Canadian or other currencies. I get what you mean tho everything is expensive as hell

Bidenomics
I have been in the hobby for about 4 years and on nano tanks another awesome hob filter is a seachem tidal 55 that is I think like $60 and has a large media storage, service skimming, and adjustable flow.
I had the exact same set up(except for the filter, I had an aqua clear 70) for like a year until I bought a Red Sea reefer. And as a college student it was a great way to introduce myself into the hobby. A piece of advice tho, try to keep your salinity stable and your parameters low. Also the light is great I had it on max growing montis, torches and LPS.
Good video, because I see a lot of reefers who think getting a Kessil or an AI light and load up on marine pure or biohome media are budget items. I even ran across a guy who said that a Kessil A80 is not good enough and you need an A360. Thanks for showing alternative, not all of us (99%) are going to go up to sps level so having an alternative budget options is highly appreciated. I haven't been in the hobby for 18-20 years and I am amazed at the alternative options and technology that makes reefing much easier and more affordable. One thing I do recommend is using offer up or craiglist and find a used tank(most of them are just 1 year or less used) that has a lot of the smaller equipment such as the salinity reader or clean up hose and siphon, etc. I found a great deal for all those things for 120 bucks for a 10 gallon AIO. Just need salt(reef crystals-10 bucks for 50 gallon on amazon) and get RO water for 25cents a gallon. I used a TDS meter on those and it was less than 1 ppm 99% of the time. TDS meter (10 bucks, already had for something else).
Thanks again Garry...when I see some of these lights that people buy, I just kind of shake my head. People told me the stock lights on the Biocube would never grow anything. False. They grew corals just fine. Did they grow at the 100% optimal rate? Maybe not...don't care.
Outdated prices but I'm excited to get my first saltwater going
Did you eventually add coral to this tank? Can you make another video on how/when you add fish, maintain, etc. I found this extremely helpful, thank you!
Thank you for asking the important questions prior to setting it up.
Nice, scrolling ran across this. I just did exactly the same build almost. My filter is a Coralife filter similar but with built in protein skimmer. ($65 ) when I got it a few years back. I needed a quarantine tank and it's $1 days. I was going to get a prime but ran across that light. Really good light. Great to see a video out there showing people wanting to start. I also built a screen top. Using window screen framing and garden netting (small squares) for the spooked jumpers.
Great info it was me a few years ago debating on if I could maintain a saltwater aquarium.5 years later I still have the same fish even though I’ve switched tanks it’s turned out great!if your thinking about it and can do the whole maintenance and everything go for it just do your research especially on how to cycle your tank!!
Hmm... i see a challenge to build one cheaper lol
It’s easy. Just don’t get ripped off buying RO water for $1 a gallon and then buying salt. You can get saltwater at LFS for $.79 to $0.89 per gallon. You can easily save $20 off the bat
@@Miguelspl150 I always make my own RO water. I can't trust a lfs around me to have 0 tds ro water
Your videos help so much, I had a reef tank as a kid. Now as an adult I have a cichlid tank and want to build a reef one. Want to start with a small 10g right under my cichlid tank, this has helped so much
Let’s see an update on how the tank is doing wondering how the light does
Great info.
I started actually on a 55g long FOWLR. I've had it for months and love it, but have been wanting to do a small coral tank. Luckily, I had a 10 gallon laying around, some extra powerheads, sand, rock but not enough, filters, heater and light. I need a better light and a few other things but lucky I was about ready to go. Gonna give it a try.
Thanks for the video.
I'm giving away a saltwater starter pack on my channel, maybe you'll get lucky if you enter!
This was a good video for starters, especially since you not only included the names of the products you actually used but also included the price points, a lot of other videos didnt, thanks!
That's what I was going for, thank you!
Great video, how ever with inflation this is probably about a 300.00 dollar tank these days. I am a huge fan of these types of tanks as I tend to have species specific Biotopes wwith tanks this small...ie all SPS, Chalice, Acan or Zoanthid collections. The only things I would have changed is a Kessil A80 Tuna Blue for a light, Hyger mini powerhead, a Seachem 35 or Aquaclear equivelent filter. With tanks this small I typically do about a 1/2 gallon water change about every 3-4 days which makes keeping water quality up to par a breeze. I always have a 5 gallon container of fresh mixed sea water and the process takes all of about 3 minutes! Instead of a ATO system I bought a Reptile Dripper made by Zoo Med to drip RO/DI water into the tank to compensate for evaporation. Some of my most jaw dropping tanks have been 10 gallon tanks set up very closely to what this video showed. However I have been reefing for about 26 years now so I have perfected a lot of things in this hobby, unlike a beginner! I wished there were more videos like this out there, preferably of some that have been set up and running for a while.
Now this tank would cost about $400.
