    Saiki of these days have the strong charisma with stronger vocals and confidence.
    Then there's Miku exhibiting solid skills as the rhythm guitarist of "Band-Maid" here, which composition is almost always rhythmically tricky, and she also has great voice in her own way.
    People sometimes speak of Band-Maid members and say that none of them are technically the best singer/players, but gifted and creative like no other. I'm yet to find a band who is as unique and intriguing as this band. As Japanese, I don't find other Japanese bands that refreshing - I'm getting old and have already listened to similar music. There's no doubt that there are so many great bands which I do listen to occasionally, and some bands are quite inventive. But with Band-Maid, it was love on first listen. They sounded deliciously unique/weird to me just what I want in music.

    Here's my favorite quote found on one of the reaction channels.
    Kanami: Brain of Band-Maid
    Saiki: Voice of Band-Maid
    Akane: Mustle of Band-Maid
    Misa: Spine of Band-Maid
    Miku: Heart of Band-Maid
    They are now kind of one cohesive organism.

    I can't ever see Band Maid going the "Sell Out" route . If ANYONE can make Japanese language rock songs mainstream,it will be them . One thing i CAN foresee is US pop artists " stealing " from their incredibly prolific riff catalogue. Maybe n' er do wells will think " Oh, nobody will notice if i use this melody, or this riff. After all nobody listens to them here anyway . What are they gonna do ? ". Well n'er do wells... Don't think for one moment that Maidiacs won't swarm on you if you underestimate their Band ! Mincho writes enough riffs to power a small town for a few months . Write your own monotonous sh*" and leave the job of being relevant to the pros . Peace & prosperity, L 33 !

    Comfortable. I'm not sure that's the exact word, but it may be as close as we get.
    I get Band-Maid's sporadic newsletters and this morning Misa posted one. The letter was mostly about how excited she is to be performing at Yokohama Arena, but she also made a comment about how close and supportive the members are toward each other.
    This is the Outlook translation:
    MISA: "The members really helped me a lot. When I'm depressed, when I'm happy, or when I'm having negative emotions, I get a lot of people to listen to me and give me advice. Nowadays, the members have nothing to hide, and if something new happens, they immediately talk about it. Great friendship. The BAND-MAID team is all good friends and I love them."
    They're more than comfortable, they're family, they're BFF, and they know that Band-Maid is a miracle. The teamwork this band demonstrates is something beyond special.

    @Kevin6059 Před 9 měsíci +3

    You were asking why they hit you so hard, and what makes the sum of these phenomenal parts so incredible. Well, I think you know, but I'd say several factors, not the least of which is their songwriting and arranging. First, the structure of their songs is often different than the standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge, etc. Secondly, they surprise you so constantly throughout a song that it can almost be disorienting until several listens. They'll switch genres ridiculously and on a dime and it somehow works. They insert an additional beat just...because. Their compositions are extremely dense so you can listen 1,000 times and not only not get tired of it but you keep hearing new stuff. They know how to use melody in mutliple ways with multiple instruments, including even the bass carrying the melody. Another factor is something you touched on hear, and that's Saiki's incredible voice. Her wheelhouse is in a much lower range than many other female vocalists and it's powerful. She's also got that unteachable musicality factor. With me, I am NOT a lyrics guy. I still don't know all of the lyrics to some songs I've been listening to for 50 years. BUT - when I finally did getting around to paying attention to their lyrics, there are a lot of songs where the lyrics are genius level! That pigeon, I tell ya. What an inspiration she is. Then, there's that rhythm section. There is nothing formulaic or predictable about MISA or Akane's playing. In fact, if you hone in on the drums in a lot of songs, there is literally NO patterns! It's like every measure is it's own thing. I don't even know how she remembers her part! So - long ramble here so sorry about that. I'll stop now.

    Oh yeah. Early Band Maid will be a wild adventure for you.
    It is where you’ll find them bending and breaking stuff, experimenting. They are always Band Maid, but you’ll hear them flexing creative muscles in a hundred different ways. I think Saiki’s development has been the most obvious and dramatic. Not to be outdone, our small pigeon has been through quite the metamorphosis, too!
    My second listen to Band Maid after “Thrill” was “Choose Me.” It was 2017 and only their third single. Released as the B side to “Daydreaming.”
    Both songs are now Okyu-ji standards in concrete. And they are both incredibly different from one another. Maybe do the two-fer?
    Whatever you do, we’ll be happy to follow along.

  • @grahamreed8774
    @grahamreed8774 Před 9 měsíci +4

    Great reaction again. Although other band members contribute to Kanami's original song structure, the only way that a composer can produce music like this is that they have the whole concept of the song structure in their head. She can hear everything that each instrument is contributing to the song and the melody for the vocal line. Just to say-I'm really enjoying your reactions to UK prog from the early 70s. I lived through all that and saw so many bands 1970-74.

    Saiki's voice was one of the things that drew me to the band at first. She has a deeper voice that's full of character that's not normal in a lot of Japanese singers.

    Yes, Shambles is the Akane show with special guest stars Kanami, MISA, Saiki and Miku. But wait! Was it really the Kanami show, because she wrote the song and played it with such forcefulness and exquisite abandon. Or was it the MISA show because without MISA, the rapturous drive of the song would be a ride on four flat tires. Or was it the Saiki show because she focused the sonic chaos into a song with melodies that could express Miku's lyrics like no other singer could. Without Saiki, Shambles might sound like a familiar instrumental. Or was it the Miku show because, damn, she wrote the lyrics, played the important rhythm parts, and added her unique brand of backup vocals that have become a defining "sixth instrument" of Band-Maid.
    So exactly whose show was it? It was the Maid's show, as usual! 🤘🎀🤘Thx, L33!

    Question of the moment: should they “go mainstream” to get airplay and pull in a larger audience? Or is that selling out (and some might say they tried it with “The Dragon Cries”) and should they just stick to producing excellence such as Shambles?

    Regarding that last point, I really hope Pony Canyon pushes stuff like Manners and Thrill and Chemical Reaction and Daydreaming more. Or they should hire a company to do so for the western market. Seems like they have been pushing hard for Anime leads and shows (which hey, not complaining) but that's the extent of the marketing. But the band already have songs that are super accessible, they just need even 1/100th the marketing push that a Taylor Swift song gets.
