Volvo Penta MD2020 - fuel and pre fuel filter replacement

  • First I drain the water separator on the pre-filter and then I replace the filter unit. After a successful refilling of the filter unit I change the fine dieselfilter and vent out the system.
    To make the venting out go faster you can put on a finger to the vent hole at the fine filter while pumping, due to the pump sucks the diesel from the pre-filter and it will then create a wacuum and suck up the diesel much faster.
    When the diesel almost reach the top at the vent hole you can pump out the rest of the air and then close the hole with the screw.

    Tino, I saw your emergency fuel cut-off valve in the video. (I had the same on my Bavaria.) That valve is notorious for getting blocked by contaminants, because it is actually a valve for a gas, not a liquid. The orifice is very, very small. It blocked on my boat during a storm, and I had an engine failure (Episode 12 on my CZcams site). I explain the cause of the engine failure in Episode 13. You might want to watch that video. When I returned to France from the Azores, I replaced that emergency shut-off valve with a normal, diesel/liquid valve that has a much bigger orifice. You might want to consider doing the same. (If you Google the Bavaria shut-off valve, you will see many people have had the problem.) Very nicely explained video. Congrats.

    This is a very good and helpful video. I've just completed the job and wished that I'd seen before I did it. Especially like the tip about the venting in your description. It felt as though I was venting for ever! There is also mention of having a blockage in the fuel stop valve and I had exactly that problem on my Bavaria. Its apparently a common choke point so I've been researching options. I've seen an inline strainer, fitted upstream of the cock. This is intended to stop the "gunk" getting to the stop cock and looks a good solution. Anyway, thanks for posting this video it'll be helpful to lots of folks.

    Fin video. God forklaring og beskrivelse. Tænker du kan undlade at montere pladen ved masten før det bliver forår, så kan du nemmere holde øje med eventuelle utætheder. Keep going!

      Tak. Jeg skal have fat på en prop så jeg kan lukke hullet af ved dæksgennemføringen, lige pt. er det bare tapet. Denne prop findes i et nyt gennemføringskit men vil se om jeg kan få proppen løs så jeg ikke skal købe hele sættet.

    Hi, thanks for your interestings films. I have aVP MD2010D from 2001 and I dont see how to change the thermostat. I think maybe util for everibody.

    • @twiper
      @twiper  Před 5 lety

      Hello Riccardo. The thermostat is located the same place at the MD2010 and the MD2020, but there should not be any reason to replace it if it is in functional condition. Only if the engine is cooking and is running to hot the thermostat can be the problem. The thermostat is located between the heat exchanger alu box and the engine block, so if you must replace it you must remove a lot of parts.

    Tino, referring to the Volvo manual, there is an additional step when venting the fuel system :
    "3. Slacken off the injector delivery line nuts (4) and
    set the engine speed control to wide open throttle
    (WOT). Turn the engine over at WOT with the
    starter motor until fuel comes out of the delivery
    lines"
    I am reluctant to follow these instructions, because I can't imagine how to turn the engine with the starter motor when injector delivery line nuts are open.
    How did you do this?
    Greetings

    • @twiper
      @twiper  Před 5 lety

      The step you are refering to is only something you do if the fuel system is completely empty or if the engine refuses to start.

    • @abynormal9317
      @abynormal9317 Před 5 lety

      After filters change on Volvo Penta D1-30,D2-40,D2-55,D2-75 it s enough just to pump fuel on pre filter until pump button becomes hard to push /3-5 min/.After that just start a engine.It s automaticali vent though diesel returning pipeline.You have to do step 3 only if there is no diesel between high pressure pump and injectors.

  • @ljt2000
    @ljt2000 Před 2 lety

    Hi Tino,
    Why are you filling the pre-filter with diesel? Not enough pumping from engine to fill pre-filter and filter? Thank you

    • @twiper
      @twiper  Před 2 lety +1

      You can leave the pre-filter empty, but the problem is it will take about 1-2 hours to pump the diesel up to the engine due to the weak handpump. Also why I'm filling the fine filter at the engine, simply to make it more easy to remove all the air from the system.

    Tino: did you fix the hour counter that did not work ?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  Před 6 lety +1

      No the hour counter has a production error, a known problem at Volvo Penta so almost every one has this problem. I have seen it work once, in my video "sailing with a CZcams fan"

    • @hheinsius
      @hheinsius Před 6 lety

    If you mount a vacuum gauge with a tee after the prefilter it will show 0 when filter changed it will slowly go up as filter plugs and change out filter when it gets between 7 and 10 inches hg. www.cruisingworld.com/how/fuel-filter-gauge/ thats what I did on my boat. I have now gone 3 years and its at 3

    • @twiper
      @twiper  Před 4 lety

      Yes it is a smart trick, something I also have seen mounted directly on the pre-filter unit. Think it was a racor filter system.