I ordered all my stuff a few days ago !! I’ve never in my life thought I would have a saltwater tank but I’m excited and Nervous lol , I know what livestock I want when the time comes
Be patient, friend, or you may kill the whole group like I did once. Introduce 1 fish at a time weeks or months apart (unless pair is needed as in clown fish)
How many invertebrates should I add ? I’m thinking 6-7 snails a fire shrimp and a goby to start
Sounds good. How many gallons? I would throw a number of the small hermit crabs in there as well since they help clean up. You can probably have 1 crab per gallon.
It’s 13.5 gallons
@@TheCoachHill ya get you 10 small hermit crabs and 2-3 snails. I ran a 29g with 0 snails. They aren't as pretty, but 2-3 will cover that thing well
Thank you for spending the time to explain how sometimes prices change
I’m 3 weeks into my 10 gallon Nano reef🔥👌
Update?

Good video! Are you going to do a series on this build as your tank progresses?
Ok you've convinced me I'm going for it. I already spend about 3 hours on the 55 gallon and 10 gallons freshwater tanks that i already have. I think spending another 2 hours on a fish tank works for me. I also have 2 extra 10 gallon tanks, 2 extra fikters. that i have been trying to find a use for.
I'm wondering if the metal and or glass lids are needed also ? I'm told fish like to jump out!
Great video, thanks! Subscribed Sir. Just doing this now and this was very helpful.

I took a look, very nice! You'll have to post updates as you add to the tank!
The Fish Tank Guy yes! Thanks for replying
You must include the BIGGEST BUDGET TIP which is the BUYING USED OPTION TO FURTHER LOWER THE COST other than that great video champ
Absolutely true...I swear that buying and selling an aquarium is like buying and selling a car...as soon as that sucker leaves the store, you are looking at selling for like, 50% off. Thanks for checking out the video!
The Fish Tank Guy absolutely
True in theory but I always find used aquarium related products at same or sometimes even more expensive on OfferUp or Facebook. It’s ridiculous.
Yes and yes because I have 6 tanks right now that’s are fresh water
If you've been thinking about getting into saltwater...go for it! Be prepared to ditch a few of your freshwater tanks though, you'll get hooked on everything salt has to offer :)

I like this idea!
@@TheFishTankGuy please do asap
Great video !! Super excited to see more on tank
a five gallon sump is better for a salt water then a hang on filter keeps water crystal clear and less water changes coralife white/blue
Hang on back is fine for a starter tank. No need to get premium setup for first 10g.
@@user-hl9xq1ou5l do this test two 10g tanks one with hang on back filter and one with a 5g tank sump and look at water quality
@@apr194828 oh no doubt sump is best, but for 10g you can get a hang on for under $20 where sump will be much more expensive. For first time buyers hang on will be fine because the price tag is already scary to begin with. 10g is only the beginning. Once you get a taste you will want a 300g with full sump etc.
@@apr194828 try testing price of HOB filter vs price of sump + stand + plumbing. For a beginner or someone on a budget a HOB is great
I have 5 gallons starting kit for trying and learn
I would recommend starting with a 10 or 20g tank for saltwater. 5g is hard to maintain as it's easy for levels and things to change quickly. I don't want a small tank to discourage you from getting into the hobby!
i have a stock light because i dont waqnt to ad corals i want to add only a fish
is this bad for my clown fish
Do what you will, everyone's water is different but I've been using Tap water for my saltwater tank for year's. Recently got back into the Hobby little bit of prime. No ill effects outside of my Nitrates running consistently high at 20ppm BUT here again this tank is a FOWLR. All my livestock are happy and health. Tank has been up for little over 6 months.
That being said if I were to run a "Reef" tank yeah I would consider another water source since corals are picky about water parameters. FOWLR Nah use what you got.
That's good advice...I also think that maintenance schedule makes a big difference. Letting the waste/nutrients build up in the tank with tap water could cause algae blooms more easily...but if it's been working for you, that's awesome!
Unintentional asmr
I'm just not a big fan of the manufactured live rock and white base rocks. They're either too uniformly purple and/or too uniformly porous. I do miss the authentic live rocks with their inconsistencies in color and shapes. I should've stocked up on live rocks and lace rocks when I had a chance.
Great idea, but for the same sort of cash why not by the fluval 52ltr nano that looks better and has everything you need to start a new saltwater aquarium
I actually don't disagree with you, however for someone who may be tight on money, the difference could mean trying a tank vs. not. I'm going to be doing a video soon on the cost of the 52ltr EVO. Quick math though, tank is $160, tack on everything else in this video breakdown, you're looking at $285. Still not bad! Just went with the cheapest starter option, but I appreciate that feedback! Good idea!
@@TheFishTankGuy Where can you find the Fluval Evo 52l for $160? I've been looking for ages and the best price you can find here in Australia is $350 Australian Dollars or around $215 USD.
