  • In this episode, we solo sail to Catalina Harbor on the backside of Catalina Island. Winds are light and we attempt to make it across the San Pedro channel past the West side of Catalina on a single tack. We anchor mid-Cat Harbor in about 85 feet for a chill overnighter, then sail back to San Pedro.

Always learn something from watching, Mark. As an aside, love that old raster scan RADAR. Imagining that it’s showing you situational awareness for vessels passing by that area 20 years ago. Let’s do the Time Warp again!

That old green screen raster radar actually works really well. Unfortunately, you cannot see it without leaving the helm. That's fine for an ocean crossing but it's no bueno for crossing busy shipping lanes or negotiating channel buoys.

Well done bro, I like the info!
That dude who couldn’t find his GPS coordinates was killing me! Wow!

Thanks. I didn't record it but there were at least 2 others struggling to get their GPS coordinates on separate distress calls over the weekend. There's really no excuse for it in this day and age.

@@keeldragger 100%, you shouldn’t be out there if you “don’t know where you are”!

I was there over the weekend, tried to hail you over the radio to say hi. I was the guy asking in the catalina channel if somone had AIS and then hailed the container ship. had to edit my comment to ad that in after I saw it. Lol what a surprise.

Sorry - didn't catch you trying to hail me. I'm surprised at how infrequently folks try to hail ships when crossing the shipping lanes. Good on you for doing that. I know there was at least one Southbound ship who was outside the shipping lanes. I try not to use AIS as a crutch for good seamanship and practice taking hand bearings, etc... but it is damn nice to have.