@@GusMcCaffrey Is the 52l the same as the 13.5g?
Forgot water containers food the fish
You are right, but I did mention this would be the cost just for the tank itself, because fish and food for them can vary widely!
Not a Magic fan but that hat is 🔥
Hey quick question... I have a canister filter from my freshwater planted tank. If I cleaned it up and put media for saltwater in it, could I use a canister filter? Or should I stick with a hang on back filter? Thanks the vid was really helpful
Yes i think you could. The canister filter would be even better than the HOB as it probably has more volume.
I've heard a lot of great things about canister filters...any update on your progress? Did you try it?
I liked your video I'm Brazilian I have a reef too
He wasn’t wrong, I dove into the hobby expecting to spend about 600-700$ total well by the time I got a brand new biocube 32, stand, all my filter media, test kits, rock and sand, rodi machine, salt water mixing station, heater, wave maker, yeah Ull spend more then u anticipate if u don’t do ur research on what all u need. I’m at about 1200$ not I including my fish and coral
It's not a cheap hobby...and the frustrating thing for me as a big fan of fish keeping, is all the "experienced" folks telling new people to buy $400 and $500 lights! You don't need to have the optimal, best setup when you are first starting. You can always expand and upgrade, but you'll lose a lot of money if you go all in and find out you hate doing it.
My waterbox 20 has come out to a total of 2000$ right now.
If you reading this in 2022 there is a Nuvo 15g all in one for 99
Where?
I use tap water and conditioner. All my levels are fine my fish are healthy. been doing this for about a year.
Hi do you need a skimmer for a fish only tank?
It really depends. The short answer is no. If you have a small tank like a 20g or less, I would say no need. Water changes should take care of things. However, fish create the most waste in a reef tank, so if you have a larger tank or more fish than recommended, a skimmer would be helpful.
I couldn't find that pennplax filter that cheap. They were more like 50 dollars where I found them
Thanks for letting me know... Products come and go so quickly. I'll find a replacement and update my link, I'll let you know when I do!
@@TheFishTankGuy I really appreciate the video though. I feel like I'm not very knowledgeable on this hobby yet but I'm hoping to soon get the basics for a 10 gallon idea. Still plan to research way more before i do this though
@@chrisstroud60 Is low budget a requirement for you to be able to get into the hobby? If you have the funds, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Fluval EVO 13.5. It's the perfect starter tank.
@@TheFishTankGuy that could be affordable to me so I'll check that out and thanks for the recommendation.
Just got the evo today. Lucky my pet co had one left. It wasn't cheap lol but it's probably everything I need as far as the tank and more important the lighting. Thanks again for the recommendation
Huh. Now I have a use for my 10 gallon tanks that are empty and I have a bunch of clean used filters from previous builds that have been sterilized. All I need to do is set mine up and cycle the tank and wait til I can get some clownfish.
Edit: I currently have one damsel fish in my fish only tank. I'm using my saltwater tank as a fish only as corals are pretty daunting to me.
I used a grow light I had laying around the house ment for growing plants it's got 2 spectrums and my coral love it. Wish I can upload videos on it it's a really awesome side hobby. Rule number one do water changes weekly. Got my setup for around 150$ total mainly because I had most of the stuff on hand. Coral, water, etc. Thats a different story prolly another 100$
That sounds like a really awesome find Marty on the grow light. Any idea what brand or light it is?
It's a Wakyme 200 watt grow light I got i found them on Amazon for for 50-100$ so there pretty affordable and are decent quality 👌
If you are growing plants I highly recommend running a freshwater tank too. Your plants will thrive on the fish tank water from when you do water changes.
Is this a good build for clown fish?
It is! Although some people may tell you that a 10g saltwater tank is not big enough for livestock, I tend to disagree. You can definitely have a pair of Ocellaris Clownfish in this tank and they will be healthy and happy with regular maintenance.
A lot of people suggest a skimmer for saltwater tanks. What would be the benefit of getting one.
Skimmers help to remove the organic waste that builds up in your aquarium. It's another way to help keep your water clean and keep your levels in check. Honestly, in a smaller tank it's not necessary...you can keep those levels in check with regular water changes, however, if you have the extra budget room, they will help you even further to keep a clean(er) aquarium.
Another way to save money, if you place the filter on the side of the tank u won’t need a circulator. Just buy a bigger filter
We have a 29 gallon that’s a LOT of work. It’s big enough to be very pretty, but small enough to need a TON of maintenance. 😩 We have an extra 10 gallon, thinking about adding it as a second tank but if smaller equals more maintenance I’d almost rather go the freshwater route to save me the high maintenance demands of the smaller tank.
ugh i was so excited to start a saltwater, but...man the price of admission and ongoing costs/time needed to upkeep a small saltwater tank is too much. oh well.
I use tap water In my reef and have not yet had an issue
Consider yourself one of the lucky ones!
Is it really all that bad I’m a little concerned hearing that I filter it through a drinking water filter and give it a night to mix fully
Temperature you forgot
Is this light actually sufficient for corals? Why not spend the extra couple bucks for the aquaknight that is known for being a bang for the buck
Thanks for the useful video. How much is the approximate monthly expense after setting up this tank?
Pet co has the dollar a gallon sale in Texas right now
iam getting a moray ribbon eel in a week or two and i need some help on it for a 10 gallon
That's really awesome, unfortunately I think a 10g is too small for that eel...
Good video, but I would have went with an Aquaclear filter, Koralia nano 425 power head and a Kessile A80 Tuna Blue. This would have increased the cost by about 120 bucks but would have probably been better quality and the filter would have definitely been a lot more cheaper in the long run to operate and gives you a lot of flexibility in filter media. In fact I am running these same components on a 10 gallon nano full of coral as we speak!
Is this enough for my marine hermit crab setup?
What about stocking, what kind of fish can you put in there?
A 10g saltwater tank limits you a bit, but you could always do a pair of Ocellaris Clownfish...or maybe a Clown and another small fish. A Yellow Watchman Goby and another small fish would be nice. I would say 2 smaller fish is about the max you'd want to do.
Great video
I used tap water and it was fine. Was I not suppose to?
Is the sand you used live sand or dry sand?
What should be put in the HOB?
On a small tank you can get by with some filter floss, but adding purigen with it would be better!
What if you deside just a fish sand and dry rock ..i can use any kinds of lights?
Is there much difference between, say 10Gallon tank, 13 gallon, 15/16 gallon or even 20 gallon. I’m looking to get 2 clownfish, that’s pretty much it, I’m a complete newbie so am not looking to get corals etc. Many thanks!
I have a 10 gallon horizontal jebo. Every is natural from the ocean even the live rock I harvested everything. Any idea what I can stock it with?
What kind of fish should I start out with in a 10 gallon?
I would go with the popular choice...pair of Ocellaris Clownfish.
Started a 10 gallon salt with clown trigger n clown fish just 2.. circulation pump and salt filter live rock live sand heater came with tank and added 3 plants .. that’s it do I need more ?
The light is not a good coral light? Is this light coral specific or just a general light?
It's built to support low to medium light coral. Softies and LPS coral will do just fine under this light. SPS not so much, unless they are high up in your tank...you'll need to experiment a bit.

Yes you can, but keep in mind that when water evaporates, you'll need to replace it with straight RO/RODI water. You can buy that at any grocery store, but you shouldn't top off the tank with tap water.
im thinking of using this as a guide to set up a 80 litre (17.5 gallon)reef tank. one thing im never sure about is if some power heads are to powerfull for smaller builds. any tips on this is much appreiated.
I'll tell you what...it really does vary, and I'll tell you why...I think it's very difficult for manufactures to accurately state how much water a powerhead will move. Many people believe the numbers are overstated, others understated. You have to learn as you go...if I were to make a recommendation, try the SunSun powerheads I mention in this video. They seem to move a good amount of water, and are very inexpensive. If you decide not to go with them, you can always use one to circulate saltwater etc. Let me know how it works out! I have 2 on my 20 gallon tanks, but if you have a powerful filter, you probably would just need one for a 17.5 gallon tank. Do you have any videos or pictures of your new setup?

Random question: Can I get away with water changes twice a month for a 20 gallon without a protein skimmer? All easy fish and corals. I'm a freshwater guy just trying to figure out the ways of the reef. As of right now, I've only had mechanical and biological filtration in mind.
Twice a month should be just fine. Hardcore folks will recommend once a week...which is ideal, but basically as often as you can do water changes will be best. My water changes have gotten spaced out due to how busy I am with things at home and work...and it shows in my tank. Your tank will survive with fewer water changes, but it will THRIVE with more.
@@TheFishTankGuy Okay. With a protein skimmer and water changes every other week, would it thrive?
@@duncandonuts5268 there are a lot of things that factor into that, like how many fish you have, how much you feed the tank etc
@@TheFishTankGuy Obviously I would feed very little. It's all the same for freshwater. I can get away with fewer water changes in my freshwater tank since I've got a lot plants in it with smaller fish. I was looking into a pair of clownfish for sure, and maybe 2 other small fish?
My freshwater tank has all easy plants tho. The hard plants need CO2 expensive lights and water perameters that no one want's to keep right. Espcially since freshwater can't just have RODI right off the bat.
Question, do u think the powerhead is too strong? Im trying to put that same powerhead in my 29gal
I built one for 50 dollars minus the fish and used tap water and everything is good 😂
What all did u get do u have links from where u got it from?
If I am setting up my tank, could I use well water?
